She didn't only have one bullet: she fell in the water and got the gunpowder wet in the antique pistol she was using (it didn't use cartridges, so if the cylinder chambers get wet, it won't fire).

🤠👍 In the 1969 version of this, the age of Mattie Ross was moved up from 14 to 16 and the actress who played her (Kim Darby) was actually 20. While this version might be more faithful to the book, the original has a much much more memorable musical score (by the late great Elmer Bernstein). 😉

The horse was dead on its feet---it had been ridden well past its ability to recover--stabbing it initiated the panic/prey response so that it could keep going even though it was exhausted-- the gurgling and foaming and panting at the end would tend to indicate either cardiac arrest or asphyxiation due to hyperventilation. Rooster shot it because it was just going to lay there and slowly die; believe it or not, it was done out of mercy.

The reason why Texas Rangers during this time don't like large fires is because the majority of what they did was track and hunt down the worst criminals in Texas and Indian raiding parties. So the Rangers came up with what they called cold camp.

It's a crime Steinfeld didn't win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress because it is a straight up miracle that someone could even come close to Kim Darby's Maddie Ross. And in her debut role? Blowing those kinds of legends out of the water his her performance when they're having good days? The 1969 is my favorite John Wayne western and I fell head over heels for her instantly because she was the greatest shit talker to ever bandy words (and let's be honest, smokin). It's a miracle this movie was as good as it was because this especailly shouldn't have ever been made again, but they did it. I like the original story better (this has stuff like the medicine man and hanging man added and a different ending) although I enjoy this one as well.

Then he made a sequel, called Rooster Cogburn. Really good, with a truly great actress...Katharine Hepburn, as co-star. Unlike Rooster, my spelling isn't off, at least not in her name. 9:39 into watching this and I'm predicting her complete meltdown with tears and ol'Blacky's demise.
For what it's worth the dialog bmbetween her and the stablemaster is some of the best acted dialog you'll come across in film. It's not as flowery as Eowyn and Grima's in LOTR and the Two Towers. But it is still a thing of beauty to behold. Hailee really made this role her own and demonstrated some significant acting chops while doing so.
    I've respected her ever since.
I don't think she saw Rooster stabbing the horse to keep it running... huh, well I expected her to meltdown.

A great cast. Jeff Bridges is great in any role he is in. One film I recommend him in is the 2003 biopic "Seabiscuit" a true story about the famous racehorse and his Jockey, Red Pollard from the 1930s. Based on the novel by Laura Hillenbrand. Jeff Bridges stars with Tobey Maguire, Chris Cooper and Elizabeth Banks. Also, One Notable actor Josh Brolin, (Tom Chaney)is another great actor. His father is Actor James Brolin from The Amityville Horror film from 1979. His stepmother is Actress and Singer Barbara Streisand. I recommend for him, "The Goonies" a great adventure film from 1985 with a great front loaded cast. He plays the oldest Goonie, Brand. He stars alongside Sean Astin, Academy Award Winner, Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman and many more. Finally, He is fantastic as Former President George W. Bush in the 2008 Oliver Stone Biopic on the Former President titled "W". He stars with another great frontloaded cast including Richard Dreyfuss, James Cromwell and Elizabeth Banks. A great Eye Opener of a film, highly recommended. Great reaction!

    Good stuff!
This film remake is much closer to the novel than the first. The book was entirely narrated by Mattie, as is this movie. The second thing going for the movie is being made by the Coen brothers. This film, and No Country for Old Men, are two of theirs in which they stay very true to the source material, rather than creating their own version of another's tale, as they usually do
So you end up with an excellent story teller, excellent film makers, an exceptional cast, and a very good film.
    Nice reaction..
For a little different, yet arguably satirical, but accurate, movie, you could check out 1970's "Little Big Man" sad, funny, and great acting, including my favorite Native American actor, Chief Dan George. He can also be found doing a great role in the Clint Eastwood film "The Outlaw Josey Wales", another good film.

Mattie Ross really was made of steel, wasn't she? Hailee Steinfeld did such a good job in the role.
The two men whom Mattie talked to at the wild west show at the end of the film were Cole Younger and Frank James. They were actual outlaws, members of the James gang, whose best-known member was Jesse James. Cole and Frank actually did have a wild west show for a while, starting in 1903.
The Coen Brothers directed this version of True Grit. Some other Coen Brothers movies you might want to react to:
    The Big Lebowski
    Fargo
    No Country for Old Men
    O Brother, Where Art Thou?
    Raising Arizona
Each is an excellent film, ranging from comedy to serious drama. No Country for Old Men is considered by many to be a modern western, so it would fit your theme.

Jeff Bridges is great in "The Big Lebowski" if you'd like to see more of him. "Dances With Wolves" the best set in that period. Oscar winning film. I'd watch the directors edit, adds a bit more context to a few scenes. And adds a just stunningly beautiful scene as well.
