Dylan paints such a vivid picture on this song and the anger he feels comes through with every line. Truly remarkable piece of songwriting and musical performance by everyone involved. I’d say Hurricane was responsible for waking me up to social injustice when I first heard it as a teenager back in the 70s. The power of music to change lives is incredible.
The voice that broke down all barriers; the voice of freedom; that declared I'm here and you'll have to recognize that I matter. He's still here, over 80, but Forever Young, still active. I just can't imagine a world without Bob Dylan .....
You nailed it, but that's the thing, Dylan, like Croce was first and foremost a storyteller, and like the commenter below said, a poet. No doubt his unique voice was a huge part of his Mystique.
He has an unconventional voice, and Jimi Hendrix got the confidence to sing from the fact that Dylan was able to do it. Hendrix does a great cover of Dylan's song "All Along the Watchtower"
He was giving the noble price for is writing. You should listen to. "Its Alright Mo" "Desolation Row" "Ballad of A Thin Man" A few remarkable songs that are equivalent to possible a little more abstract than like a rolling stone. I refer to Dylan as the Picasso, Salvador Dali of music. Excellent analysis and summary of the song. I personally equate it with people in general, but yes a woman as for taking her diamond ring and pawn it. It is a harmonica, but in the music world we call it a" Harp" short form. One if the three instruments i play.
Bob Dylan got the Nobel prize for literature! So yes all his songs are great! And I love the way he sings/ talks his songs! Been listening to him for 50 years now ! Loved your reaction to this song!
This is my favorite Bob Dylan song, and consider it a timeless classic. It tells a great story, has amazing lyrics that rhyme perfectly, a nice melody, and the vocals and instrumentation are perfect for the song. In my opinion, Bob Dylan has a very good voice and tone for his songs. His intonation is fabulous, and help make his songs so great. The instrument you were referring to is a harmonica, and it is very common in rock songs from the 60's, and 70's. Great choice of song, and I hope you react to more Bob Dylan songs.
I really love the way he writes his songs, great storytelling in them, love that Harmonica it sounds so good and I’ll definitely be checking out more, thank you for watching and leaving this comment. Have a great weekend ahead 🙏☺️
One of his best songs! Thanks for not pausing it. Most of my generation first heard new songs on the radio and didn't have the luxury of pausing or rewinding. Other Dylan songs I recommend: "Rainy Day Women", "Lay Lady Lay", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", "Tangled Up in Blue" and "Tweeter and the Monkeyman" with The Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne (of ELO) and Tom Petty).
You did an amazing job grasping the essence of this truly historic song. It changed popular music forever. Now, imagine hearing this in a live performance by Dylan at the Hollywood Bowl in 1965! Anyway, great reaction video! I felt like I was hearing this song through your ears for the first time…again. Thank you from an old man living in the small town (Duluth, Minnesota) where Bob Dylan was born.
Thank you for the beautiful comment, i am glad you like it too. Daylan is an amazing song writer and singer , I shall be checking out more from him, feel free to leave your suggestions too. Thanks again.🙏☺️
This song was a "game changer" as much as any song in the history of pop music. Bob Dylan had already established himself as a brilliant songwriter and an important voice within the culture. But nothing that came before SOUNDED like this.
I dig you're into real lyrics and music, you get the vibe, subscribed! Bob Dylan inspired a lot of Rock musicians, he's a Titan of Rock music. I would love to see you react to an Irish band, U2. U2's "I still haven't found what i'm looking for", "with or without you" are known around the world. U2 is another Titan of Rock music.
The ultimate dis song ever written. And there was a song written about him from an old girlfriend, joan baez “diamonds and rust” which was a huge hit for her, dissing bob dylan😮
Regardless, Diamonds and Rust was a great album for Baez and her first big hit since her cover of The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". Maybe some thought it was a diss because it was near the same time as Dylan's Blood On the Tracks. I remember my favorite radio station played both "Diamonds and Rust" and "Tangled Up in Blue" around 1975-76.
Like a strolling gnome. Haha glad you really appreciate it. Such a classic song. I can play it on guitar with the harmonica in the holder. When I learned to play that, it felt more fun than any other song 💥🎸🎤
If I recall right, a musician working on this tune said that after he heard the song, he thought about the intro, saying "The drums sounds like the a judges, history has been called into court, the new time is here". I'm ofc paraphrasing here.
Perhaps you would like " Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. Especially a cover done by Joan Baez. Both the original and the cover are pretty awesome. God's Blessings to you. 😊 ❤
Dylan was the greatest songwriter of his generation, who won the Nobel prize for literature for his poetic lyrics in hundreds of stunning songs. When you get a chance, check out one of his greatest-----Desolation Row (audio version).
Lovely reaction. You can’t go wrong with the Poet. Might as well do Positively 4th Street next. The moral to these two songs is, do not make Bob mad at you.
It’s an open question which is the greatest rock song of all time, but this is undoubtedly the most historically significant. It forced rock to grow up.
Here is an artist that has powerful vocals and has so much soul!! "Simply Red - Holding Back The Years (Live at Montreux Jazz Festival, 1992)" I am giving you this live link because not many, but some people don't believe he is singing it.
If you dig into Dylan's first albums, you won't hear this style of music. His was far more sparse, almost tone-less and more like the New York City folk style. Dylan was trying to expand his musical audience AND at the same time learning more keyboards and electric guitar skills. His first 3 albums followed his folkie-reputation, with a few 'strays' into new styles. His next album BRINGING IT ALL HOME had stronger electric/rock entries and this album HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED solidified with this #1 Rock song. He is, by the way, an Album Artist, not a singles artist. Folks can pick and choose one or two songs but fans who want to learn about Dylan's music do not cheat themselves by only listening to a few 'hits'. They devour whole albums, and for a longer stretches of time - weeks and months each.
Yes, but in the end, it comes full circle. "When ya ain't got nothin', you got nothin' to lose. You're invisible now, ya got no secrets to conceal." Dylan's lyrics reflect the freedom that comes from having nothing left to lose, leading to a chance for genuine self-discovery. When everything is stripped away, the fear of further loss disappears, allowing for a fresh start without the burdens of past mistakes or expectations. This highlights the paradoxical comfort in hitting rock bottom, where the absence of external pressures and ego-driven pursuits can lead to true personal growth and a more authentic life.
Bob is playing a "harmonica" or, as you say, a "mouth organ." It's great that you focus on Dylan's lyrics; as you may already know, he eventually won the NobelPrize in Literature for such lyrics, which caused a big controversy amongst the snobby IvoryTower folk!
Rolling stone magazine in 2012 had it no 1 greatest song ever written.Dylan has 12 songs in the top 500.Thats saying alot when you consider probably a million songs. He won aNobel prize for literature in music in 2012 also.
The song is a critic of the beat nick/ hippy culture of the 60s , it asks these mostly wasp kids the question of what they are going to do with all the change they are demanding, hence the line "how does it feel to be on your own, with no direction home ,like a rolling stone" . Listened to in this context all the lyrics become self evident .
The closest song to this quotes from this song. Martha Wainwright's "Bloody M***********g A*****e" is just as cathartic and explosive and well worth hearing.
Being sixty four now my little window of history goes from the death of John Kennedy when I was 3 to the moon no home phone, cable or home computer to today. What would happen if people today had to rely on their own imagination and abilities to live well.
This was a message to lyndon johnson, the us president during the Vietnam war its not quite as direct as it seems there are many layers to this song those are just two
I think you are correct this song is about Women in general. The grace that they have fallen from is their loss of their sex appeal. The young sexy woman has life by the balls and as she grows older, she loses what she depended on and now has to accept life using something other than her body. IMHO.
This is the meanest breakup song ever. I love it. But it's so mean! You think breaking up with Taylor makes you a target. Break up with Bob, and he wins the Nobel Prize
Nobody can put a message to a song after song than Bob Dylan. You looked like you enjoyed it.
