  • Hi, in this video I answer the questions on how I raise Gardneri Killifish. I run through the various options I have tried and first food.

For the application of methylene blue, if you place a pin hole in it before removing the foil cap, it will act as a dropper. It's really convenient because you can find a lot of references to adding drops per gallon of water. Plus, no mess!

Thank you for your video, the method you use of taking the eggs from the mop to a container with water and methylene blue, is it specifically for the kiili Fundulopanchax gardneri? And how long do they take to hatch?

Hi, the method can be used for any of the mop spawning kili fish.

Nice comparison. I too have tried the water incubation method and never had much luck. I just let them breed in the tank and whoever survived, that was it. But in order to really get some mass hatching, the best I've found is to use the paper towel method. This is to use a container with a lid and use a portion of paper towel so that it is folded about 3 layers deep. Usually people have used dechlorinated water or tank water. But I found the eggs fungus too much. I recently came across a suggestion to use rooibos tea to wet the paper towel. The tea has natural tannins and natural anti-fungal properties. It works.
Also, the common assumption to always use brine shrimp should be challenged. It is such a pain to have to hatch them and strain them. The perfect foods are microworms and vinegar eels. Both foods don't die in fresh water and allow the fry to eat constantly when they want during the day.

Thanks J, very good comments and agree with the rooibos :-)

Are you only using the paper towel/tea to keep them moist while they develop? Or are you filling the container full with tea and paper towel at the bottom? I only ask because I had to store my eggs in peat for 2-3 months until they were ready to hatch. I'm wondering if moist tea-soaked paper towels is another method.
Peat is a natural anti-fungal as well. After 3 months of storing eggs in moist peat, I had a near 100% hatch rate after adding the mix to dechlorinated water, methylene blue, and adding an air stone. All of the hatching was within 12-24 hours.
