Regarding the fact that DT can simply play to every single person's taste (all genres, styles etc), I think you CAN state that they are the very best of the world.
I went to a drum festival at Berklee College of Music back in the day when Mangini was teaching, what an awesome hyper dude! He was telling us he helped Portnoy get his double bass faster amongst other different techniques. Crazy watching him audition for them.
I love it how Petrucci lets go of the pressure of being the interviewer towards the end of the video and concentrates on the playing and jamming. This whole session could have been a mix of new album songs of DT and LTE. I also have to agree with the commenter who is amazed at the tune after 8:30. Simply amazing.
It's really funny, as a musician for the last 30 years or so, I never really liked DT. I just "Didnt Get it". Since they got Mangini, and I have gotten to be older and hopefully wiser, Suddenly it all makes sense to me now, but only after laboring thru listening to them for countless hours just admiring the musicianship. They are a very deep technical band, and definitely not for everyone. Yes they are a bit over indulgent at times, but hey, when your some of the best musicians in the world, why the hell not. I would rather hear them riff for hours than any musicians I know personally. Now I have been going back thru the catalog, and im really digging alot of their earlier stuff as well. It just takes a while to get to like them, but once you understand where they are going musically, its easy to like.
+Jim Owens I feel similarly. I was exposed to them ages ago, but only in the last 6 years or so have I been digging into their discography and discovering all the hidden gems on each album. It's interesting how some albums didn't stand out much at first and took longer to grow on me than others, but the more I listened, the more I heard the details and the better it gets! Weird because a lot of other bands I like it's the opposite; they have songs that stand out and seem like instant classics, but the more you listen, the more boring and repetitive it gets. lol But yeah, I'm, not knocking other bands or DT, everything has it's place but I have grown to enjoy most of the styles that DT offer, but it wasn't instant. ;)
I can understand that Jim. I was introduced to them about 20 years ago by my bass player at the time.. he played me puppies on Acid from once in a live time (later learned it was an excerpt from the Mirror). after the first 10 seconds of hearing that groove, I fell in love with DT. I literally went out the next day and bought scenes from a memory.. to this day it remains one of my all time fav albums along with 6 degrees of inner turbulence. not only was it fated for me to experience this band but there progressive style carved its way into my own song writing and pushed me to develop on a more advanced level.. Its funny how things turn out. :)
A lot of their songs are very difficult for me to follow, not being a musician myself. But the ones I can, I absolutely adore. Their songs are what I call 'Sonic Experiences', something most mainstream music lacks, in my opinion
This is the DT I want to hear: loose, but tight, experimental, with a discernable groove, and relaxed. Imho, I feel like this is DT at their best, not overblown complexity for its own sake.
I will confess before I make my comment I am not a huge DT fan but I can certainly appreciate the musicianship. Those that know my comments know I am a fan of 3 min punk rock but with regards to the drum battle going on below I can say from a drummers point of view when it gets to this level it is irrelevant who is better than whom as the quality being played is something one should just sit back listen and appreciate. These chaps certainly expect a lot from their drummer. One almighty audition and this chap does not disappoint. To those that have been knocking Mike Portnoy please re-listen as throughout all those awkward time signatures Mike Portnoy is phenomenal. From a drummers point of view I try not to listen too much as makes me realise the gap between the semi pros and the top of the pro tree and it is absolutely huge. Mike Mangini steps into Mike Portnoys shoes and I would say even having the ability to attempt that shows that this chap will very soon become a household name as to play in those complex patterns in those time signatures is worthy of admiration.
For a first time jam with dream theater, you gotta give mangini a break! he has done such a phenomenal job with the band in picking up so much musical traction. it took many years and hours with portnoy to make the dream theater you see now, and mangini pretty much picked it up over night. props mangini! :)
Although Mike is not my favorite drummer, I admit that this improvisation session is beyond mindblowing. Being able to express those ideas proves that he is one of a kind drummer.
"The Show" has nothing to do with the personalities behind the curtain. I watched all the auditions and saw their "vibe". They're ego's are huge. I would never work for or with those guys ... and it is not because I don't have the creative talent or chops.
@@johndoe-rp3hz third comment of yours bashing on dt with probably 2% skill or creativity(whatever instrument you play) compared to these geniuses, jealous much?
@@iamtheone5049 Many more than 3 comments were made, however I do give credit where credit is due. Read my posts. 2% of Magini's skill set is definitely on the low side for a direct comparison and ones creative reality cannot be measured, only appreciated. So what is your point? Jealousy. Does he possess something that I must have? No. And while bandying about the qualifier "genius" that you have bestowed upon these boys, remember that not one of them made it into any of the top music conservatories of the world today.
The problem when people talk about Portnoy is that they think of him as a drummer when in reality he was one of the main songwriters. He was starting to repeat himself to the point there was nothing to repeat, but some of the best DT songs came from his ideas. THAT'S the part thats irreplaceable.
Tecnicly gifted , but left M. PORTNOY 's heart , the first time did i see the audition Mangoni is awesome but the time make me esr better and DT whitout Portniy its like The Rolling Stones without Richard , left the heart and folks in music the hearts plyer makes the diference , i love DT but I start follow Portnoy's job whitout DT abd he never stop too surprise me , I MISS YOU MIKE P
+Chris Thomas If you want to spend a lot of money on overpriced isolated tracks, you can get instrumentals of most of their songs on jammit. Otherwise, Black Clouds and Silver Linings + A Dramatic Turn of Events are the only 2 albums that had a second disc of instrumental versions. There's a few other isolated tracks around about like The Enemy Inside bonus track and various stems ripped from the songs on Guitar Hero/Rock Band games.
Yes, basically DT thought the same way, so they sneaked behind LaBrie and would meet often in an underground set to record new stuff, and thus Liquid Tension Experiment was formed. They also invited other famous musicians to help them along the way. They made two great albums with no vocals because who needs vocals, least of all LaBrie's vocals. Every part of this comment is true.
I think he is perfect fit for DT and I just love the drums in distance over time (especially pale blue dot). Don't know if he had more freedom now than before.
I can't stand this band, but Mangini is an innovator and a unique talent. Portnoy obviously has chops, but there is absolutely nothing unique about anything he does. That's not meant to bad mouth the man as he's built an impressive career. But Mangini is simply in another class in terms of technique and creativity.
Well, there are few that can compare in pure speed to him.But hey, when the speed limit is 55 ya gotta come up with swagger! I think that is where a lot of the monster chop players fail these days. They are so busy working on playing fast, that when a slow section comes up to lay it down straight they all just kinda gloss over it like it isn't that important. But we all know THAT is where it's at !!! Just an observation.
That's how you weed out the good from the great. Timing, change ups etc. a real audition basically bc anybody can show up & throw out some fancy pants beats but the real is just what u see in this vid.
They should really approach music the same way gavin harrison does. DT latealy are now just a band that tries to sound cocky that they have the ability to play in odd time sigs, gavin said its cool to play in odd time sigs but you have to be able to groove/dance or relate to it in any way . and lately the msuics just bland as hell

Weird because a lot of other bands I like it's the opposite; they have songs that stand out and seem like instant classics, but the more you listen, the more boring and repetitive it gets. lol
But yeah, I'm, not knocking other bands or DT, everything has it's place but I have grown to enjoy most of the styles that DT offer, but it wasn't instant. ;)
I wouldn't say it's easy.
I completely get that!

Arief Salim, Extreme, Waiting for the Punchline.
portnoy super saiyan mode hahaha
Mangini is from other planet!
This naturally sounds like a DT song!! Awesome!
But how does he play along to James’ tambourine? See I ask the real questions
Grub Band yg variasi musik'ny paling rumit d Garap, yg selow ajh sulit apa lg yg ngebit..!? 🤓👍👍
Wow, I have a lot of respect for Mangini for keeping up with these guys! A lot of people bash him, but in all actuality he's doing a helluva job.
For a first time jam with dream theater, you gotta give mangini a break! he has done such a phenomenal job with the band in picking up so much musical traction. it took many years and hours with portnoy to make the dream theater you see now, and mangini pretty much picked it up over night. props mangini! :)
8:22 ........ that's how you know when the band was meant to be. Best part of the session. Literally gave me chills
It's a cloudy day, I need to relax, and this helps.
Although Mike is not my favorite drummer, I admit that this improvisation session is beyond mindblowing. Being able to express those ideas proves that he is one of a kind drummer.
8:20 on is SOOO good.
Oh my god, now THAT'S the real DT
I could listen to these guys jam all day....their albums? Not so much....
So who came here because they like Distance Over Time?
In all honesty. Mangini played here far better than he's playing in current shows... With the aggressive feel that DT needs and always had...
Most likely they are burning him out. Fucked up personalities tend to do that.
No way bro. You haven’t been to a DT show lately
"The Show" has nothing to do with the personalities behind the curtain. I watched all the auditions and saw their "vibe". They're ego's are huge. I would never work for or with those guys ... and it is not because I don't have the creative talent or chops.
It's just the way they "carry" themselves, that's all.
@@johndoe-rp3hz nope. No egos in band except maybe for Jordan.
petrucci is a beast.
But that doesn't make him a great PLAYER.
I’ve never seen a drummer more aware of himself and his surroundings. This is a little surreal.
That's what a professional musician should be, always!
Portnoy is unique in his way, but I have to say, I don't miss him at all. Mangini does a really good job.
The problem when people talk about Portnoy is that they think of him as a drummer when in reality he was one of the main songwriters. He was starting to repeat himself to the point there was nothing to repeat, but some of the best DT songs came from his ideas. THAT'S the part thats irreplaceable.
I miss his backup vocals. He was excellent at that.
I'm really enjoying this...
It's freaking awesome!
anyone know if its possible to get some DT albums without the vocal track.. ?
Chris Thomas Look for multitracks
+Chris Thomas It's called Liquid Tension Experiment.
+Nolan Pettersen yeh, and I love their stuff... there's just not enough of it
+Chris Thomas If you want to spend a lot of money on overpriced isolated tracks, you can get instrumentals of most of their songs on jammit.
Every part of this comment is true.
its weird to watch Mangini playing on such a small kit
I think he is perfect fit for DT and I just love the drums in distance over time (especially pale blue dot). Don't know if he had more freedom now than before.
I think he got the part because he didn’t play to them he played with them
Totally!
Petrucci is playing Carnatic music.
Amazing feeling to improvise! Can be not better timbre, but is very technical and smart, absolutely.
Very professional indeed.
DT is Men from another planet. Amazing! :)
I'd like to be the bass player in DT. Just play whatever since you can't be heard and collect the paycheck.
TheeOneUp Oh, well if Gavin said so..........please. And Portnoy says this, and Weckl says that, and Greb said this and Colaiuta says that...............who cares.
TheeOneUp Fully agreed, :)
TheeOneUp PT FTW!!!!!
Mangini is a Monster!!
