@@seraphim9333 so these claims date back to 2007. Something as evident and as significant as brain damage would've put a total stop to botox if that were the case. Botox has been administered for both cosmetic and health reasons since the late 70's and early 80's, so we would've seen a huge amount of brain damage caused by botox if that were the case. the only cases of brain damage / deaths come from black market injectors. Take 'studies' very lightly. they're usually interpreted wrong / sensationalised by the media. Or pointless studies done on tiny rats

Another thing you didn’t touch on was the supposed diet/ weight loss “benefits” of this tanning drug. Like it (or perhaps something similar) was marketed as a diet supplement bc it supposedly lowered your appetite or boosted metabolism or something. Was that this same chemical?? Like it was proven to be dangerous as well. But I know whatever the diet thing was also made peoples skin darker.
Correct me if I’m wrong about anything. Maybe it was another chemical.

I've always found it really interesting how people from other countries spend thousands on getting fake tan, while in most of Latin America (I know for sure since I've lived my whole life in Mexico) the beauty standard is to be as light skin as possible, and people here, instead of looking for ways to darken their skin, look for ways to make it lighter. Crazy how society makes us feel like we're not enough in our own skin no matter where we are

I met two British backpackers who were so excited to come to Aus to tan and couldn't understand why my mum and I were horrified! I was encouraged to apply fake tan in my early teens and onwards, before "getting your legs out" and wearing shorter more exposing summery clothes because I was "too pale", "white as a sheet", "ill looking", and they'd grimace and make out it was gross and my skin looked bad, too bad to go out and wear short clothes. And then if I did get a bit of tan over the summer I'd be praised for it and told how beautiful my skin was.
But then I'd see information every summer informing how bad deliberately tanning and sunbathing is for your skin and the cancer risk. I hate this culture aspect of the UK.

Back in home country we do Itty bitty braids in summer because it's so hot, first summer in new country my mom did it to my hair because I had a ton of long, thick hair and it was hot. I got called so many things that day and my mom took the braids out that evening. We didn't know it was "unacceptable" to braid a pale girl's hair but who thinks it's okay to tell a 4 year old they're a "wannabe n*gger"? Did they truly think this child who can barely tie shoe laces could've thought "hmm I'm going to braid my whole head for hours to look like a black person." My mom didn't understand since that's just what we always did to our hair in the summer but complied because a 4 year old shouldn't have to deal with being called slurs.

Unfortunately, pro-tanning people love to bombard others with stories like yours by with argument. They’ll say, “I don’t want to be vitamin D deficient,” when we know good and well the average person gets an adequate amount from the foods they eat. Even ultra processed foods are fortified with vitamin D now. And they act like they even apply sunscreen as you’re supposed to. Even with sunscreen, some uv radiation is going to be coming through. Even for those of us with malabsorption and malnourished are rarely genuinely vitamin D deficient. If that’s not their argument, they’ll say how much worse it is to use sunscreen than to just get some sun. And again, there are protective basic clothes that can protect us from uv radiation than JUST sunscreen. I use longsleeve lightweight black cotton shirt during the summer and it does a decent job of reducing sun damage, based off how much less skin damage I incur during a single day (aka developing a tan). Dark colors can sometimes make us hotter, but they work better at uv protection than lighter color clothes. Darker clothes work similar to chemical sunscreens, meaning it absorbs the uv radiation, but your skin is more protected. I’m so sorry for your loss. It is unbelievable that in 2024, people still use tanning beds.

    • @carolbaker2773
      @carolbaker2773 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

@@tiktokmfr (I am a veterinarian) It's really all a game of chance. Cancer is caused by your cells mutating to the point where the normal "off" switch that tells them to stop replicating is stuck "on". Sun damage increases the chance of these cells mutating and by going into a tanning bed you are increasing the RISK/CHANCE of getting cancer. Think of it as rolling some dice as an example. In a normal person if you roll a 6 you get cancer so that means you have a 1/6 chance, but tanning will make it so that a 5 or a 6 will mean you get cancer so now your chances are 2/6. You can get lucky and never hit that 5 or 6 while a person who has done everything right like wear sunscreen and has never burned might roll that unlucky 6. That is why some people who never smoked but lived with parents that did might get lung cancer over a person who has smoked a pack every day since they were 12. You also accumulate damage/mutations over time. You acutally as a 44 yr old have a different genetic makeup than you at 1yr old because you have accumulated damage over time! Now there are other reason like genetics as we do have protections against mutations so you could just have a very efficient immune system over someone else or it could predispose you to cancer like the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that is linked to breast cancer. The poor 23 yr old got very unlucky in her game of chance as well as increasing her odds by lifestyle choices.

As a kid and teen, I spent all summer outside. And the summer is very long here, so I was outside at the pool or out hiking a lot.
But mom wasn’t about to spend money at a tanning salon for me, so her solution was for me to wear a light colored shirt (usually white) outside at the beginning of summer, especially at the pool.
She swore that it would prevent me from getting sunburned and I would get a gradual tan. Then 2 weeks in to summer I could wear a swimsuit or whatever and not burn.
Then one time in the middle of summer we went to a water park and spent all day there.
I ended up with such a bad sunburn on my face, shoulders, and chest that I had blisters on my cheeks and chin.
      It was gross.

Ive been horrendously bullied and STILL get harassment in the summer because of my 'dead-pale legs and dead-coloured face'. For some reason, im a circus act to be pointed at.
When I was younger, i tried EVERYTHING to get a slightly darker skin, but nothing worked. Just to not be seen as a freak..
Today, im glad that i found a routine to not burn, and above all - to have a skin that's cancer and wrinkle free.
It may not be the beauty standard to be "dead coloured" pale, acne prone and having eczema patches, but atleast my skin is overall healthy.
A healthy skin is a beautiful skin. And if my healthy, cancer free skin needs to be laughed at, so be it. Never take your health for granted, it really is NOT worth the risk my dear!

Just fyi if anyone was wondering. Tanning machines can be very useful for people with certain skin conditions, chronic illness/chronic pain, disabilities etc. HOWEVER, that is when using the machines little and regularly, so for a few minutes here and there every few weeks it can help with some specific chronic illnesses and conditions, but is still not recommended in larger quantities

But because I have many, it’s hard to know which ones are new, so I avoid sun all together and do my best to keep count 😂

Me, too! I assume people think it's because I don't wear sunscreen although I always do. I have a penny-sized mole between my shoulder blades that showed up shortly after I was born. I remember for May Day senior year I was one of the MC's and wore a dress that came down low enough to show it. Someone commented on it and implied that I should feel shame for not covering up something so ugly. I told her it doesn't bother me and that shut her down really quick. I don't know why we say those kinds of things to each other.

I have extremely pale skin, which bothered me a lot when I was younger. I think I had 2 or 3 sunbed sessions, but it was like lying in a heated coffin and utterly terrified me, so I gave it up! And if anyone hasn't seen the sunbed deaths in Final Destination, I urge you to watch :D I knew I'd never ever use one again after that :D Now that I'm older I no longer give a crap about having pale skin, I wear what I like in the summer and use sunblock, but I'm ok with my pale skin. Took a long time though, so I sympathise with anyone going through it. Every girl always has that one friend with the most beautiful golden skin that is completely natural, and who only has to look at the sun to get a tan :) Just remember though, that they will have problems of their own, things they don't like about themselves, and it just happens that skin isn't one of them. In high school after I turned 18 decided I wanted a tanning membership and would go frequently. I absolutely became addicted and was under false impressions of the “benefits” tanning would provide. I stopped for a while cause of price, but then got back into it when my gym offered tanning. Then one day something clicked and I actually became terrified of tanning in the bed anymore. Realizing that cancer (not skin but other) is prevalent in my family and I’m fair skinned with lots of moles, I decided it’s not worth the risk. And while my cousin is praised for her healthy glow and tan, exotic looking skin, I get yelled at and seen on my deathbed if I so much as step outside in a Tshirt. I put on sunscreen religiously, and still get a little bit of colour sometimes. It happens when one is outside a lot. Every spring its either "Go outside, you need some vitamin D!". Yet If i do sit outside in the sun, I get "Get inside, youll burn yourself and get cancer!".
So whatever I do it seems to be wrong.
Also, my dermatologist said there is such a thing as being too tan. Meaning just because one tans easier does not mean you cannot get skin cancer!

I'm Brit born but in Australia since I was 3yo.
I HATE the sun and the heat.
I get over heated so much and trying to sleep at night when it's hot for days on end is awful and exhausting.
We're one of the leading countries in Melanoma, as people don't wear enough sunscreen.
More ppl are beginning to but a lot of older, (40 plus) straight men will not wear sunscreen or just think 1 layer in the AM is fine for the whole day when they're outside all day working or socialising etc.
More and more ppl are beginning to wear SPF. My mum was vigilant when we were kids so I took that with me later in life but did rebel a bit in my 20s and not use enough and got badly burnt.
There's LOADS of SPFS here in Australia and we have the highest testing in the world of approval levels of SPF.
My dad though, often doesn't wear SPF or enough and gets burnt a lot (he's 64 now) and he's had 2 small moles cut out of his face already and I'm always scared he'll get Melanoma and die. As it's the leading cancer that kills Australian ppl.
Wear your SPF! They even have great spray on SPFs here for those who are too lazy to apply.
There's 0 excuse now as it takes 5 seconds to spray your body with SPF.
We even have ones for sport and work outside that are designed for those who sweat a lot and can't dry off that they can reapply. We have baby and sensitive options etc.
My fave is the La Roche Posay (for the face), no shine SPF for face and the Nutrogena SPF spray can for body.
The la Roche Posay is also good under makeup
White cast at the start that disappears in a few seconds.

About what you said about not understanding why it would be illegal to sell but not to own and use, and thinking both should be illegal to stop it, it's actually the same as with many drugs : making the simple owning and using illegal has proven not to be a good public health method to decrease drug use. People will still try them and become addicts and then want more no matter if it's legal or not. Decriminalising drug use, if paired with prevention and health policies around it, has proven way more efficient to globally reduce drug use in a country (see Netherlands and Portugal as examples). Also repressing drug use costs money (arresting people, reviewing their cases etc) and that money is again better spent doing prevention and healing people ! Obviously drug use still should be an aggravating circumstance in other stuff (like car accidents), but overall it's better not to penalize "simple" users and advocating for harm reduction and public health measures, yet keeping selling this stuff illegal... Hence the difference. In short, it's about going from a crime policy to a public health policy.

@semirelatablesarah453 I actually had several clients that were told to go tanning by their doctors. It was crazy, literally everyone where I lived thought it was safe. It's honestly kinda weird because there was never any science backing up tanning beds, so idk why we all believed it🤷‍♀️

@@AKbaby89 I’m from Ireland so we are definitely lacking in the sun department as well! It’s such a shame how information like this can spread.. iv heard about those lamps for SAD, it would be interested to see if someone addicted to sun beds would find it easier to quit if they started light therapy instead!

@semirelatablesarah453 that's an interesting thought, I hadn't ever considered it. It makes sense though that it may help

I remember 1 person taking about using a solarium in 2010 and all us girlies talked them out of it, I haven't heard about it in Australia since. The sun is SO harsh here, I carry sunscreen all year round! Currently in a heatwave, hiding inside lol

If you are not on vacation currently, here is what I do to maintain a year-long soft tan: I take vitamin c, vitamin d3, zinc and magnesium pills (highest dosage you can find) before bed, because that is most often what your body needs if you are especially pale (or anemic, in very bad cases). It is important to do this before bed, because then your body is at rest and has time to absorb all the vitamins while you sleep, so you wake up nice and refreshed. When I was still dealing with stomach cancer, I had to do this every night, but now that I am completely healthy and cancer-free again, I take my vitamins three times a week. For reference, I have Carribean, Asian and Black African ancestry.

Just remember put sunscreen on but still get out in the sun because vitamin D is really important. Or supplement your vitamin D and keep an eye on your blood levels. We have long winters here and I get really low on Vit D since I stay inside out of the cold, so I have to take a supplement and see my Dr. The deficiency almost killed me.

I did tanning beds for about as month in high school (5 sessions total) for my prom when I was 17 because my mom thought I was going to be "too pale" for my dress. I never really was interested after that, and honestly even doing it felt kind of silly. I tend to burn in 10-15 minutes in the sun as it is.

I will never understand tanning...through any method, using the sun, tanning beds, tanning lotions, excesive use of bronzer... But using drugs sounds really dangerous. On the other hand I am Mexican, I am naturaly brown, I have never looked in the mirror and felt so pale that I think that I need more sun.

The reason that it's often legal to own/use something that's illegal to sell is for harm reduction. If it were illegal to use these tanning products, people might be reluctant to get medical attention if they have problems, or lie about their use making diagnosis harder. And with skin cancer any delay can be the difference between life and death.

I’ve never been very successful at tanning. When I was a teenager in the 90’s I tried but honestly I’d basically just get pink and go back super pale. I just embraced my natural skin tone and now do what I can to protect my skin. SPF, sun hats and parasols. Anything to keep skin cancer away! If I want a little tan, I’ll just use bronzer lol.

I went through a phase of wanting to get a tan due to being in recovery from an eating disorder and anemia. I looked so sick I just wanted to feel like myself again. I was afraid to start using sunscreen in case I looked like that again. A video of a skincare routine where she said her chest was so tan because she used an SPF 30 on her body and SPF 50 on her face convinced me that I can use sunscreen and still look alive.

I am very pale myself & get easily burn, so I avoid the sun as much as possible. I do however understand why people want to tan. As a Norwegian I remember every time summer holiday was over & getting back to school I would get comments about how pale I looked. Most of the kids had been to warmer countries during the summer, while I have been covered in sunscreen & sat in the shade reading. I always hated when other kids or adults for that matter commented on my pale skin. Considering how many of had gotten permanently red from the sun & refusing sunscreen I had absolutely no desire for a tan. My mom also taught me the importance of sunscreen & not use tanning beds. She herself has sun damage from her childhood. I am glad she thought me to be confident in my own skin & paleness ❤
PS: I been called Voldemort, pale as the dead, onion, have you been locked up all summer etc because of my paleness 🤣🫠

I’ve never been able to tan, just turn pink and then white again, and it’s honestly never bothered me that I’m pale af😅 I covered up my belly for like 15 years, and It’s still the same shade as my arms lmao.
But I do get the obsession one can get with something like that, especially if it makes you feel better about yourself. I think people know the risks but just thinks that it wont happen to them

Growing up as a pale girl with acne with skin that loves to burn, I often heard constantly growing up in the 90s and early 2000s that tan skin would help with acne. As someone who knew the importance of sunscreen and impact of sun damage due to family, I tried to explain to others that wasn't the case, but eventually gave up because they just wouldn't believe me. But it was so common to hear repeated.
Edit: As someone who grew up pale, I used to get mocked a lot in middle school and high school. I still get asked if i am sick into adulthood at times.I wouldn't say it stopped me from living life, but i was shamed a lot for it doe I didn't live up to a tan beauty standard. I don't care now, I only share because you mentioned it. I went to a private school in the south where all the other girls could afford to go on vacations or get spray tans, just augmented it. So yes, being mocked for being pale when i went to school happened more than one would think.

I remember when I was a kid, one time when I was at the doctor she looked at my pale af forearm & said “You need to get some sun!” My mom was SEETHING! She said “She’s supposed to be a doctor! She should know better!” This was early 90s, while tanning was still super popular, & most ppl didn’t think it was as damaging as we know it is now, but apparently, my mom knew, & she was pissed lol

Personally, I LOVE my pale complexion! My mom was a huge sun worshipper back in the 70's and 80's, and ended up with this sort of perma tan ( if that makes sense) that I didn't want to end up with! 😂

I remember when i was about 14, i had one of those crazy 80’s “at home” sunbeds that you positioned over your bed or sofa 😬 the timer on mine was broken, I inevitably fell asleep under it one day, was there for about an hour, woke up to my skin horribly burnt and my eyes swollen shut. My dad took that thing up to our garage and took a sledgehammer to it, never touched a sunbed since.
