even at the end mattie doesnt get closure as we see in her delirious state when she sees cheny's figure running away. she is forever chasing him, never seeking closure even in his death. and seeking revenge, the moment she pulls that trigger it pushes her to losing her arm and becoming a bitter old woman. maybe she wouldve gotten closure if she met rooster but even that is taken from her.

If you want to watch a great modern western, I recommend watching '3:10 to Yuma', starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe and directed by James Mangold (director of Logan, Ford v Ferrari and the upcoming Indiana Jones 5).
The 'Magnificent Seven' remake with Denzel Washington is also pretty good (altough that movie it's much more action oriented than 3:10 to Yuma).

One of the very rare occasions when the first and second versions are both very good.
John Wayne and Jeff Bridges are both quality. Judge Parker was a historical figure known as "the hangin' judge." The Marshalls that he sent out into Outlaw Territory were often alone and against the worst. They had True Grit.

And it was really that great Elmer Bernstein musical score that made the original movie so memorable, anyway. I mean how can you dare to call it magnifcent without that original score.
On another subject, I highly recommend you guys take a look at the movie Promising Young Woman. You might be turned off by the title thinking its just a romcom or a silly chick flick and the storyline is definitely written from the female perspective. I've seen this and the 1969 version, and for me, it's like when people go to the Ashland Shakespeare Festival to see different actors giving uniquely different performances of the same characters in the same stories year after year. John Wayne and Jeff Bridges are both terrific Rooster Cogburns, but they give him very different personalities. Wayne's Rooster was roguish and jovial while Bridges' Rooster was more dark and angry/bitter. I thought Bridges' performance was more layered, but Wayne's was more fun. As LaBeouf, singer Glenn Campbell's acting was noticeably stiff, and Matt Damon gave a more natural performance. As Addie, Kim Darby was good, but Hailee Steinfeld was exceptional. Between the two versions, I think the original is more of a crowd pleaser.
BTW George Lucas' first concept for Star Wars was about a young girl who hires a grizzled war veteran to help her in her quest to avenge the murder of her father. I can't remember if George Lucas ever said that he drew inspiration from True Grit, but the comparison has been made in "the making of" articles.

In more than 8,500 of these cases, the defendant either pleaded guilty or was convicted at trial.[2] Parker sentenced 160 people to death; 79 were executed.,,,,The old gallows was used from Parker's appointment in 1875 until a new gallows was constructed in 1886. Up to twelve men could be executed simultaneously on the new gallows, although six was the most ever executed at once. (but with added humor and flourish). ballad of buster scruggs is further evidence of this. even no country for old men has wonderful western elements. i wish more people would react to their version of True Grit

Love this movie, better than the original. There were some things that were better in the original, but very few, most notably the depiction of Lucky Ned Pepper. He's good in this remake but you can't beat Robert Duvall. LOL Ned Pepper was so fascinating and I wish he was the one to get a spinoff movie, not Rooster Cogburn.

Joel and Ethan are brilliant. Also, the wild west wasn't as wild as reported. Duels in the street almost never happened. It also only lasted approximately fifteen years. By the twentieth century law and order were being put in to place.

Great movie! Good god, it's a great movie! Couple quick thoughts, though I'm very late to the dance.
The writing in this movie is absolutely transcendent. The back-and-forth between the horse-trader and Mattie is a work of art. The conversation with Forrester (the guy in the bear suit) is a string of words which may have never have been placed one after another in just such a way. Jaw-dropping.
You mention the "wild west" and the frontier... keep in mind the line for where that frontier starts has moved over the decades. This movie takes place mostly (entirely?) in Arkansas territory... hardly what we now think of as the "wild west". (Not saying you're wrong in calling it "wild west" or "frontier"... just sayin' this movie is about a time when "west" just wasn't that far west).
Anyway, I had great fun watching with you guys. Thanks!

Great reaction guys. But you really should see the 1969 version with John Wayne, who won an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance. It is not a Coen Bros movie, so it is way less dark, and the comedic relief lines are actually funny. It also has a great supporting cast, including Robert Duval and Dennis Hopper. Seriously, I realize that seeing two versions of the same movie is practically unheard of in "reactions" world, but do it anyway. Yu will not regret it.

I love this movie, it's probably one of my favorites. I can't think of a single thing I don't like about it.
If you're looking for more modern Westerns, I recommend The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, with Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. The acting is superb, the cinematography is phenomenal, and it's just so moody and compelling. It is a slow-moving, long and meditative movie, so be wary of that. I'm a big fan.

This remake is good, but the original (imo) is where it's at! The actress is this one is good at trying to mimic the original and I wouldn't try to take that from her. The original actress is way more believable when it comes to her forcefulness that things will be done a certain way. Just my opinion. I own both versions and love them both.

Really have enjoyed several of your reactions, guys! Glad you’re getting some interested in Western flicks, & while I’m pretty sure Tombstone has been recommended (I recommend the Director’s Cut.), but I should also like to recommend a few-o-my faves to ya! First... A fun “Hollywood Western” (Not based in any “authenticity”.), “Silverado”! Great cast & story! Next, “The Red-Headed Stranger”. (Kinda hard to find, but definitely well worth the effort! Starring Willie Nelson, Morgan Fairchild Royal Dano, & (My favorite) R.G. Armstrong. It is based on his storytelling album of the same title.) “Appaloosa” is another good choice. (With Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen & Jeremy Irons co-starring, it’s a bit slow, but overall, quite satisfying. Lastly, “Open Range”. Costner stars in, & directs this good looking & well made flick!

Check out Silverado. That’s a fun, yet compelling western. 3-10 to Yuma is also good, but the new one is rated R. But it is a good movie, like this one. If you don’t mind older ones, consider The Undefeated or The Shootist or Big Jake. Also, the older Alamo movie with John Wayne is good, but maybe not exactly a western.

Another more modern western is Open Range with Kevin Costner (2003) Classic westerns with John Wayne (Directed by John Ford) are always great. For a lighter western try City Slickers with. Billy Crystal and Jack Palance (1991) Can't wait to see which film style you do next.

I grew up watching my dad watch westerns as he was a boy in the early 60's and John Wayne was God. So naturally I only old watch Wayne westerns. Working on an entire VHS collection of every Western he was in and I'm probably half to a little over half complete. True Grit the '69 OG is amongst my movie MOVIES ever. So I did not want this coming out and was expecting the worst. Every single thing about it was tailor made for epic remake awfulness. Wayne IS Rooster Cogburn, Kim Darby is the baddest shit talker in the history of cinema and the human language and Glen Cambell was a delightful asshat. So well written. The score. The camerawork. She is probably my favorite female movie character ever and is have an big crush on Kim Darby and thought she was the only person ever born to be able to play Mattie Ross and fully anticipated utter shit. A first time role going to a kid singer? Yet Hailee Steinfeld absolutely smashed it out of the park in one of the best performances in film history because she swung the biggest bat and outshone a cast full of straight killers. She somehow vaunted herself from what had every indication of being a stain on film history into Mattie Ross- 1a Darby 1b Steinfeld. She should have gotten best Supporting Actress that year, total screw job.
Same movie but less "grimy modern reboot" and more down home popcorn fun. I like this ending as it's faithful to the book, but I enjoy the ending on the first movie better. Won't spoil it, but felt the characters ended up working better and more naturally.

I really like this movie so you did. At first I thought that Rooster Cogburn was almost a caricature but eventually he grew on me. He is very different than John Wayne but endearing. The character of Maddy was, I think, far superior to the original actress. Her story is much more fleshed out. I think that Glenn Campbell beats out Matt Damon. The stories are almost the same. How about “Argo”?
