TreadTracker Treadmill Sensor // Treadmill Accuracy Testing Fun!

    The TreadTracker is effectively a Bluetooth Smart running footpod for your treadmill...that doesn't require a foot. You place it below your treadmill and then it broadcasts out speed via Bluetooth Smart so that apps like Zwift can use it as a pace source. Additionally, watches like those from Garmin, Polar, and Suunto.
    In this review I dive into accuracy testing of not just the tread tracker, but also my entire treadmill as well as Stryd.

    Ray, the big appeal for me would be the multiple shoe aspect. Since I sweat a lot and it is quite humid here, I would have to rotate among two/three pairs of shoes to start the run with dry ones. Likewise, a friend of mine has his sprint, long run, and recovery shoes. This would be ideal for him as well.

    Great review. I have been very concerned about the accuracy of my new treadmill that I dropped $1400USD on. I did the measurement of the belt trick (without a load) and saw my treadmill was going much faster than the speed selected. I know it is more accurate with a load but my Garmin footpod has consistently shown different speeds. I don't like the idea of calibrating a foot pod to a treadmill if the treadmill is inaccurate. That is why I like that Garmin footpods calibrate using GPS during an outside run which makes more sense to me and why I tend to trust it.

    This is a brilliant review. I can't find the TreadTracker, but there is an optical device available called the Runn, which works well. The belt on my new Sole F-85 goes 18.5% faster than it reports. Ouch. (I confirmed this with a wheel like Ray did.) Now I know, and now as I wait for Sole to get back to me, I can run with the Runn on Zwift and get credit for my actual speed.

    To test my treadmill (Proform) I tossed my bike on it which has a garmin speed/cadence sensor. I then ran it to measure speed and distance between the two. Cheap and easy. Verified that my belt is .3 mph fasterthan the display at all speeds. So if I put in 3.0mph, real world 3.3. 6.0 mph, real world 6.3. Or if I want to run real world at 7.0 I dial in 6.7mph. And if I run 6 miles, I've actually covered 6.3 miles real world.

    I have the treadtracker but find when using it on Zwift the pace on the screen jumps around a good bit. Can be a bit distracting seeing your pace go from say 12kph to 12.5 then down to 11.3 or something in the space of a few seconds. I use a Garmin footpod mainly and the pace is rock solid.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed, I suspect that's potentially due to the treadmill itself having jumps in the belt. It doesn't appear as though TreadTracker is doing any smoothing of the data to 3rd party apps.

    What about TreadTracker and the treadmill vs like the accelerometer in the Fenix 5X or the Apple Watch 4? I have always wondered how accurate these wrist devices are vs actual miles.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find typically they handle well for paces in your long run range. But usually I see things fall apart at the outer edges. Other challenges are button pushing and water bottles hoses it up too.

    • @adammarin5566
      @adammarin5566 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dcrainmaker I have felt that the watches "should" be fairly accurate based on it having your stride information and such from outdoors GPS runs. I have always based my runs on the pace and distance my watch says over what my treadmill says I am doing. is that a pretty safe assumption?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a blend to be honest. I usually trust my watches pace indoors except in sprints/very hard intervals and walking breaks/recovery. For walking I’d likely trust treadmill, and for sprints it’s a toss up which one will suck less.

    • @adammarin5566
      @adammarin5566 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TimGrose

      They are handy if you have nothing else to hand but even Garmin themselves suggest to use a foot pod if want better results. And AFAIK it is actually modelling arm swing rates compared to what you do outdoors which is a problem if you reach for a towel or drink or something. And then I wondered the other day why I had supposed broken one of my records on a Garmin until realised must have got some flattering results when had unknowingly had his enabled.

    Great review - always wanted to know how accurate (or not) is this device.
    From personal experience - calibrating treadmill (even good ones) is a pain since they have different error % at different speeds *and* during contact of the leg with the surface (when the pressure is maximum, so motor must apply extra force).
    fellrnr.com/wiki/Treadmill_Calibration did good research a few years ago and I improved it later for my needs, but in the end its a waste of multiple hours.
    The biggest issue is getting a reliable speed measurement on the treadmill - to get it right you would need to make measurements at that exact speed while applying running pressure.
    Btw - Stryd is not that bad on the treadmill, but it's still could be waaaay off, especially with the latest firmware versions.
    With the latest firmware is totally unusable for me - it went from being 15-20 seconds off at slow 6min/km speeds to up to 80 seconds off at same speed. =(

  • @EGL24Xx
    @EGL24Xx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my experience, the accuracy of the Stryd is pretty poor. I ran a 5k and it came back with 2.95, which is just over 5% off. The percentage is pretty consistent across various other races I've run. Then again, I'm not running a perfect tangent course, so the accuracy is actually even worse than that.

    11:45 - Aren’t you getting too much credit from the treadmill? On the chart it looks like you set the treadmill to speed x and it instantly gives you credit for that speed, but really the motor is still working up to that speed, so the real distance is lower - hence the lower readings on the other devices?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually interesting. The treadmill itself ramps speed pretty quickly, and it shows that speed ramp on the device after you set it (so it shows it speeding up), and all that's roughly accurate. Where it's inaccurate is the top-speed. About 30-seconds into the interval it's like the treadmill goes 'Oh crap, I never truly reached the top speed, let me try and fix that', and then randomly surges. So for the first 30 seconds of the interval (after the 3-5 second ramp period), it's stable but reading high (actually going slower by about 1KPH), and then at the 30-second marker it freaks out like when you're nearing the finish line and realize someone is about to overtake you sprinting.

      My Proform treadmill shows roughly the same deviation to my calibrated Stryd footpod as shown here in this video. On the Stryd forum there are more questions about treadmill accuracy and what's apparently also a factor is that the treadmill slows down when you land on it and accelerates when you are in the air

      I don't know. I think it's totally dependent on whether your treadmill falls into the same category. My treadmill kinda does given the low mileage I put on it, and thus, this unit would by association. However, if you use your treadmill all the time, then this would get equal use.
