    This is super interesting, I like to see people playing the game for the first time and listen to their takes. As a person who have played the game for a long time you assume everything is second nature, so seeing people learning and getting better little by little is so fun

    Unlike most TCGs, Yugioh cards are themed via archetypes. The game itself is not themed. The cards themselves are. And archetypes are not mutually exclusive so you can mix and match archetypes.
    Also it's funny seeing MTG players misestimate a card's worth out of ignorance.

  • @sampeters5589

    Its simple, just believe in the heart of the cards and have crazier hair than who ever you duel. Also try to stay out of the shadow realm. Yugioh was asked what theme it wanted and answered Yes.

    Even as someone who has played since 2013 I still can’t understand how this is a game for children 6 years+ 😂 There are so many hidden rules and things that don’t work as it seems they should. Trying to learn the game now is like trying to learn a new language and even veteran players struggle to read their cards correctly.
    Good luck Wheels!

      I think it suffers from much the same complexity-creep that most (all?) long-running TCGs get - the core mechanics aren't terribly complicated, but there are so many extra mechanics and so much additional jargon, because you can't go a year without releasing a new mechanic...

      Kids can learn. The key is not learning from these tutorials but by being taught by a person. Learning the basics first and learn other mechanics as you encounter them. The game was simpler when I was younger, but I started playing card games at age 9. Anybody can learn. Just gotta be patient, lose a lot and keep playing.

    yugioh does have sets/archetypes hat share theme or even story arc among its art (recommend to check duel terminal story) but the theme miss-mash & miss-matching within ones deck is actually the charm of yugioh. only in yugioh you can play group of time traveling gentlemmen thief and yet you counter opponent card using japanese ghost before you slam down literal lovecraft horror as you boss. lore wise is disconnected but if you create your own story how this 3 groups cards came together you got your self a weird and cool premise.

    I played ygo for many years, and I do love the game, but for beginners it’s definitely pretty damn impenetrable. Especially I think playing digitally like this often just feels… suffocating because it’s just rules and mechanics aka the unfun parts of learning a tcg without the fun part of being around other people and absorbing their excitement for the game. As for the card art, ygo has a ton of different archetypes w their own consistent aesthetics and your beginner’s deck was definitely just a stapled together deck of a wild mix of different cards😂
    Some notes, hopefully to answers some qs: 36:40 cyclone just destroys a card, it does not negate its effect. So the card was destroyed but it’s effect still activated. This was probably a miss play by your opponent
    48:28 ygo is very picky with timing. By chaining the two traps I believe you missed the timing for one of them.
    54:15 yes! You are correct. But it needs to be set face down on the field for it to work during opponent’s turn. Quick spells can be incredibly powerful and they have the highest spell speed among spell cards.
    I think you did very well for a complete beginner!! But yeah lol casual tcg games and learning sessions are definitely more fun and enlightening with friends.😂

    Ygo isn't THAT hard
    Just learn every rule and mechanic taught in the player rulebook and then go out of your way to learn the secret rules and card rulings.
    Then, throw all of that out of the window because card effects always take priority over the rules
    Have fun y'all

    @Dice Breaker: their is one thing you missunderstood about summoning to the Extra monster zone, only link monster, and pendulum monster that are face-up in the extra deck that are special summoned from the Extra deck will be force into does zone if they are not other link monster that points to a main monster zone, If you used one Extra monster zone your opponent will be able to used the other one, the only time you can used 2 Extra monster zone it is with link monster and if they are extra link all the way to the other Extra monster zone. Because you played your Xyz{spell out Exsssed) monster in your extra monster zone, so when you try to link summoned from the extra deck, since they can only used the Extra monster zone and you could only used one, you would be force to used your Xyz monster as link matterial to clear out that space, and using a link matterial is not considered tributing.

    @Dice Break: The spell card fusion substitude, as a text that says always treated as polymarization, that simply mean if you have 2 polymarization already in your deck you can only have one fusion substitude spell card, and so on. Super polymarization does not equal polymarization. The spell card polymariazation itself is better then the spell card fusion substitude because then you can used fusion material in your hand and not just the field, however as tread off you don't have a spell card effect in the graveyard. When you played you thought you fusion summoned a fusion monster, you special summoned a fusion monster using the effect of the dark ex-sealed fusion that tributed matterial, and since you special summoned a fusion monster and not fusion summoned it, you will not be able to monster reborn it since it was not fusion summoned.

  • @SuperNickid
    @SuperNickid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Dicebreaker: you may know this by now, since your opponent was also a beginer and maybe a magic the gathering player also, the opponent did not know that destroy does not negated in yugioh, so this is why, your quick play spell care still resolve despite your opponent destroy it first. Then your question then why it negated continous card, it does not, for example you activated call of the haunted continuous trap card and you target a monster in your graveyard, your opponent chain mst an target call of the haunted, chain link 2 resolve first and destroy call of the haunted chain link 1 resolve with nothing happening since a continous card is required to remain on the field to resolve its effect, this is not negating an effect, you activated call of the haunted target a monster in the graveyard the opponent does not chain mst and deside to wait, you special summoned the targeted monster, and your opponent decided to play mst in response to the special summoned succefully of your monster card and target call of the haunted, chain link 1 resolve destroying call of the haunted, then the continous effect of call of the haunted applied (if call of the haunted leave the field destroy that monster) so the monster summoned by call of the haunted is destroy, so if destroy equal negated in the situation I just mention because the monster is already summoned call of the haunted would be negated and destroy this will cause the monster summoned by call of the haunted to remain on the field.

    Starting out with the new mechanics in yu-gi-oh is confusing. To be honest, it would be better to start with duel links/speed duels, because it helps new duelists or old duelists of the original mechanics to get back into yu-gi-oh. But believe in the heart of the cards. 😂

  • @Xarphor

    More yugioh please! I'd love to see you traverse through the learning curve.
    Edit: The theme in yugioh is of different dimensions and planets that have fought in wars over time and space coallescing in our reality due to the power of duelists within "shadow games" or duels. The anime doesn't delve too much into it, but the basics are of there being several dimensions, and being able to create and evolve the creatures of different dimensions to use in duels. The solo mode in master duel talks alot about the individual lore of some of the archetypes.

      It's not worth it lmao, people from other card games come from a game where complete virtual decks were built for them already, whereas Yu-Gi-Oh began as a game where you have to build your own deck from scratch by collecting generic booster packs. So when you give one of these players a deck they didn't build themselves they have no clue what to do and can only hide their embarrassment at their lack of game knowledge by dissing on the game.

    Destroy != negate
    Pretty common trap for new players, which means the guy you played for your first duel was probably as new as you are.
    Also raigeki seems really strong (and it used to be a staple to the point of being restricted), but these days the number of counter-spell traps, monsters you can summon/activate from the graveyard, etc means it's actually pretty average. Still a staple in some decks but not meta-defining.

    @Dice Breaker: You activated silver cry as chain link 2, and your opponent activated mst, targeting your silver cry as chain link 3, so mst resolve first destroying sliver cry, silver cry still resolve because it is not a continous type of card. Continous types of card, are continous spell, equipe spell, field spell, Continous trap, and normal trap card that have the condition written in their text that they become equip card. Normal trap that have the conditon to become equiped, if it got 2 effect written on the card, one would be its normal trap effect, and the other one is equiped effect, so if you wait to used both effect at the same time, and your opponent chain MST to destroy this activated card, only the normal trap effect would work, the equipe effect would not work since the trap card still need to exist to equiped to your monster. A mush better exemple scrap iron scarecrow normal trap, you activated it when your opponent declare an attack it target that monster and negated the attack, and regardless if it succesfully negated the attack or not, that normal trap as the condition to return itself face-down on the field to used it again next turn, so if your opponent chain mst and target your activated scrap iron scarcrow, your opponent monster attack is still negated, but because your scrap iron scarcrow is not on the field at resolution it is not return face-down on the field.

    Mtg is as guilty as yugioh on the "not having a theme" stuff. You go from knights, to steampunk, to cyberpunk, to greece, to the mafia, to hogwarts (and don't get me started on the crossovers!). If anything, you have to see the cards in every "archetype" (kinda like tribes from mtg) or the ones that are connected, those then share an archetype.
    For example, the "anime jrpg girl" is from the archetype and storyline "World Legacy", and in that archetype/storyline things are very JRPG like (specially xenoblade 1), and in every archetype inside that storyline, each one follows a theme (mechanical and visual). Krawlers and mechanical bugs with lots of swarming and flip effects, Orcust are mechanical monsters with an orchestra thematic with lots of graveyard effects, Crusadia is an alliance of various tribes with effects that work better when more "crusadia" monsters are on the field, etc.

      Link Summoning is actually really easy. Say I have two cards on the field, let's say, Aromage Jasmine and Aromage Laurel and I want to play Aromaseraphy Jasmine, the Aromage Link Monster. I simply send 2 of my plant monsters on the field to the graveyard as it says so on the card to Summon her. So Jasmine and Laurel are sent to the field and I can place her face up in Attack Position (Link Monsters are incapable of Defense Position or Facedown Position) in either the Main Monster Zone or if one is empty, an Extra Monster Zone. Preferably Extra because due to the Link Arrows pointing toward my cards with potential effects like being immune to battle destruction if my LP are higher or sacrifice to Special Summon any Plant monster from my Deck as I desire.
      But there's more. If I wanted to Summon a Link 3 monster and since Seraphy Jasmine is a Link 2 monster, she can be treated as 2 Link Materials and would only need one other monster on the field to summon the Link 3.

    I've tried returning to the game I really have after having played it in my teens as I'm now in my twenties and I just cannot stand it. As far as I'm aware of the game is completely unbalanced as there are different ways to be killed in multiple different ways that just come off as ridiculous. I'm used to the older style where there is no possible way to be killed both in your hand deck or life points and field by one person or in one turn. I'm used to the turn one exodia decks I've played against those when I was younger they sucked but you had to give props where props were due to them having good luck and a good deck setup. Nowadays I found you can be slaughtered within one turn by somebody that can summon half a million things and take 10 minutes to figure out their turn while having what you could consider a really good deck back then only to just get straight up destroyed because you thought that. And that's not even counting the fact that multiple of them I've seen have plenty of ways to screw you over in negating abilities and their own self protection or just straight up revival. I was feeling the need for a card game after elder scrolls Legends was forcefully screwed over by Bethesda and you know them ceasing all future development.

    I think Yu-Gi-Oh! vs Pokemon vs Magic as card games is interesting because Magic has always been the card game first, Pokemon had a video game first before cards became a thing and the anime, but Yu-Gi-Oh! was the manga first. So I feel like you can tell with how ridiculous it gets with game mechanics nowadays, that the original priority was story and how the cards aid that. It doesn't translate super well into a physical, real world card game, especially against card games that were games first.
    It's really interesting to think about. ...but man, xyz/link/whatever stuff is just so much. I still don't get them.

    • @DovahFett
      @DovahFett 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evidently it does translate well, or the game would not have taken off like it has and lasted this long when so many other TCGs have died out (35 billion cards sold and $10 billion in profits as of 2021). People like to pick on it because of its seemingly nonsensical, unintuitive mechanics and sometimes childish art styles and themes, but it is clearly doing *something* right that other TCGs aren't. It's not like Yu-Gi-Oh! had the popularity of a huge preexisting property to ride on, like the Pokémon TCG. Yes, the original animated series and manga enjoyed some success, but not on the level of a something like Pokémon, which has always printed money because of its mass appeal to younger audiences. Yu-Gi-Oh! has grown and continues to grow simply by being a good game. If it weren't, it would have faded and failed by the mid 2000s. The reasons why it hasn't are worth studying.

    This may be a little bit late and you may already known it by this point.
    Yugioh theme is that there is this galazy called Duel Terminal and the Monsters all exist in this galaxy, some in the same planets/worlds with others and some by their own.
    Take into consideration that this theme was introduced way after the game was created, so is more some kind of excuse to explaind the great range of things you see in the game. From simple fantasy of dragons and mithology to advance tecnological worlds and virtual realitys, and everything between.

      @Morrowinder777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing you said is true. Unlike mtg and others that have big storylines that connect everything together in a single multiverse and all that, yugioh has more disperse stuff, with 3 big storylines, but with loads of smaller ones. The big ones are Duel Terminal, World Legacy and Abyss Storiline, each one in their own separate universe (there's a theory that DT and WL happen in the same world, but it's just a theory).
      But most cards aren't connected or in the same world/universe.

    About five minutes in is when he's explaining a bunch of stuff that to me, is when Yugioh lost it's appeal.
    Once they started to get immensely verbose and complex with the cards it became quite a hassle to grasp.
