Hello everyone and welcome back to Brink of Speed.
    My Brink of Speed store⬇️
    stores.daggercustomapparel.com...
So, today I will talk about Cylinder Deactivation in the C7 Corvette and how to avoid 2 disasters that this causes. It is definitely what caused my C7 Z06 to have the lifter issues and make me have to get a new engine. This also causes major problems for the A8 transmission with its torque converters. You've probably heard plenty of C7 owners talk about having to get their torque converters replaced either once or a few times, well, cylinder deactivation is responsible for that as well.
Leave me a comment below and let me know if you've experienced either of these 2 disasters. Support this channel by clicking the link below and subscribing!

Unfortunately the way to make a corvette that inexpensive is to share parts with the rest of the fleet. You should care about your gas mileage if your own a Corvette. if money isnt an issue, upgrade to a car that doesnt wreck itself by cutting out half of the engine while running at highway speed.

I had this discussion with a friend a year ago, so we tested it. My 7 speed manual would only go into v4 mode when the Eco mode was selected. All other modes stayed in V8. Since the C8 is a dual clutch, hopefully GM will configure the cylinder deactivation to only work in Eco mode.

I agree, my 2019 Grand Sport 7 speed manual doesn't go into V4 unless I put it in ECO. I was trying to get home from the mountains last summer in ECO mode and when it kicked back into V8 as I transitioned from downhill to uphill it let out a loud CLUNK! Yeah I’ve used the range module for about a year and works great. The Chevy dealer service manager actually encouraged me to buy the module and said it would not void warranty.! Placing your automatic in manual mode will keep the car from going in 4 cylinder mode however you have to then manually shift. The module is a cheap investment IMO and works seamlessly with your car. The main reason GM uses deactivation is to increase the federally mandated gas mileage per car. Deactivation is fairly cheap for the manufacture to increase gas mileage because it is basically just a software program. I would rather do a deactivation work around than have Corvette go back to what they did in the 70’s and reduce horse power equivalent to a pinto!

I'm about 9 months into owning my '18 Z51/A8 trans. I was unaware of this issue, didn't know "AFM" was a thing. Had the shudder, Chevy did the triple flush underwarranty, and the service writer there enouraged the range device. So I did. only hitch in this is if the car sits for a couple weeks, need to put the battery on a tender as the device does draw when connected to the OBD port.
But otherwise, driving with pride and no worries about that silly V4 mode.

  • @cereid85cr

To avoid V-4 mode in my 2015 Silverado, I just put it in manual mode and 5th gear. Therefore it only works gears 1-5 without V-4 mode. Corvettes use V-4mode more cause they have less wind resistants. Chevy trucks (shape like a BRICK) stay in V-8 mode more than Corvettes because they are less aerodynamic. (on the highway)

When they pulled my block apart to hone the cylinders and put forged racing pistons and rings in there they actually deleted the system from the engine internally. Glad I took it to a speed shop that knew what they were doing. When I bought it the guy had only deleted it from the computer system and just threw on the blower. After about 10k miles the front main seal went. When they took the engine apart half my piston rings were broken. Don't just add a supercharger without beefing up the internals!

So now to the heart of your question. Yes, when you are in manual mode the engine stays in V8. That is true either by hitting the "M" button or by entering "temporary tap" by pulling one of the paddles. Temporary tap will revert to "Drive" after about 5 seconds if you don't request an additional shift in that time. AFM is also de-activated in "Track" mode. Since PTM is only available in Track mode, the answer is yes to that one too. If you are in PTM, it will be V8 only. New for 2020 is the "Z" mode which will come from the factory set up as an extra sporty mode including shift schedules pulled from the "Track" mode, so that will be V8 only. Of course, you can customize "Z" mode any way you want, so if you elect another shift pattern, AFM will return.

I own a 2014 Z51 M7. Same as the others have posted. Only time v4 mode will occur on my C7 is in Eco mode.
Regarding the comment on the torque converter - there is nothing mechanically or controls wise that link cylinder deactivation (v4 mode) to issues on a torque converter. I have a Tahoe that I’ve been driving for 9 years and has cylinder deactivation - no issue with the torque converter.
On the C7 A8 the known issue with converter (shudder) is due to the fluid being hygroscopic. GM has made several fluid composition changes to try and address the water absorption - research it.

  • @z-ra
    @z-ra 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The only reason I ever got the A8 is because it has the manual mode. It sucks that V4 can ruin the parts but we still get great MPG on V8. I didn't know that V4 was activated outside Eco mode, though. I've been on manual mode since the beginning 99.99% of the time anyway.
Hopefully GM will have the V4 not be an issue on the parts for the C8 if it's still forced upon.

I have the "Range Technology" plugged into mine for that very reason, which was to avoid the cylinder deactivation for the reasons you mentioned. Along with the technical issues, it was just irritating and downright wimpish sounding. I would suggest going to the ordering directly from the site versus Amazon due to the fact that I read (can't recall the site forum), that there has been some updates from original. I only have 17K on my '15 with about 1k with the plugin so hopefully no damage has been done. Gas mileage wise it hasn't been a concern since I wasn't buying it for heavy travel and more so for the things that are totally contradictory to good gas mileage. I still get around 25 mpg when cruising so that's good enough for me. Hope this helps and good luck vettebro!!!

I can confirm as long as you stay in manuel mode and use the paddles to shift as I DO 95% of the time the cylinder de-activation will NEVER EVER engage!!....regardless of speed or rpm or gear as long as M MODE IS ENGAGED you are safe from that deactivation ever happening...i have WATCHED the vehicle stay in V8 mode for hours and NEVER turn to V4.....so the brink of speed guy is correct and and do as i do and stay in manuel always....the car runs great that way and the engine disasters will be AVOIDED!!..........

Hey Mike, I had a 2017 GS, M7 trans and I believe that deactivation only worked in eco mode. I drove a lot in eco mode trying to get good mileage especially on trips. I did not know that it was hard on the engine and trany until I watched your video tonight. I was not informed at the dealership that the car even had this feature when I bought it. When I drove it home from the dealership the car would jump when it switched to V4 and back into V8 mode. I thought something was wrong with the car. I figured out what was going on and just accepted it as normal. I traded the car in August 2019 with 9145 miles on it for an allocation on a C8 HTC. My order was pulled by GM today. Order statusis now 2000. What a good day it is. I think that I heard that the C8 will have deactivation on it also. Hope that it has a mode that it won't work in. Should check with Range technology to see if they will send you one to show on the channel. I have looked at many vlogs talking about these, and the good thing is is doesn't void the warranty, you can install and remove at any time to reactivate, and it doesn't leave any trail that it was installed. Everyone agrees to buy direct from Range due to them giving free updates as GM changes and sends updates to your vehicle via the computer systems. I have a Silverado and a Stingray, the sweet part is the device is interchangeable between the two vehicles.

Another great video!!! I have a 2016 Z06 with 13K miles, this car has been babied since day one. I recently started experiencing Torque Converter Clutch TCC "shudder" (see TSB 18-NA-355). The TSB calls for a complete transmission fluid flush and replaced the new and approved Mobile 1 fluid (blue label bottles - 24 to 26 quarts). The TSB calls for the car to be driven at least 200 miles after the fluid replacement to determine if it fixes the shudder problem - in many cases I've read it does fix the transmission shudder, however in my case it didn't. I'm taking the Z06 in again to see if the TCC needs to be replace - they run a "snapshot" frequency diagnostic that must be sent into GM as proof before they will authorize the TCC replacement. This is very serious and it must be costing GM a bundle and if you are out of warranty it will cost Vette owners a bundle. I believe this issue is pervasive across "ALL" 8L90 transmissions and that GM should extend the warranty for this transmission to at least 100,000 miles.

@@stormcrow5198 Theres a current gm service bulletin to completely flush and fill your auto trans fluid with a reformulated Mobil 1 fluid, and naturally filter change along with that I imagine. The factory fill has been found to draw water condensation so much that it contaminates the fluid, seemingly causing the shutter. I think the new adjustment period after this is they have you put 200 or 300 miles on ,to get the new fluid pressured through the clutches, bands and gears. I've heard if this dosen't fix the shuttering then I think the next policy step is torque converter replacement. If after that then nothing left but to replace your transmission. Contaminated fluid does progressive damage to the rest of the trans. If it's a low milage car, hopefully the fluid change does the trick. I'd be all over it on them about the torque converter if you still get jerky shifts. I just bought a new 19, one of the last manuals, hopefully the clutch doesn't wear out in 6 mo. Good luck at the dealer. Oh one more thing ,you can have an oil sample analysis done on your trans fluid to find out if it has water in it and to what percentage of it any other wear materials that are higher than threshold levels to back a claim. If you did that first before you go to the dealer, then you have proof of contamination levels. They can't argue with science. I was the oil analysis monitor for my maintenance unit in the Army years ago. This technology was was amazing for 1986 and how the lab would find problems before major damage. Everything got lab checked monthly and now it's been commercially available for years.

USMADE1 Yeah, that would keep it for the most part out of V4 mode. As far as the torque tubes go, I’m not sure about the bearings thing. You could probably find info on the forum about that though.

For sure all of the vibrating when in v-4 mode is destroying the bearings and bushings in the torque tube 100% !!

    Words of advice......drive faster.
I never drive my Z06 that slow. Fast cars are designed to run fast - so that’s what I do.

Hello i know im a Year late to this video but i was driving my Corvette that i bought for my birthday 4 months ago February! 2015 Stingray 1lt yup nothing fancy! Well i was driving home from a friends house i had it on Track mode and on Drive and i heard a loud clunk! When driving trough streets at low rpms then getting on the gas on the empty streets! I googled it and i saw that it did go into v4 mode and then rapidly switch back to V8! Now does this happen to everyones corvette? I hate the fact that mine is Auto but its all i could find at the time and now this? Having to drive it on Manual paddle shifters does get annoying! Specially when im rolling around with the lady…

I just watched a TH-cam video on this a week ago by Bladed Angle. Someone in that video commented that if you pull fuse 32 if will turn it off. Tadge also left a long comment in that video. I’m glade my Z is a manual.

Sorry, I was misinformed guys. Fuse 32 turns the exhaust valves off that control AFM so you don’t get that drone sound when it goes into V4 mode. Also fuse 42 turns the other exhaust valve off that allows the exhaust to become louder sounding.

After further talks pulling fuse 32 might also turn off AFM. I would try it before spending $200. My Z is in storage so I won’t be able to test it on mine for a few more months.

Big thanks for this real world problem. 99% of bloggers do not talk about real world maintenance issues coz they only test drive the cars. But here is my problem.. 2017" C7 GS auto is on my dream list and I am saving for it and I live outside of USA and my plan was to buy from a Corvette dealer. Do the big dealers offer service like analyzing fluids of a car for a fee ? Kind regards.

    With a manual
    transmission, the system is only
active in Eco mode. With an
    automatic transmission, the system
is available in all modes, but is more
    aggressive in Eco mode.

Mike, afternoon from Geneva. Watched your video and was both intrigued with the info you shared as well as concerned. You specified both the C7 (I will assume 2014 - 2019) as well as the new C8. Is that correct data? Blue skies, Jg

John Glynn Hey there John. Yes, it is all C7’s except the ZR1 and the new C8 is going to have it as well. I currently don’t know specific details about the C8 though.

Hiya! Check specs on '68 or '69 Cadillac deVille had a 500 hp V-8, that at a certain highway speed, it electronically changed to V-4. I'm not real sure of the exact year, but Caddy did it a while back. Check it out. Have a better year than '20.

Is there a permanent way to do the AFM delete as opposed to getting the ranger?

I tested this on my C7 Z06 and it never goes to V4 mode even in Economy mode. Is it maybe because its a Z06? I dont know.

I got a camaro with V4 mode a little while ago. How many miles did it take for the car to break? Was it covered by the warrantee? And last, how long did it take to fix, because I'd need a rental if this happens. I'm definitely not going for a C7 or a C8 if this is a problem with the camaro.

Adriel Lettman It happened with about 11k miles on my car. It was covered under my warranty yes and they gave me a rental car.

Am not certain how this will work with the dual clutch c8 trans. May not know until we get some vehicles on the road racking up some miles
