- Did you know Kingpin (Marvel) from Spider-Man (Marvel) in “Spider-Man the Animated Series” (Marvel) is kinda fat (DC)? Like he looks like a big boy. A large fella? Hahaha this is just a filler post because I’m still working on a Death Note vid! Wow you read the description so now you now that earlier than everyone else, crazy

Most people assume it's a lie to hide his identity. Even when he was outed they just assumed Matthew Murdock lied and he could really see.
Why would Fisk know? Why would anyone know? It’s not in DD’s interest for anyone to know if only because it would give away his secret identity. Matt Murdock is already a prominent crime fighting attorney who occasionally takes on the Kingpin as part of his day job. It’s best for him to hide in plain sight.

As a kid I genuinely thought the same thing.
He wasn't good at climbing ladders, so he became the boss to hire and make other people climb ladders for him. Perfectly reasonable and even somewhat inspiring.

Kingpin is truly one of the most inspiring fictional characters ever written. He was overweight as a kid, and was even caught by the police because he couldn't climb up a ladder. But today he's the biggest mobster because of the incident.

So really, when the Kingpin starts telling you his backstory, that's actually a death-sentence he's indirectly giving you.
It wasn't even revenge, he respected him as criminal and did as exactly as his dad would (yeah he killed him to hide his previous identity), afterwards he wonders if his own son would plan to take revenge

I love that despite appearances, Kingpin really is basically pure muscle. And anyone who heard him say that without seeing him straight body someone wouldn't believe him. It's what makes the entire conversation so believable

I think that’s more Spidey-esque approach to the situation than just beating the shit out of him. It’s humorous the way it plays out but this is something Spidey would do. Also, in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics Spider-Man talks to Kingpin while Kingpin is eating at a restaurant. At least, I think that’s what happened.

He actually trained in the art of Sumo. He was a fat kid so he learned martial arts from fat martial artists with some Judo on the side for good measure. Don’t underestimate Sumo Wrestlers because of how they look that is also well trained muscle. Fisk could power slam you through the fucking floor if he wanted to.

Yeah, OG Kingpin was actually super strong. And considering plot determines a lot of circumstances, even in the 70s ppl complained how the heel can Spidey survive punches from the Hulk one comic and get pimp slapped by Kingpin another comic.
He trained himself in the art of Sumo to use his weight to his advantage and if you’ve seen a Sumo Wrestler fight that’s like fighting a bear in human form. Just like Kingpin they look fat but a lot of that is well trained muscle.

He failed climbing the ladder as a young lad, now he’s climbed to the top. That’s actually a better story arc than most heroes and villains today.

Now I can't help but wonder if that part of his backstory was a visual metaphor for how he started at the bottom of the ladder, but due to his current position, could not climb up.
Kingpin reconciling with his father is pretty heart-warming, especially since we all know parents find it really hard to admit what they do their kids is wrong in any capacity.
To be far, they could have made Kingpin do some time for the sake of letting his accomplices get away. And jail for prominent mobsters is very cozy.

Just kind of a weird detail to include about a guy who's not supposed to have any super powers. Then again it would make sense if he has a complex about being fat.

The funny thing is a lot of power lifters look fat but are actually a lot more muscled than their appearance suggests. Same is true for sumo wrestlers (though in that case there's a lot of fat too.)

Kingpin tried to follow his father's footsteps but failed, because of his WEIGHT.
After his time in prison, he had acquired the skills to begin building his WEIGHT.
Kingpin became crime lord of New York City, because of his, WEIGHT.

If we go by the first two facts, then a third of the US population has the potential to be the next Kingpin.

In the actual episode he says that it's the time spent in prison that made him a criminal and made him learn the skill necessary to build his empire.
Which is oddly realistic for a comic book villain
Funnily enough, exactly what Spider-Man at first assumes as well. And yeah, he was right! Not a terribly shocking backstory at all.
Also he erased his name from police records. And he also murdered his own father.
As well as a real-life criminal too... criminals tend to become hardened and more criminally in prison
And in the end (at least in this show) his son Is arrested and Kingpin testifies against him

What I love about this is the dialogue of him being all muscle was one of the few moments in the Spider-Man cartoon that I remember. He's grabbing Peter in a bear-hug, and just says something along the lines of "Let me show you what 300lbs of muscle can do!"
A friend of mine got inspired by it - since he was also a local round boy.
While he never dropped the weight and looks round, he can throw a grown man without issues.

There is the fact that a lot of powerlifters/strong men make their belly extra fat to provide a better center of gravity, so they can lift more... However, the downside to that strategy is that belly fat is the most hazardous type of fat in terms of health...

Fun fact - that genuinely IS muscle. The reference to all of Kingpin's 'fat' being muscle in this skit is 100% factual according to the source material. The guy works out and eats well. If not for being a mobster monster he'd be an inspiring take on how we can improve ourselves with diet and exercise - though he might be going a bit too far given just how bulky all that muscle is.

And the thing is, Kingpin being muscular is actually canon and true. He really does have big muscle mass that makes him look fat.

The best part is that in the original 90's cartoon, Kingpin actually has his own father executed simply because he considered him a loose end, same as what his father did to him in his backstory. It wasn't even spite, but simply a matter of eliminating all connections to his past. he didn't harbor any ill intent despite the tragedy of his own parent abandoning him and even grew to become powerful from it.
I love how none of this is exaggerated from Spider-Man TAS. He literally couldn't pull himself up and his dad let him take the fall in court. 😂

I love how Kingpin is so ready to share his life story with Spider Man in such a friendly way, despite the situation he's in. "Tell me where I'm losing you", is just so casual it makes me wonder if Kingpin is going to offer Spider Man a cup of coffee next.
Kingpin saying "Well I've never heard anything like this from Daredevil" feels like a comment on how the Daredevil series made Wilson Fisk a character with a tragic background that grew up to become the menacing leader of a major crime syndicate, whereas the cartoon explanation is more like "Oh, aren't you a chonky boi? Wait, how are you able to crush my spine without gasping from the exertion?!"
Kingpin's past, his father was always a criminal, but not a successful one. He dragged his son to the life of crime. When Fisk became the kingpin and reunited with his now old father.
His father saw what his son became and finally accept him, but Kingpin tells him that his son cease to exist when he left him in prison. Kingpin ordered his men to kill him. His father was horrified and begged for mercy, but he was murdered for betraying his own son.
Kingpin really wanted to show his father that he became what his father couldn't. His father would never be part of his son's criminal empire.
Kingpin's son Richard went to jail and Kingpin used his father's lessons to sacrifice his son. His son went to prison.
I remember at the end, Kingpin look at the picture of his family. He's all alone and all he has left now is his empire. He became worse than his father. He said how long he has to wait till his son exact his revenge. Kingpin now knows what awaits him at the end.

There's a bit more to Kingpin's backstory than that.
As a child, Wilson Fisk was bullied at school for being fat. He started working out to get stronger and stand up for himself. Fisk eventually teamed up with his former bullies to form a gang.
He was recruited by crime boss Don Rigoletto as his bodyguard and eventually became his right hand man. But then, Fisk betrayed Rigoletto and killed him. He took over his organization and eventually became the most powerful crime boss in New York City.
That's when everyone started calling him the Kingpin.

The interaction between them is perfect. The script is funny but it's the voice acting and comedic timing that sells it.

To give kingpin credit, his bulk is ferocious. Man is so strong he can 1v1 Spiderman and Dr. Doom, and not instantly die, AS A REGULAR GUY. NO POWERS OR NOTHING, JUST BULK

How can spiderman not understand Kingpin’s backstory? Not being able to climb a ladder is perfectly synchronous with running all crime in NYC. One of the best written villains ever. I think Solid JJ is just salty he can’t write great stories like Kingpin’s backstory

This just reminds me of how amazing the music of the 90s cartoon was. It gave the show this epic epic feel to it. And I remember this episode haha
Kingpin is fat, but I don't think that's his whole gimmick, it's just a design element that's remained consistent throughout all his iterations. And in some cases if a writer can't fit him into a Spider-Man or Daredevil story, Tombstone will do in a pinch.

Also when I saw the thumbnail I couldn't help but hear this kingpin's voice from the show. Roscoe Lee Browne was the BEST kingpin voice I've heard yet, though Michael Clarke Duncan was pretty cool too.

I remember that in one of Kingpin's first appearances as a Spider-Man villain, during the 60's, it was mentioned that he used to hire bodybuilders and martial artists to spar with him, and he'd always leave them crippled for life. Now I was a child reading this in Marvel Tales, but even then, it occurred to me to wonder how he was still finding guys who would take his money and work as sparring partners for him.
He couldn’t climb a ladder as a kid, so he climb the ladder to make other people climb ladders for him.
