@@NerdoftheRings The meanings here are completly different as you have shown. I do not believe that this is done in spite of the staewards as if the the filmmakers had an effective dislike for everyone of them, but felt the need to change it to fit the setting and narration.
We have to keep in mind, that the time frame of Lord of the Rings is extremly unwieldly for a movie or serial production as it can seem especially disruptive to the story. I believe this was changed, because it had make sense why Gondor and the Realm of Men was in such general disarray and so heavily hit by Sauron during the War of the Ring. Would this statement like you pointed it out be brought in the movie, it would make people scratch their head as to why this situation arose in the first place.
It also fits better into the feeling for the audience that the past, what..., ~200 years were bad while also aknowledging the timeframe of the movie. One has to keep in mind, that events in the books and general lore move slower by several magnitudes. The stewards get thown under the bus, but the movie has an enjoyable pacing. Pick one.
Thorongil's story puts a very different context behind Aragorn interacting with Denethor's eldest son in the Fellowship, and not being in a personal hurry to return to Minas Tirith.

It's so interesting how Rohan came to be, love that oath that is sworn at its creation. I'm guessing the beacons between Rohan and Gondor would have been built around this time as well.
It says the beacons existed much earlier actually! (I'll cover this in Part 3 when they come into the story)
Aragorn referring to his time here as Thorongor in Minas Tirith when he's speaking to Boromir in Lorien is really cool

So Theoden's great grandfather battled Haradrim with war elephants. I assumed the Rohirrim were just brave and inventive, but they may have already had tactics when they met again at Pelennor Fields.
I have completely forgotten how the Rohirrim stopped the Haradrim from entering Minas Tirith. Read the book probably 2-3 years ago. Was it similar to the film depiction?

@@pattonramming1988 do you really need to be that precise when your target is an elephant? Remember, you need not have to kill the elephant outright. Just have to neutralize its combat effectiveness.
Corsairs of Umbar is a great threat to Gondor.
If we were to get another animated LOTR film down the line, I’d totally be down for it to be something relating to Gondor.

Something I just realized now… I wonder if Denethor perceiving favoritism of his father towards Aragorn/Thorongil somehow created his own favoritism of Boromir over Faramir.

It could also be that Denethor would be resentful of any advice Thorongil gave to his father, such as trusting Gandalf, so when Faramir showed preference for Gandalf, he became resentful of Faramir as well, scornfully calling him “wizard’s pupil”.
I love all your videos, but these in particular because they focus not just on one character but on the broader history of an entire realm. Will you do a similar one about Rohan in the future? :)

A TV series IMO
One of the most alluring things about the story of Gondor and Arnor are the post-breakup micro kingdoms of Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur. The idea that there were Dunedaín / Westron kingdoms distinct from any that we see in LoTR, presumably with cultures and styles of their own, is fascinating. It poses questions about the actual size of these geographic areas and, what their populations must have been, what size of armies they could field, and what monuments they made to give themselves an identity in the brief time they had before their collapse.
And on top of all of that, the fact that as strange and unknown as Arthedain might have been, the Shire itself and the lands around it through which the Hobbits and Strider travel for the first chunk of the journey are all the ruined lands of these extinct kingdoms. Somewhere in their journey to Rivendell they might have passed the ruined capital city of a long-ago kingdom, where Aragorn's ancestors once sat enthroned.
Annuminas and Fornost, the capitals of Arnor, were both north of the Shire, as well as the path Aragorn led the hobbits on to Rivendell, so the only structures the Dunedain had left within sight of that path were the ruins of the forts on the Weather Hills and the remains of the watchtower of Amin Sul on Weathertop.
@@tomlienert882 that's true (I suppose I could have looked on a map 😅). Still it's enchanting to imagine children growing up in and around the Shire knowing they can hike out to the ruins of a great medieval-style city where long-dead kings once sat. LoTR doesn't seem to go into a lot of detail about how much of the history of their region folks living in Eriador would be taught (i.e. did Bilbo go to school as a child, or is every child only as educated as their parents' personal library allows?). If you were a Dunlending child, or a descendent of an Arthedain peasant farmer who had remained in spite of the depopulation (Gandalf references a mannish farmer who he used to know in the Hobbit who got eaten by the three trolls), what would you really know about the old kingdoms that used to rule your area?
Arnor always had a smaller population and fewer Dunedaín than Gondor did even if Arnor was where High King Elendil ruled from. Indeed, after Arnor split into three, Rhudaur had so few Dunedaín in it that they were overthrown by the Hillmen, evil men who were allied with Angmar. There's plenty of maps online that show the borders of the three successor kingdoms.
@@MrARock001 in the book, that area is referred to by the Bree-folk as “Deadman’s Dike” and viewed as being haunted-probably because of the Witch-king having sent wraiths to occupy the Barrow Downs east of the Shire.
@@istari0 thanks! That reminds me that I also enjoy how the further away from the main story (as relevant to the plot of LoTR) that we get, the less nuance there is in the affairs of history. The "hillmen" are just uniformly evil men working with Angmar, rather than anything complex, like aggrieved Westrons unhappy with Númenorean rule.

I was hesitant about a long history series of Gondor. Was there much more to learn? Despite having heard much of the details, putting it all together as you have done so has been richly enjoyable! This weeks discussion of the pledges between the new Rohan and Gondor was told magnificently, bringing about deep love for this alliance that was already there but based now in greater details of its emergence.
I now eagerly await Part 3!

Nicely done. Have to admit it, no one stepping forth to claim the crown and allowing the Stewards to rule is why there was a Gondor for Aragorn to rule.

This three-parter was amazing, and your appreciation for all the artwork you can find to paint these videos with interesting visuals is always a delight.
Yet I remain ignorant about Southwest Gondor. We have the river "Morthond", we have the knowledge that the army of the dead crossed these lands and that the Corsairs assailed these shores, and that humans climbed (also) from the South to kill the invading orc populations. But I don't think I ever got any information about what exists in these regions. Is it depopulated? Mostly rural? Are there any relevant kingdoms or events happening South of the Nimrais?
So movies are actually all over the place with their timeline, characters, stories. This clears a lot of compressed time line from the movies.

While a part of me is glad Middle Earth hasn't been mined for all it's worth in adaptations, I would absolutly LOVE a faithful series about the line of Stewards. Tolkiens writing is so beautiful I can vividly see the oath between Gondor and Rohan in my mind and it would be amazing to see that brought to a screen with a beautiful soundtrack playing as the sun sets.
That is a challenge. There are so many stewards and some of them lived a long life. You would have to make a drama series or a documentary.

Even though I know this history well, it's still moving in the telling. It's also one of the many reasons why the Lord of the Rings is such a moving tale. Tolkien gave years of his life building a history for just four novels he published.
I haven't read over it in an age but I got giddy when you mentioned Thorongil. I was like, "why do I remember that name so vividly?" Lol. Then it hit me! Ha ha ha.

This is a great series on a lesser known subject...at least to me... I mean instead of Gondor coming into different stories, here we can learn about the history of Gondor in chronological order. The period around the forming of Rohan is a personal favourite.. also, interesting to note that most of the stewards did a great job

Am I wrong?? I had believed that the Uruk-Hai were not bred by Sauron but by Saruman who, by breeding men with orcs, came up with a race of orcs that could withstand the light of the sun
In the appendix of the LOTR, it states that the Uruk-Hai were created by Sauron in the year 2475 of the Third Age.

This might be more of a fan fiction idea, but what if King Earnur was never killed, but held prisoner by the Witch King, and cursed to live and see the suffering of his people through a Palantír, and only allowed to die if he sits on the throne again...
Why would they do such a thing? They probably tortured him and tried to get as much information out of him as possible. And then they, with most certainty, just killed him, when there was nothing else to gain from him.

Aragorn is a direct descendant of Isildur. Anarion was Isildur's brother. Even though the line of kings failed in Gondor, the last king of Gondor had a daughter, Fíriel, but Gondor's laws did not allow for a ruling queen. However her marriage to the last king of Arthedain merged the lines of Isildur and Anarion so Aragorn is a direct descendant of Anarion as well.

In online discussions, many Tolkien fans have entertained the idea that Gondor is comparable to the Byzantine Empire. J.R.R. Tolkien describe Minas Tirith in a long letter to Milton Waldman, that was probably written in late 1951, as the "half-ruinous Byzantine City of Minas Tirith" and that of Gondor in its history "fades slowly to decayed Middle-Age, a kind of proud, venerable, but increasingly impotent Byzantium.

Taking the works of Tolkien, I would like to introduce a what if that came my way from some old role playing acquaintences. The Great Plague of 1636 of the Third Age. This plague was terrible in Gondor, and reached many parts of Eriador. Using the Great Plague, it was decided that the potency of this plague increased and did more damaga than Tolkien's writings. The problem with biological weapons, once released it mutates beyond all measures. From this line of reasoning came the following. Within Gondor, two thirds the population perished. However, people tend to panic and seek shelter anywhere. Thus, supposed survivors spread south & east. With a little game theory testing only 10% of men in these regions survived the plague. Another consequence was that with so few of the race of Men surviving, what was the point of having them as allies? Orcs & Trolls were far more pliable. So, that concludes my what if.
