For me tool craft has been my go too because they always work and the price is right and I have recommended them for years. I run Nickel & phosphate and This video lets me know exactly why they have run flawless for years.
I just ordered a chrome Toolcraft BCG. I'm hoping I don't get a wimpy spring. Thank you so much for everything you've taught me over the last year that I've been watching. :D
I wonder if Tool Craft seen this video. They probably never had somebody outside the company QC their parts like this. Thanks for the video. I always wonder about their BCG
Chad, I want to thank you for taking the time to make these in depth videos. I just found your channel today and you have a new subscriber. I originally heard about you when I read your interview with arbuildjunkie on checking headspace, since I couldn't find any solid advice on which gauges to get. Thanks again!
When you say the same, as in they will all accomplish the task at hand, they kinda are.. A lot of these tests he's showing us for example if something "fails" a certain test it doesn't always necessarily mean the BCG isn't going to function. Having a tight or loose tolerance doesn't always mean inoperable. Keep that in mind.
As my buddy always says "mil-spec? Don't insult my rifle like " always cracks me up knowing damn well he carried a piece of shit m4 that rattled damn near in half for half a decade and it saved his life. Fuckin marines, man. They crack me up.
Within mil spec is a relatively wide range, of standardized parameters... “mil spec” ones. That’s all. Tighter is definitely not always better either. Especially with a little lint left in or crud after a few rounds. In the grand scheme of things technically we can only measure to the capability of the device. Say within .0001 but factually no two pieces of anything ever made are exactly the same down to the atom. Even atoms.
Love these physicals. I know like you say these are examples of 1. After what seems to be a long career of seeing how well built manufacturers products are. Would you say toolcraft is a good bcg? Is there a company that really stands out as far as consistently producing BCG that are of high quality and gas efficient?
Seems like all the bcgs ive been getting of late have those "more splayed" retaining pins. i've been keeping a small flathead (1/8" i think) on hand when disassembling just to be able to "push" the splayed leg to aid replacement.
Chad, what causes BCG parts to become magnetize? What is the origin of this issue? Thank you sincerely for your willingness to share your expertise with us. You are a valuable tool to all us AR shooters, and I hope that all of your viewers comprehend the fine service that you given us. Sincere thanks!
Well often times it's people using magnetic trays to hold their parts when cleaning for example. I've heard SOTAR claim it's happened either from manufacturer or transport before so who really knows for sure. Just never use magnetic trays.
Hello sir. I just recently purchase a “lux” modified bcg from WCArmory. It is a Microbest chrome bcg with chrome bolt and phosphated extractor. From what I could ascertain, he gets the bcg’s complete from microbest in bulk, then will modify it for you and ship it. Mine in particular was modified with OCKS retainers (look properly staked), sprinco 5 coil extractor spring, sprinco extractor insert, sprinco ejector spring (chrome sili, cryo treated), and uses an s7 ejector pin. I’d really like to send it to you for a “physical”. I’ve put it in my upper and ran some rounds through it just cycling it with charging handle. I’ve noticed some scars on the bullet but I believe that’s from sharp feed ramp edges and have been told that’s typical. Seems smooth I need to shoot it…but I feel like I got a deal at $124 shipped for this custom bcg.
I have an unfired Toolcraft Nitrided BCG where the rear gas carrier key bolt failed the 30 in-lb reverse torque test, but the forward bolt passed. Should I simply re-torque and forget about it, or is there something more I should do?
Super video. I didnt get the title until the very last second. The BCG got a physical. I thought it was something else. Lost my coffee cup this morning also. Well done on this video. I learned a great deal.
Hey your videos are awesome! I'm looking for a mid-range bolt carrier group could you please recommend one that in your opinion would offer the best quality.
@@chadc437 that's why I was confused. I did a little googling to figure that one out. I'd always just bought. BCM bolt and slapped it in the rifle (or pistol) without much thought.
Thank you for your work and this video. Ordered a new BCG due to my PSA "premium" BCG absolutely eating gas rings up. I will give credit where it is due however... always goes bang... even with only 2 rings.
@Instructor Chad Based off of your experience...what BCGs do you recommend? For someone who has to commit themselves to buying one. BCM? Daniel Defense? ???
I don't think Chad gives direct brand recommendations but you can get a good idea by watching the vids of which companies seem to do well. Join his FB group for more info. Geissele, BCM, DD, Sionics, SOLGW and Toolcraft are all good starting points.
Ethan Ayers Thank you, I figured as much since I can’t find them like this anywhere. I have a lathe so turning them down won’t be an issue since they are in fact not commercially available
So basically not perfect, but still pretty darn good. And assuming a reasonable amount of consistency, not a bad deal for the price Palmetto State keeps offering them at.
Kindve what I was thinking I haven’t seen one of his videos yet where a BCG has done as good as this one😂 they’re normally riddled within the first 3-4 mins
@@solhays he said it was for a personal semi-budget build. It had some problems though and he changed the springs so I dont think it would be one he would get if he just had to pick one to use straight out of the box for a life or death situation.
Love the videos new subscriber. Question i just installed a brand new noveske upper to an lmt lower and the coating on the noveske upper is completely chipping off by attaching and detaching 3 times never fired. Is this normal? Or common? . Any advice would be appreciated

Excellent Information... I have an A.R. 10 bolt carrier and purchase an aftermarket JP Bolt small pen ,I was piercing primers 6.5 Creedmoor The JP bolt was very loose ,very loose. I called them about it and they said that’s the way it was designed. Anyway solve my piercing primers and have not had a malfunction thousand rounds. Using adjustable gas block which is still turned down pretty low...Go figure
After watching a lot of these BCG physicals, it occured to me that these gas efficiency profiles could be separated into two groups. Is it possible a slightly inefficient bolt tail and front shoulder might be better for a combat weapon seeing a high round count and high heat situation with a lot of carbon or other debris whereas a highly efficient bolt might be better for a match gun but would be prone to higher rate of failure in adverse conditions?
Plain & simple response here, found this channel, love the delivery for talking to his audience, knowledgeable

Same here. I look for some specifics in the BCG but all of my upgraded BCG’s are toolcraft

Don’t sweat it. Buy a kit with extra springs. You should have a fix-it kit for your rifle anyway. Toolcraft is usually very good. You’ll be fine.
DD uses the same exact spring set up

This channel is Paul Harrel level informational. 👍
Hahaha!
Just yesterday I realized Chad is to AR15 gunsmithing what Paul Harrell is to practical usage, or Ian McCullum to firearm history.
I just received two of these, they were on sale at PSA.
Thanks for the informative video.

What bolt carrier groups do you recommend?
Further evidence you have to inspect each part as an individual. Reputation is on the whole, but tolerances are individual.

A donut or a spring insert. It always needs a spring.

Too much Extractor tension can be bad for reliability.
