    Mac's will never be not over priced. The only Mac I've had that held its value (at least for basic video editing and motion graphics) was the iMac pro. Anything more advanced than that...I feel windows+Nvidia is gonna be hard to beat for the foreseeable future.

      @@dannybcreative For sure...like I said, editing and motion graphics even on an intel iMac pro was a better experience than on any PC. But yeah, for Blender Bob's audience, and for things like 3D, machine learning, virtual production, unreal, etc...apple may be out of those loops for a while (especially with unreal...considering it's history with epic LOL)

    I've been a long time desktop Linux user. I love picking parts and building up my pc, upgrading it with time.
    I think the M1 family of chips is great, I love ARM.
    But I believe the best value is not in the highest tiers, unless you exclusively do work that leverages the very specific stuff that M1 Ultra and M1 Max do really well, which is anything related to video editing, unsurprisingly.
    For anything else, the price is just too high for most people, imo, with no real overall benefits if you want to replace a proper desktop, where power consumption is way less of an issue.
    I own a 16" M1 Pro and I think that's the sweet spot if you want a laptop that complements your desktop. More than fast enough for general usage, still pretty good for video editing, amazing battery life, silent, great display, great speakers, good keyboard unlike pre M1 Macbooks.
    It's the first and only laptop that I actually enjoy using, battery life alone is a huge positive factor for me, I never feel anxious about having to recharge it.

    Your data is wrong regarding the cpu the CPU doesn't have 32 cores. The Ryzen threadripper 2950x is a 16 core cpu with 32 THREADS. This is exactly the type of flawed comparison that leads people to waste massive amounts of money on wrong buying choices.

    • @BlenderBob
      @BlenderBob  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two logical cores can work through tasks more efficiently than a traditional single-threaded core. By taking advantage of idle time when the core would formerly be waiting for other tasks to complete, Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology improves CPU throughput (by up to 30% in server applications3).

    Finally a meaningful comparision. I was thinking that unified memory will load faster and after that M1 will handle it faster. Yes memory loaded faster, no M1 didn't compute faster. May be in the future, AMD and Intels own ARM-SoC will become more avail so more programs will be natively written for those sets... yet I doubt it - since programming rendering and simulations with no precalculated/cached require complex instruction sets AFAIK.

    I said it then (after the annoucement), and I'll say it now. The M1 just doesn't have it. This is in reference to all the people who were saying it was going to be on par with the performance of higher-end Nvidia cards. No way they were going to just come out of the gates swinging that high, or hitting that hard. I want them too. I want there to be competition in the market. Even if the Apple price point kind of makes it sort of a non-competitor in a alot of ways, it would still help bring prices down. The market needs it because if you're trying to do anything 3D on anything but nvidia hardware (this is not counting CPU's I'm just talking GPU's here) there is NO competition.... and it jsut flat out s*cks. I've been wishing AMD would do something, but same thing. Actually probably worse, even with HIP.

      @hardwire666too 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannybcreative Honestly if any of the Affinity stuff didn't outperform everything on an M1 that would be damning. For one it's all 2D, and two, like you pointed out its highly optimized for metal/macOS already as it was a MacOS-only package for a long time. The comparison there is honestly kind of moot though. I mean I havn't had a PC that chugged on Video or 2D anything in a very, very long time. The tasks are almsot trivial at this point. Sure things change when you start getting into intense 4k and above projects, but really when you start getting up there your probably looking at Quadros... or whatever they call them now. Point is that's a whole other ballpark.
      As far as 3D untill they can crush Nvidia most wont care. Because most wont want to pay the premium for a marginal gain. So they would literally have to perform 35-50% faster at the same price point to turn heads. But like you said they havn't had a footing in 3D for so long it doesn't even relaly matter.

    • @hardwire666too
      @hardwire666too 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannybcreative That's are a completely different demographic. They are either already a mac loyal customer, or Completely agnostic. People whos needs are minimal, and not based in performance. Which the Ultra isn't even Marketed towards. I'm talking about PC users who are 3d artists, game developers, video compositing. Besides software, they need to put up numbers to make the price worth it. Because for a lot of us on PC that's all we care about, is performance. The software companies in those feilds are not going to work on native support unless the performance is there, and the customers want it.
      Some people like oranges, some people like grapes, and then some people only care about whats going to keep them alive longer.

      Apple truly did itself a disservice by marketing their chips as faster than .
      Like we didn't know they would've cherry picked very specific use cases and display no meaningful references in plot.
      The value in their chips is not absolute performance, it's performance at low power consumption, which is way more important on their Macbooks than in a desktop replacement.
      They should've been straight honest and leverage that aspect, rather than broadly (and falsely) saying that their M1 ultra is faster than a 3090...

    Hi Bob, love your content, great stuff! I'm just working on a job with physics/simulations in BL3.2 and was contemplating about this topic. In my own testing I was able to confirm what others have said, physics don't seem to support multi core CPU's and they don't use GPU's at all. I have a Ryzen 16core and during simulation it was only using 10 to 13% of the CPU, while my GPU is literally idle. I observed that it did overclock from 3.5Ghz base to 4.1 to 4.2Ghz, another proof that it's all about single core performance. From what I could find, the M1 Ultra is clocked at 3.6Ghz base, which is already really good. I'd wonder if you still have the Mac Studio if you can monitor if the M1 Ultra also overclocks itself. I think this is the biggest hindrance at the moment and has been for a long time in Blender and really wish there can be a way to utilize multi core physics, that would be a literal game changer.

    Rendering is not a fair test? $5000 Mac Studio M1 Ultra is pretty much *destroyed* by a Windows PC that costs *half* *as* *much* .
    And the Windows PC is easily upgraded or repaired. Mac Studio is a disposable computer.

      As I mentioned at the beginning of the clip, Cycles is not optimized for the M1 yet. That will make a big change (supposed to). If you do video editing and Resolve stuff, the M1 is mind blowing fast. You won't find a PC that can steam 18 8k clips at the same time. But I was non the less disappointed for everything outside Apple's ecosystem and I sent it back.

      @@BlenderBob You say not optimized 'yet' ?
      Why should anyone *waste* *their* *time* on M1, when it has maybe a 3% market share?
      Windows totally dominates, and there are more Intel-based Macs out there, than M1.
      M1 is an ARM chip from a cell phone. In a $7000 Mac Studio? omg absurd pricing.
      M1 is mind-blowing fast in Resolve? So is a top-of-the-line Windows machine, and for *HALF* the price. The Windows machine will also be far superior for:
      -gaming
      -Blender or Maya

      @@DerekDavis213 First of all, Blender foundation is NOT spending time on the M1, Apple engineers are doing it. 3%? BMW also had 3% of the car market. So what? There's still a market for it. Too expansive? For you, maybe. iPhones are way more expansive than any Android phone. Yet, they are still best selling phones. A Lamborghini is absurdly expansive while a Tesla is more performant. Still, a Lambo is a Lambo and a Tesla is far from being as sexy. That's part of Apple's marketing. Apple's market capitalization is at 2.51B. Microsoft is at 1.9. Yeah, Apple is way bigger than Microsoft. Not bad of a company that has 3% of the market. Yeah, I've seen the laptops crushing the M1. And it almost caught on fire, it has to be plugged in otherwise the battery dies within 15 minutes. An nVidia 3090 requires an insane power supply. Now imagine you are mining bitcoins on a farm with thousands of machine. The electricity needed for that! When I used the M1 at maximum capacity, I never even heard the fan once. It take a maximum of 215 watts!!! You can't use Prores on Windows, except for Nuke. There's no good codec for working in the film industry on Windows. The MacOS is linux based and it far more superior to Windows, especially for networks. There ar practically no viruses and threats on Macs, of very few. What you are saying is like, hey, Blender is free, why spend 6000$ on Nuke for compositing? Because Blender is no Nuke. 6000$ may be a lot for you, but it's nothing for a company. And it's taxe deductible. Many studies have found that a company running Macs need way much less maintenance than one running on Windows. You save a lot on IT. Listen, I understand your point of view because I bought the M1 and I was disappointed. But it's the M1. At M3 or M5, they will probably catch up with nVidia. I certainly hope so. So you are not a Mac guy and probably never will be. But here's the thing: you are no the target audience.

      @@BlenderBob iPhones are certainly *NOT* the best-selling phones. Android has 72% market share worldwide. Most people on Planet Earth would fricking NEVER waste their money on an iPhone. Apple is anti-consumer, anti-repair, does not pay their fair share of taxes, and Apple Store workers are paid poverty wages. Just awful!
      Apple's market cap is pretty much ZERO help to Mac Studio customers that find themselves with a totally inferior computer:
      -unable to run 100% of Windows apps
      -terrible for gaming
      -weak gpu
      -RTX 3080/3090 are hugely superior
      -dead end machine
      -disposable computer
      -no upgrades or repairs
      You say that 3090 requires an 'insane power supply'? Yeah, 850 watt power supply for 90 dollars is so insane. omg LOL
      Any company that pays $6000 for Mac Studio is foolish, gullible, buying into the Apple hype. A Windows machine for $2000 will destroy, *eviscerate* a Mac Studio in everything except Final Cut.
      But then again, Final Cut is a toy, not used by serious video editors in television, feature films, or million-dollar advertising campaigns.
      Final Cut is popular with high school kids and TH-camrs.
      My first computer was an Apple IIgs. I loved that machine. Today, I wouldn't give Apple a nickel. Not one red cent.
