    Hello everyone! There's a slight update on the tank size requirements for these Figure 8s. As they are a more active species of puffers, we believe it is ideal for one to be placed in a 30 gallon tank. Your puffer will thank you for it! 🐡

      Thank you for this video. I saved one that was in fresh water only, it had sores, and ick very bad, it's tail was chewed up. I took him home, I have hard water, and can make harder. I also add some brackish water salt in the water for him. With in days, his sores where gone, his ick is gone, his colors are bright.

    My first puffer back in the day was a Topaz, but it was sold to me as a figure 8. I realised pretty quickly that it was a Topaz when it started developing spots on its belly. The tank I had it in was only big enough for a figure 8, and was set up as a low brackish tank, about 1.005. Fortunately my mother allowed me to upgrade to a larger aquarium so I could still keep it (I was a child / young teenager at the time), and I set it up as my first FOWLR marine aquarium. I consider that to be the start of when I became serious about the hobby and became a proper fishkeeper. Before that I'd say I was more of "casual".
    I also kept the small tank that I originally had it in and set up as a freshwater tank for a red tail red eye puffer.

    • @BeFishy
      @BeFishy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, stores usually mix these 2 species up and it's pretty bad, considering they require totally different needs. Glad, the topaz puffer made its way to you! That's wonderful that you're able to upgrade and keep the topaz in a fowlr tank!
      Nice! Is it the irrubesco that you've mentioned before?

    • @The-Fishkeeper
      @The-Fishkeeper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeFishy Yes it is a real shame, though it worked out well for me in this specific situation as it was my excuse for making my first step into marine fish keeping, which then led to me starting my first reef tank a few years later when I was old enough to afford it, about 12 years ago, which has been a very big part of the hobby for me from then on until very recently. Also it was probably the single most beloved fish I ever kept, and my family loved it too.
      Yeah, it is the same Irrubesco, I've only ever kept the one. I got it just a few months after my Topaz, which then started a bit of an obsession for me and I kept several puffers species throughout the years, Mostly Dichotomyctere and Canthigaster. Sadly I had to re-home all my puffers and other fish when I first moved out into my own place due to space and financial reasons.

    • @BeFishy
      @BeFishy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tubefeetmackay3693 That sounds great! Clean up crews are a bit hard for puffers as they tend to eat them. But sometimes, they'll leave a ghost shrimp or 2 alone and those do help clean the tank up. However, with puffers, regular water changes is advisable as they're quite messy eaters. 😊

      @@BeFishy well i keep a reef tank and discus tank. i have to use some RO for discus as our tap water is v hard so this tank will only need RO for top up like my reef, this makes water changes far more easy fast and cheap. thanx for the tip on clean up crew, also is there is some live sponge in your tank, i am still confused about brackish cycle etc how salty can you make it can some sponges survive as they make good filters.

    • @BeFishy
      @BeFishy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tubefeetmackay3693 RO water is definitely good for top offs. Sorry as I am a bit confused. Are you talking about sponge filters or sea sponge? As Figure 8s live in low brackish water, I do not recommend sea sponges as they do require marine parameters. If you mean by sponge filters, then yes. I do have sponge in my filter compartment as well as filter medias.

      Yes, you may. I do recommend ramshorn snails as they breed much faster, if you're thinking of setting up a ramshorn snail culture. The only hard part is sourcing meaty foods that will grind down their teeth.
      And still that's not too hard. I buy small raw frozen shrimp at the store. I unthaw and feed him one section of shrimp a day. Then a few ramshorm snail every couple days.
      And the other thing is buy a refractometer to get the salinity right. They're more accurate than a hydrometer.

    I keep seeing your puffers with ghost shrimps, are they their tankmates or food? I'm looking into getting a few as his tankmates but I assume they're going to get eaten at some point. A very informative video, thanks.

    • @BeFishy
      @BeFishy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The ghost shrimps aren't meant to be tankmates, but as treats for enrichment purposes. My puffers would go for them initially but after the first day, some will refuse to eat them entirely. Thus, they become sort of like my cleaning crew haha. But do bear in mind, puffers are aggressive in nature and most will go for the shrimps first. I feed my puffers a varied diet, thus may be the reason as to why they might not be interested in the shrimps. :)

    Can we hold them? Is it safe?

    • @BeFishy
      @BeFishy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Technically yes, but no. Puffers have a slime coat that protects them from infections and such. Handling them too much may cause irritation to their slime coat and expose them to diseases. We should not hold them out of water and make them puff up as well as they can't expel air out by themselves. Trapped air is detrimental to a puffer's health and can cause a puffer to die. As for us humans, in terms of poison; puffers are poisonous and not venomous. This means that we can die from eating them BUT not from holding puffers. :)
