I don't shoot a ton, but my first firearm was a DDv5, probably around 2-3k rounds in the past 10 years but she still holds up like a champ. I love that feeling of going back in time to when I first purchased her, feels like yesterday.
Great review. You are a great asset to the 2A community. Sent an email to FN on my disgrace that they would not offer classes to civilians, especially yourself. Hope it helps, and I encourage everyone else sends one to the manufacturer of choice from the list!
So I have a Daniel Defense DDM4V5 and I purchased it four years ago. The rifle has about ten thousand rounds through it. I'm able to shoot quite a bit because I have 25acres in southern Ohio and I built a small range on it equipped with several AR-500 targets. Nevertheless after watching this video I went and looked at the firing pin in my DD and it has the exact same kind of cratering on the tip as seen in this video. The cratering on mine is a little bit more center but under magnification it looks almost identical to what this video showed. I wish I could send you a photo or hell even the pin just so you could show students or your TH-cam audience. With all that said I ordered a new one from Brownells.
that's awesome Ryan, kinda makes me happy when I hear someone that has used the crap out of their weapon, that's what its made for. would love to own a DD one day, the price Increase has made it nearly impossible, but 10K rounds show you do get what you pay for 👍
eKY here and too have a nice range on my 25 acres... I have a DDm4v1 with thousands of rounds as well. I will have to go and check out my pin in the morning.
Thank you very much for all the details you provide. It's one thing to read it in a manual. For me, it makes more sense when I have an opportunity to see the info in this format. Thank you again.
This is amazing Work! You're the NCIS of AR-15's! I have learned more about the internal workings on a Micro/Macro Level of an past 32 minutes / 2 videos on your channel, and I'm loving it! SUBSCRIBED!
I just stumbled upon your channel a couple of days ago. I find it very fascinating! I am currently thinking about getting a DD MK18 upper or a high end BCM upper with the same barrel length. My question to you sir, which is your preferred upper or do you have another manufacturer that you like the best? Again, love your channel!!!
Great vid. I use to think DD was just a overpriced AR where folks were only paying for the name, but as more and more of the cheap manufacturers show that they are trash, the expensive brands start to shine.
What head space gauges are those? Every gauge I've ever seen requires you to remove the ejector before using them. Those look like the base is made thin enough to fit over the ejector.
He mentioned what you’re asking in another video. I can’t remember which one exactly, but I think it’s the one titled why I gauge the AR so much. He modified his headspace gauge somehow so he wouldn’t have to further disassemble a customer’s rifle and possibly cause a warranty issue for the owner. He has dimensions for his modified tools he uses, but you have to take one of his classes to get the tech specs. Hope this helps.
Got a link for the gauging tools? I'm looking for a complete set. I do Cerakote and they would prove invaluable before reassembly and diagnostics for my customers.
I have to ask, what is the difference between a 223 GO and a 5.56 GO gage? I know the throats are not the same dimension, but the gage is stopped at the chamber shoulder, correct? The reloading manuals show 5.56 and 223 case dimensions are identical. What am I missing?
Ironbomb it’s the throat because a 223 is much shorter it will not fit regardless of case dimensions being same shoulder is irrelevant it never gets that far in
@@gwkgb8474 thank you for that. I've since noticed Chad's gages reflect what you just stated. The 5.56 has a longer throat that the 223Rem. A 223Wilde should accept both? There is much for me to learn yet. Best regards.🇺🇸
On one end of the bolt check you use a gauge with red ring and the other not, isn't there a third go no go gauge you need to use at 7:24? Also, why check for no magnetism?
I have been thinking of some online courses. I would love to hear any thoughts or suggestions regarding this matter. Thank you for your time and wisdom👍👍✌️
Chad do you recommend replacing bolts at certain intervals? My ddm4 has like 11k on the original bolt. I overhauled it twice with springs, extractor, ejector, pin etc.
It depends on too many variables to give a hard number. These things can have an effect on bolt life: - ammunition used - gas system length - gas port size - gas system efficiency - carrier & bolt dimensions - bolt material & finish - upper receiver trueness - throat & headspace and so on. Some bolts can go 2-3x the round count you have on yours but some don't. If you do consistent visual inspections of the bolt, and check headspace occasionally you are better off than following a round count regiment.
This is my new fav TH-cam channel. Great work very thorough and super interesting to learn. This channel has also given me an even more intense regard for Eugene Stoner ability to design firearms. His base design and the constant innovations on top of the system has made the AR15 one of the most reliable, versatile and influential small arms ever designed. Plus it’s just one of his designs.
For checking headspace, I was under the impression the ejector needed to be removed from the bolt first.... I'm now seeing that doesn't seem to be the case.
that is necessary when setting headspace, like replacing a barrel on a bolt rifle. Checking headspace on a floating bolt just ensures it won’t close on an oversized gauge.
You should remove the ejector from the bolt when checking headspace. I believe he uses gauges that have a cutout to accomodate the ejector being left in the bolt.
Had a firing pin that was heavily magnetized. Took the magnet off a broken subwoofer and ran it through the center of it east to west direction. Took all the magnetism out of it. Basically use either the insert OR the donut. Together they can create too much tension and cause ejection issues. Generally the insert is preferred. .... the donut was developed more as a “bandaid” for weak overused springs and inserts and isnt needed with a decent spring/insert
Why so much grease? We have several AR's as ranch rifles that see higher than average use. The exteriors are beaten and battered but the internals are wiped out and lightly lubed but never that much lube. A couple of the rifles are nudging forty years old with 5k to 10k rounds thru them and no serious failures.
I had a firing pin with similar cratering a few years back that would pierce primers occasionally. I wonder how often does this happen to other firing pins because I've only personally seen it once before this video.
My most used rifle is my 3 gun competition rifle, it has a titanium pin, after the 2020 season, I was inspecting it and it looked like the surface of the moon.
I've seen Springco say that their extractor springs should have the insert or the o-ring, but not both. Putting both could cause binding. Don't know if other spring brands experience the same deal.
