I think they’re saying that we blame atrocities on the devil and evil … but he said we are to blame. People did all the horrible things he listed - they wouldn’t have happened if people hadn’t perpetrated them. We can’t use the excuse of “the devil made me do it” and remove our guilt. At the end of the song, he says “I’ll tell you one thing, you are to blame”.

    • @sadashak4

I agree completely. His point is don’t blame “the devil “for the crap that humans do. The obvious correlation is when humans do good, we do it also because we are humans, not because of some supernatural authority from the benevolent theme park in the sky.

The end is mostly the devil putting the blame on you, instead of "we both did it", which is confusing, which is the nature of the game.

If you (have) read the Bible you should know Jesus had many moments of doubt and pain.
This song is about Lucifer a.k.a. Satan or the Devil and it tells us we should not blame some (made up) dark entity for the crimes we commit ourselves. The song also requires some historical knowledge, like as Mick Jagger sings about Pilates, the Blietzkrieg (World War 2) and the Russian Revolution; ‘‘hanged around in St.Petersburg when I saw it was time for a change, killed the Czar and his ministers, Anastasia (daughter of the Czar who was killed with the Czars family) screamed in vain’’. So it's a reflection for human kind, God and the devil only excist if we allow them to.

"Sympathy for the Devil" is simply the most honest "Christian" song written in the past 75 years. Let me explain... The Stones do a good job of describing the "game" of Satan. If you don't know Christ had doubt reconsider that he prayed so hard he sweat blood. That is doubt turned up to 11. We have all endured things we must go through and to do it blindly or without caution is simply ignoring the truth of the situation. Christ knew what lay ahead but he begged his father for another way, he doubted in essence the plan ahead. If you have a working knowledge of history you'll recognize The Devil's handiwork in world events that is so masterfully laid out. But, Satan keeps repeating "what confuses you is the nature of my game" Which is why I say it is the most honest Christian song in decades. We sing Hymns and Praise Music with little regards for the evil that lies ahead, and then when we fall for the trap of The Devil we seemed shocked. What The Rolling Stones is trying to convey is throughout history Satan is always ready to lie, deceive, tempt, etc everyone including Jesus Christ. But, in the end he helped Pilot wash his hands. So, when you go out in the world keep in mind you will meet evil and have some courtesy because he is willing to steal your soul and faith

    • @HGSolberg

I disagree. What he's actually saying is that the devil is within us. WE are the devil. We as humans are doing all evil, and we shouldn't blame the devil. WE are to blame, no one else, but we created the devil as some sort of cop out. The devil's ultimate trick is that he's us. WE are the devil, but we don't realize it. That's the message of the song.

    Enjoyed your reaction.
Doubt and pain. The scene of Jesus in Gethsemane sure looks like doubt and pain to me, followed by acceptance and calm resolve. A truly human moment, very dramatic. The gospel of Luke even has Jesus sweating blood.
Recommend for your enjoyment or for reaction, the song Gethsemane from the 1970 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. Ian Gillian, vocalist for Deep Purple, does the original broadway version and Ted Nealy does another rendition for the movie. Both are excellent.

  • @asddsa-uy9ko
    @asddsa-uy9ko 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    1. The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ
    Lyrics:
"I was around when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain."
    Meaning:
This line refers to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The "moment of doubt and pain" alludes to Jesus' suffering and anguish before his death, particularly in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Devil implies that he was present during this event, possibly influencing it or taking pleasure in the pain and doubt Jesus experienced.
    2. The Russian Revolution and the Execution of the Romanovs
    Lyrics:
"I stuck around St. Petersburg when I saw it was a time for a change.
Killed the czar and his ministers, Anastasia screamed in vain."
    Meaning:
This verse points to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, including his daughter Anastasia, by the Bolsheviks. The Devil claims to have witnessed or even instigated this violent change, emphasizing the chaos and tragedy of the event.
    3. World War II and Nazi Germany
    Lyrics:
"I rode a tank, held a general's rank when the Blitzkrieg raged and the bodies stank."
    Meaning:
This line references World War II and the Blitzkrieg strategy used by Nazi Germany to swiftly invade countries. The Devil describes himself as a military leader participating in the carnage, highlighting the widespread destruction, death, and suffering caused by the war.
    4. The Assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy
    Lyrics:
"I shouted out, 'Who killed the Kennedys?' When after all it was you and me."
    Meaning:
This part refers to the assassinations of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and his brother Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. The Devil shifts the blame not only to himself but also to humanity, suggesting that evil acts often arise from collective actions and societal conditions rather than a single individual.
    Overall Theme
The song presents evil not as an external force but as an intrinsic part of human nature. By speaking through the Devil’s perspective, it challenges listeners to confront humanity’s complicity in historical tragedies and atrocities. The Devil’s polished and charismatic persona underscores the seductive nature of evil and how easily it can infiltrate society.
This lyrical exploration of history and morality makes "Sympathy for the Devil" one of the most thought-provoking songs in rock music history.

If you listen closely to these lyrics, you may come to realize that this song is NOT about the Devil.
This part here reveals the truth behind the message.
"Just as every cop is a Criminal
    And all the sinners Saints
    As heads is tails"
    [THESE ARE OBVIOUSLY CONTRADICTIONS]
    "Just call me Lucifer"
    [SO IS THIS]
If a cop is to a criminal, as a sinner is to a saint, and as heads is to tails, then it follows that Lucifer is to "God".
    Hope you guess my name!
The protagonist he's describing in this song is God, not the Devil.
"So if you meet me (God)
    have some Courtesy
    have some Sympathy
    and some Taste"
    Ingenious lyrics.

I've never been into the Stones. I think they are highly overrated. They really aren't worthy of the brilliant Americans they were influenced by. The Stones are 5 iterations away blues/rock for the London/New York/L.A. "tastes" out there. Probably would have never made it without the "bad boy" antics of the 60s....showmanship over talent and song writing ability. I like about 5 of their songs only. This is one of them (Angie is another one.) They should have listened more to what their mates, The Beatles, did. They honored the music they listened to and loved from America much better than the Stones. Now, Led Zeppelin....that's a band that had skills when doing southern/American blues.
