    Jordan Peterson has made an everlasting mark on me. I have overcome my fear of responsibility, I am finding new meaning in my life that I never believed existed, and I finally cleaned my room.

      The interesting point from this quote is the word "can't" instead of "won't", which means the person is unable to. One of the reasons being alienation from the self.

    He is the father most of us never had. Thank you for saving me from committing suicide back in 2018.
    Edit(June 2014):
    At the time, mid-2018. I did not have anyone that believed in me and my First company that I started right out of Uni failed.
    As simple as that looks combined with my being an orphan and in an unsupportive family all added up perfectly to me concluding I am a failure and I should end it all. This is a simplified version of my 6-month life.
    Now 2024, I Look back at it and have thought about it for years. I have one takeaway for anyone reading this.
    Make sure to carefully select who you let into your life. Always believe in yourself especially when no one else does or after you have failed on the thing that you thought was the core of your being.
    Thank you all and I wish you well.

    Jordan Peterson is such a wonderful person that he renews my faith in humanity. It is incomprehensible that there are people out there that have tried to vilify him. He has improved the lives of literally millions of people and even though I've never met the guy, I have a lot of affection for him and care about his welfare. So glad that the medical issues have been resolved. He's not done making the world a better place.

    • @gyromurphy
      @gyromurphy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      They vilify him because he rips them out of their meaningless comfort zones. He calls those out that fight for the degradation of society. "But but i don't want to work on my self...it's too haaaard"
      Those people that choose to drag everyone down with them instead of make their own lives better. He's a voice of reason....and that's detrimental to their cause. His "pseudo moralistic stance" quote is the one that bites the hardest. It is impossible to hear that and deny it's truth

      I had the pleasure if seeing him In San Jose, California. My brother and I drove 7 hrs round trip. It was 1000% worth it! One of the things that struck me the most was how Haggard and frail he looked in real life. He looked like he was just about ready to wither away. The thought occurred that he looked like he was on his death bed. However, it was amazing to see him roar to life once his lecture started picking up pace! He went from a humble lamb to a roaring lion. You could literally feel the energy! It was an experience I will never forget, and hope to repeat!

    I wish I could thank Dr Peterson for helping me mend the relationship with my parents and Quit Smoking and Drinking . I had lost a pretty decent job or two due to my semi-functional alcoholism. My Daughter was the one who really suffered because I wasn’t in any shape to be what Daughters need In Father’s. I am Scandinavian and I do not know many people like me who give up and allow pity to take control. Fearing possibility of losing my Daughter fired up my spirit led me to think that giving up on myself was foolish. It was two-fold.
    Now almost 2 years later I have kept a very good job with a promising future.
    But the best part for me is knowing my daughter will be the happy and healthy little one she should be .

      That's awesome, man!! Peterson found the ultimate way to make himself Really Useful (just like it tells you to do in all the classic kids bedtime story books when you read between the lines), and in doing so; like attracts like. You can inspire for your own fam and clan too dude, much as Peterson has for you. All the best, stay forever positive and thankful for life and all the possibilities it has to offer! It is a good quote, but it might get misunderstood. Bearing a burden is not the same as renouncing pleasure. Instead the burden that one bears can give meaning to the pleasure we seek, as having pleasure in some regards allows us to bear a larger burden. A teacher who enjoys reaching will be able to go a farther way to teach his students.
      It is rather pleasure to avoid seeking a burden in life that should be avoided.

      @@WoodenHorst I like what you said ,as well as how you said it . " ..the burden that one bears can give meaning to the pleasure we seek." So true! Also, "...as having pleasure...allows us to bear a larger burden." A healthy balance of both "bearing a burden" (giving) and "having pleasure" (receiving) seems to be the mix that most satisfies the human soul.

    • @pollyscookies9180
      @pollyscookies9180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@draco8152 A "burden" would be the taking on of a positive role or task within your world. A responsibility. Like that of being a good parent or a teacher, or an engineer, nurse or community leader--pretty much any position you might hold from which you give of yourself, for the benefit of others. A "burden" could be as simple as "one who carries bricks"... say, as to a construction site.

As an adult, my faith has been a work in progress. I've been attempting to develop my own belief and relationship with God (instead of the hand-me-down beliefs of my parents). But despite my lifelong ties to religious institutions and individuals, I'd never heard anyone express an opinion on belief in God like JP did. It was both overwhelming and inspiring.

    What a breath of fresh air! Peterson, with the comeback! And what a timely comeback it is. Swooping in and bringing with him a genuine unbridled optimism that is not merely empty encouragement during these tough times, but as is his forte, a meticulously constructed and thoroughly well-thought out sincere point of view, that should give us pause. We should all incorporate more of this world view into our daily thinking. Swinging the pendulum back from utter despair and pessimism towards a more optimistic outlook. Thank you good Sir. Great to have you back.

      @Suntower9 I am one person removed from that. I was paid and I worked. But the machines I ran back in the day were in both worlds and they were worked on by mechanics that traveled the world doing maintenance. They (East Block/Soviet and British workers) ran 150 feet per minutes in "the worlds of you pretend to pay us and we pretend to work" and I started when 'our' machines ran 410 feet per minute and in the end I was running 650 feet per minute. I ran competitors out of business.
      And yes I was responsible for the speed. The more speed and product I generated the more was expected. Solzhenitsyn has a short story on this topic ;-) But then the business and processes changed (and I had left it all behind prior) and those men of those related occupations were scattered to the wind in both worlds.

    What an outstanding speaker Dr Jordan Peterson is. He knows so much about psychology, biology, science, history, philosophy, religion, politics, economics, and more besides. He can deliver a wonderful speech like this without any notes or prompts. A remarkable mind and a force for good in our troubled world. Hope to hear him speak live at some point.

    The toughest pill I've had to swallow over the years was that being a good/decent person, as Dr Peterson said, does not mean that life will be good/kind to you...
    That led me to being stoic, pessimistic and nihilistic, until I started watching his lectures and reading his books...And I'm only in my early 20s...

    The really useful thing about a Peterson lecture is not just the content of them. He shows his audience his thought processes. How he gets from one position to another based on facts, deduction, logic, and his own personal experience. One might not always agree with all of his conclusions, but he demonstrates to his audience how to think both critically and for oneself as free as possible from political, scientific and religious dogma.
    While doing so he gives the impression that his lectures are somehow spontaneous, when in fact they are very carefully thought out in every detail, indeed perfected scripted within his head.

    I’m so blown away, I’m actually smiling at the simplicity of the genius being shared here. “Things just aren’t that simple”. We are doing an amazing job as human beings. We have made the world a wonderful place to live, and time to be alive. Yes there is pain and suffering and that’s a hard fact to face, but we all know that that’s always going to be part of the struggle of being here, and we do what we can to limit that for ourselves and others as much as possible, but to think that pain and suffering is what any kind of majority of people are wanting and causing in our world is so simple minded. I become a better person just by watching and listening to this man. To everyone else here, keep rocking and rolling!
