  • Click to subscribe: bit.ly/1Tb2yUt - The green spotted puffer can be a bit of a misunderstood fish because it is often sold as a freshwater fish. While this may be true at the time of purchase, it will require extra care to convert it to a brackish fish while also being aware of several other needs it has. First, you have to tend to its beak. You either have to feed it the proper feast of snails or clams…or trim its teeth. Speaking of teeth and food, they are messy eaters. Learn more about what I’ve learned from my time with this amazing fish.

    I have had two for about 5 years. In pairs they are fine. Mine are very passive with each other and other tank mates. 6-8 months in fresh, 1 year in brackish, about three years in my full marine reef tank. They thrive in saltwater aquariums once mature. They are both about 3.5 inch's. To keep the beak down I feed Omega One shrimp pellets. They don't get soft, so the GSP's need to chew them. Works great, never have needed to trim beaks. They are like a salmon of sturgeon in the wild. Live i in the ocean lay eggs in fresh water of rivers. Jr's stay in fresh water and gradually move to brackish waters of river mouths, then out to sea at maturity. They also love dried sea weed. They go crazy for it when I put in for the Tang's. Great fish, very hardy and resistant to parasites and Ich

      Creative Fish Studio it will only grow as big as it can in the tank so it will stop growing if you keep it in that tank long enough

    Some brackish fish seller said that brackish fish come from environments where the salinity is always changing making them very adaptable he said what’s more important then salinity is a high ph and water hardness (a high calcium and magnesium content ) ... what are your thoughts on this ? he said he found adult GSP miles up river where there is no salinity present

    • @BigBoyz_Tankz
      @BigBoyz_Tankz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is doing fine and that’s the same mentality I’ve had with them. They are born in freshwater because they swim back upstream where it’s low in salinity

    When you had this puffer fish was your ph at an 8 And was ur general hardness (calcium and magnesium ) high like similar to an African cichlid aquarium ? I’m curious as to what exactly the requirements are for the longevity of this fish . I find it odd that it can live in fresh water as a baby but as it matures needs salt water ??? Is it the sodium , chloride in itself or is it the trace minerals like calcium , magnesium , potassium , sulfate , and carbonate that promotes the health of the green spotted puffer . How would a fish be able to survive in fresh water and then need salt water there has to be more to it maybe a specific mineral that it requires because the adult GSP go back to fresh water to spawn and then the process repeats itself

    Awesome video! I've been wanting to keep one of these for a while now but I'm afraid of how aggressive they are said to be!

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +dwsdarius they can be aggressive. The tank I got them from had a bunch with nice chunks taken out of fins and flesh. And then I've seen them in others where they might have an occasional nip, but seem ok together. This one is doing well on his own and has lots of character, so I don't want risk changing that and stressing him out.

    • @robbyella637
      @robbyella637 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dwsdarius definitely depends on the fishes personality and also the tank setup. I had a figure 8 puffer tank (2 in a 45 gal) and just added a gsp. Its so funny because the 8's rule the tank. My gsp doesnt seem to be to aggressive as of now at all. As long as you have lots of hiding spots amd tons of space you should be ok with specific mates. Going strong and had them all for over a year , well see what happens when the gsp grows bigger

    Very helpful video, thank you. I am researching at the moment as I would love one of these, but need to load up the grey matter with lots of info first. I didn't notice you saying in the vid, but how long would you recommend leaving it before starting the conversion to brackish water, especially if the fish has been raised in fresh water? Also, how do these fish cope if bought online and posted? Thanks in advance!

    *******Sorry about the previous post! It was an accidental push of the button.*******
    What I meant to say was....I’m so glad I came across your video! Not only was it extremely helpful, but you probably saved my puffers lives. Although, I am so pissed at the pet store (Pet Supermarket) that sold me my three GSP’s. I swear, I can’t believe they get away with some of the things they tell customers! I asked three different ways to make sure I was getting the correct information to be able to care for these fish. Now I feel horrible and not sure where to go from here. But, the lady that sold me my fish said “there is not extra care or different food needed for the fresh water puffers” and “ they can stay fresh water all through their lives. So I proceeded to buy four. One of them just died, I’m sad to say. They really are a cool fish to watch and look at. Unfortunately, I’m not quite sure of exactly what he died from but I have a totally fresh water tank with a variety of different fish in it and have had no intentions of having it converted or to start up a salt water tank. I just don’t have the time nor the patience. Plus I have all these others that are fresh water all their lives. I have a 55 gallon tank with blue cray fish, bumblebee gobies, a shark fish, guppies and snails (which now probably won’t have the snails for long by the sounds of it). I NEVER would have purchased them knowing what I found out today about the water needing to be converted and the different care they require. I feel horrible for them now and really....not sure what to do! In any case, thank you for your video. You did a great job of explaining and being smart enough to know to make a video in that other people may not know the same as you didn’t. ****to the comment about making a video after the other two died.... at least this guy had the b***s to try and inform other rather than put someone else down for trying to help others! Shame on the disrespectful cowards like you!****
    Thanks again and you should make an update vid. For those of us who appreciate your kind/ness.
    Smilemkr~

    Ive had the same reason originally i bought three of them but then they started attacking each other , they’re very aggressive towards any fish. So two of my GSPs died and there’s only one left. Ive had him for a year now and hes still going strong. My water is still mixe with salt/fresh water and hes loving all the live feeder fish/worms/snails i provide him weekly. If you feed them correctly they will survive longer :). Just dont forget about the mix of salt and fresh water.

    Thanks for the video but WHEN EXACTLY must they be transitioned into the BRACKISH/SALTWATER environment? I purchased 2 GSPs and one died after about 3 months and then the other died about 5 months after they were purchased (as ~1.5" JUVENILES). I was going to start adding BRACKISH SALT approximately 1 YEAR AFTER PURCHASE - Is this TOO LATE? When do you start the transition and how Slow/Fast do you TRANSITION THE WATER BY ADDING SALT before it reaches FULL SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF 1.022? Thanks for your help!

    Hi, Great video! I just bought my first GSP and I'm in the process of converting the water over from brackish to salt. Just Love this little guy! In another tank I have a porcupine puffer who just turned 16. I am wanting to change substrates for my GSP tank and was hoping you would tell me exactly what substrate your using in this particular tank. Brand name, size of grains etc.Would really appreciate it! Also I'm desperately trying to find the Clam on a half shell you used in your video, hope I can find it. When I bought my porky puffer 16 years ago I was clueless about a lot of things and especially about the teeth/beak but Luckily, unbeknownst to me I managed to keep her teeth filed down by accident! She got hooked on the Tetramin tablets I was putting in the tank for my hermit crabs!

    you can find pond snails in almost any pet store that sells fish. the pond snails are considered a nuisance, so you can usually get them for free. they are prolific breeders. I use to have a 1 gallon tank to breed them in. I would feed them lettuce, strawberries, and other vegetation. the tank gets smelly, and you should expect to do a full clean at least every other week if not weakly. but it is a great way to procure crunchies for your puffies.

    I have three spotted puffers. All of them are babies and are in a 20 gallon tank (for now). I'm just wondering, when should I get the 55 gallon tank for these guys? I'm planning to have a 100 gallon tank to house three of these guys in the future once their full grown, however, transitioning from tank to tank is hard and I'm confused when to move them.

      The sooner the better on the 55 gallon. It's a lot easier to keep your water parameters in check with a larger tank...and these guys are messy eaters. :)

      They are messy eaters. I'd at least clean out uneaten food and do a partial water change each week.

    Used to have one of these fish, let someone sleep on my couch after a party and he poured a huge bottle of hot sauce in my 105 gallon connected 4 tank setup for some reason (for which I don't understand) and it died. Found out what happened the next day after finding red residue around the tank and seeing the hot sauce bottle empty.

    I have my puffer in a marine tank one question? If I put freshwater snails in the tank even if there dead will he eat them? I'm just asking because salt water snails are expensive

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Daniel Pippitt I haven't gotten mine to full marine yet, but it eats the frozen clams I give it. Not sure about the freshwater snails. It seems like they would live long enough to get devoured.

    • @bobbyching7502
      @bobbyching7502 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Daniel Pippitt From my experience my GSP eat anything I put in the tank. Mine is full marine and i often drop some freshwater snails. Either alive or just with the shell, he will eat it.

    I have 2 of these that are only about a inch long. When should i start raising the salinity?

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      at 1 inch you can start to very slowly increase salinity during water changes. I did small water changes with 1.005 salinity. This would dillute when added to the tank. I kept adding that amount until the tank reached 1.005. Then I added 1.010 until I got the tank to that point and stayed there.

    I bought a Green Spotted Puffer and it's still a juvenile, but it will only eat bloodworms. That's the only thing the pet store's owner said they were feeding them. I tried to feed it snails and dried krill, but it wont eat any. Help?

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say to keep trying. With the freeze dried krill, try breaking it up with your fingers underwater. That helped mine start eating it. Then I stopped doing that and they would eat it from the surface. Instead of snails, get frozen clams...the half shells that already expose the meat. If you drop that in...it should go crazy for it.

    Mine is about to progress into salt. Thing is i have no space for a sump. What do I do about filtration?I was just going to get a protein skimmer and a coupla powerheads. Is this ok? I thought about live sand and rock but got told the gsp would pick out the life from it so it would be a waste of money. is it True¿

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome to hear about the progression. I don't run a sump on either of my saltwater tanks. It's definitely the way to go if you have the room. I'm just running a protein skimmer and HOB filter that I put my bags of carbon and ChemiPure in. Not sure about them picking the life from the live sand and rock. They might eat your corals if you add any of them. I'm no expert...just a guy learning with everyone else. :)

    • @jordanm5386
      @jordanm5386 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for reply.
      I heard that running a filter with foam\sponge inside is bad in a salt tank. Is this true?
      Unfortunately I can't use a hob. Filter either due to the lid\hood. The brackish tank that it's currently in is just running a foam filter with a weekly water change.

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard multiple things on that. It doesn't work the same way with beneficial bacteria and the focus of pristine water quality is much higher with saltwater tanks. The foam or filtration used in most HOB filters needs to be cleaned regularly to remove the suspended particulate that gets caught in the filter. Otherwise you it starts decomposing on the filter and your water gets out of whack. That said....I run a HOB filter on my 40 Gallon Breeder and have a foam insert in my 29G BioCube filter in the back. Everything seems to run fine if I keep up with water changes and rinsing the filters...if not...I come back from a work trip to recovery stage.

      o.k. thanks. suppose laziness is not an option when you have life dependant on you.
      ive decided to keep him in high brackish for a few more months.
      im going with a fluval canister filter, power head, live rock, and sand. for when the final change happens.
      im off to clean some sponges :)

    Are you aware there are THREE GREEN SPOTTED PUFFER species? One is fully freshwater, the second is brackish & third marine. So you need to know which it is. Start with its correct scientific name.
