7 million copies sold on a system that was rampant with piracy (Commodore 64) is beyond impressive! 🕹
Yes, with 7 million sold, there probably was at least 5 million pirated copies running in the wild.
My dad brought hundreds of game disks and the system with C64 monitor when I was a kid and I now know they were all pirate copies. Imagine giving a kid sex games I broke at least one controller trying to climax 😂😂
Yeah.
I still have a box full of disks and tapes.
I only had 2 original games though.
It's so cool that System 3 has a kickstarter for Last Ninja now so I can send some well deserved moolah their way.
I didn't have money to buy games back in the day so I like to give back when/where I can now. 😊
@@rolling-roadkill Same, I have the one with the mask and shuriken Last Ninja 2. This is great coverage of the story, thanks!
That's well over 50% of the user base playing this game
I became obsessed with this game in elementary school, free day was on Fridays and I awaited each and every time I got to boot up this classic.
Boot up 😂. I’m guessing you had the luxury of a disk. Most of us had to wait for the tape to load in for a few minutes (assuming there were no crashes mid load)
surely u couldn’t actually play it. i absolutely struggled was too young to work out the pixel perfect rubbish.
@@leonidas6682 I learned from my uncle who would play it while he babysat me at around 8-10 years old, he mastered those jumps!
Hahaha that's an awesome memory mate, glad you shared
Back in the late 80s last ninja 2 was a c64 show piece to wow friends.
Yeah, it was super impressive for the hardware. You can see why it was such a struggle to get to that level too.
John Twiddy did excellent here
Amazing video...I have great memories of playing this game with my friend in the late '80s. Ninjas and karate were so popular at the time, the 1980s ruled! A great amount of info and research that you did here, cheers to you Sir.
I really appreciate that mate. This one did take a really long time. But I'm super happy with how it turned out for sure
Hey man thank you so much for bringing this video out while the kickstarter is going. I kept seeing the ad, but knowing I didn't grow up with it, I was all whatever, but this video really showcases something special that I may never have looked into otherwise! Thanks again, might have to back the Kickstarter now... 😅
Ahhh that's awesome, glad you enjoyed it
One of my Top 5 C64 games of all time. As a 10yo playground pirate Down Under🇦🇺, I have backed the Kickstarter as repentence for my sins and o get that sweet, sweet Switch physical. 😊
Yeah, I'm excited for it too
Jumping across water was so annoying. Classic C64 game though.
Major classic, that artwork and music helped push it up a level to legendary status if you ask me
"ask someone to tell you what the most iconic video game for the comodore 64 is and is pretty damn likely he will tell you the fuck is a comodore 64?"
😂
Hahaha ok... In the retro space at least... Perhaps my friends are all a bit too nerdy
I remember the first one in the 80's UK C64. It was futuristic in it's visuals, but... it was too bloody hard for a 10 year old. Like Dragon's Lair HARD! Never experienced ANY of the sequels because we'd all moved on to Amigas by 1988. GREAT VIDEO!
I remember the first game and it being a nightmare to play. Glad I was right when I thought that the movements were harder than they should be.
This game would explode today if it was remade by a company that respects the IP and given better control ability. Exploration was fine.
I think so too mate
Everyone knows that Sho 'Nuff, The Shogun of Harlem was the master! Excellent video, as always!
Who's the master....
... I AM!
OOOOOOOOOH SHIIIIIIIII....
@@slopesgameroom I can still hear that clap of thunder and the music kicking in to this day!
I'm also British, but I got into the Ninja Turtles a couple of years before the cartoon via the Tabletop RPG and the comics.
That's cool
wow i just realized at 18:51 that the Revenge of the Ninja movie cover is exactly the same as the ZX Spectrum Saboteur loading screen! The more you live the more you know, i guess
Wow... Just looked it up!
Move aside Contra and Arnie!
The artwork for the second game was on the back of one of my dad's Acorn Electron mags and it has stayed with me forever!
Yeah, its incredible artwork that sticks with you for sure
It smash the kickstater goal at 159,000 so far hopefully this is a chance for a sequel.
Fingers xd
This jog down memory lane now has me remembering a favorite amiga game with an amazing soundtrack and a suspiciously derivative name - FIRST SAMURAI .
I know of that game but didn't play it much
Oh man, thanks for this vid, Slope!:)
I grew up on the LN games. It's the series that made me fall in deeply in love with games and wanted to make them in the future - a dream that, perhaps thankfully (seeing how the business operates), never came to fruition.
LN2 also made me fall in love with metal music. My original C64 was a NTSC model, so everything run a bit faster, including the music. When i heard the tunes from LN2 i always heard them as "guitar tracks". Later on, when i heard speed and thrash metal i thought "hey, it's just like The Office level music", this is so cool. So yeah, i heard metal in a SID version of Tangerine Dream's "Midnight in Tula". But after hearing FastLoaders i guess i wasn't the only one. Thank You, mr. Gray!;)
As for the Kickstarter, i was really pumped when i first heard about it, but when it launched i've realized that they're missing the main ingredient - a boxed re-release of the original games for the C64, disks and/or cartidges, the balaclava and the rubber shuriken. The PC version seems kinda redundant, since Vice is around.
Really appreciate the write up here mate. This was a tough one to make but I'm so glad the System 3 guys gave me so much info :)
As for the Kickstarter. Might be worth reaching out. Although it also might be too late. I hope it all goes well for them and the fans
Serious tip of the hat for bringing up The Last Dragon! A bloody classic
How could I not... It's a classic
I'm glad this film had become a cult classic. I had vague memories of it from childhood that I thought were a fever dream and it took me something like 20 years to figure out what the hell movie that was or if it was even real. Now I watch it a few times a year ^_^ holds up EXACTLY to my bizarre memories of it.
Hell yeah The Last Dragon
Who’s the MAAASTTTA??! SHONUFF
Bruce leerooaaayh
WOW, I Thought I was the only person who loves The Last Dragon, I still watch it at least twice a year since my dad bought it on VHS in the mid 90's.
Good man! It's an absolute classic. Should be talked about as much as the typical 80s greats
I remember spending many hours of my youth on these games on my c64, those were the good old days for sure. I always wondered whatever happened to them and if they were ever going to make more. I always thought of the Ninja Gaiden series as sort of a spiritual successor to The Last Ninja series. Great video, thanks!
Appreciate this mate. Yeah, crazy to hear how many times they got canned
Very nice ad interesting video, but I’m afraid to point out that the original Commodore 64 of “Ninja 3” version was programmed by Stanley Schembri, who coded “Barbarian”, “Antiriad” and “Cauldron II” for Palace Software and then “Vendetta” for System 3 in 1990 (which has a very similar structure to the Ninja games, with driving sections coded by another C64 legend: Chris Butler); at that time I saw an interview to Zzap!64 where Stan said he was coding the game on a PC with the PDS System connected to a C64. Sadly Stan has passed away in 2009 😞
Pretty sure Chris Butler had nothing to do with Vendetta.
And yeah, missing Stan is really shoddy. Also, Dokk had nothing to do with the c64 intro, that was all Robin Levy
There are a lot of inaccuracies in the video 😐
How's it going Luke.
You are not wrong my friend. This was a mistake on my part. Also Marks involvement with Atari was freelance based.
Appreciate you pointing this out. I chatted to Mark on the phone today to confirm and I suggested he comments on the video with the corrections and I will pin it for all to see.
Besides that, hope you enjoyed the video mate
It's both cool and weird as a retro gamer to get a video of "iconic" game I've never played beyond 1-2 screens of the nes port where I didn't know what to do in.
I sure didn't know this game had ever any success.
Probably time to give it another try.
The news port honestly.... Wasn't the best.
The OG home computer release sold over 20 mil though which is a big deal in the scene
i remember renting this for the nes a couple times as a kid. i never got too far but it was fun to explore the world and try to figure out how to proceed.
Yeah exploration was awesome in a game like this
I remember playing the second game on the Famicom/NES and me and my brothers could never beats way back, we reached the ghost ninja ( turns out it's the last boss from what I learn few years ago )
but I had no idea that they were making a fourth game on the ps4 until now.
Both the PS2 and PS4 titles looked great. Still I think I would prefer an isometric title
A remake of those games in one collection sounds good to old me.
I'm excited for it
@@slopesgameroom i am to after all those crappy aaaa titles.
Dude, this was definitely a fave back in the day. Love that you’re covering this.
I knew I would get a hardcore group come and check this one out hopefully y'all like what I did here
Great video! I am a lifelong fan of the franchise and a Diamond subscriber for the Kickstarter project. I was alerted to your video via the project itself, and really enjoyed it. I will be looking forward to future videoed, LN related or otherwise!
Oh wow. A diamond tier backer :D glad you enjoyed it mate. Genuinely was awesome to make this vid and find out more about it
The Last Dragon is always relevant to every conversation. I actually just got a 4K copy of it a few days ago coincidently.
Yeah, I might need to get that too
AVGN showed me this game xd
Yeah, he didn't play the best version sadly
I remember playing the NES version and I didn't have the patience to keep trying to get past the part where you have to cross the water by jumping onto the little raft/boat 😂. It was janky, but I always went back to try to beat it after a while. Can't remember whether it had a different name though...I thought it was called Shadow of the Ninja.
Still have boxed copies of Last Ninja Remix and Last Ninja 3 for the C64. Never got really far in Last Ninja Remix because of those jumps, could never find the right spot. In Last Ninja 3 I got further but the problem was that if you died back then you died and had to start all over from the very beginning. But I had a blast playing the games and still today remember them as one of the best games for the system.
The last ninja series has a hardcore following from the home computer space.
The games are definitely punishing but the more you played the better and more rewarding they become. I think that's why they are so fondly remembered by the hardcore crowd
C64 Last Ninja 3 was coded by Stan Schembri not Dave Collins. The Ninja 3 intro (and outro) was done solely by myself and coded by the guys from Cyberdyne Systems who coded Armalyte. Dokk did the 16-but version of the intro later (I ended up doing the 16-bit outro)
It’s all there in the credits
rock-hard game, never completed it. put my joystick through the wall though.
It's a toughy for sure
I have the bell rung and this is the first video I’ve seen in months from you! Why?!
Ahhhhh man, hopefully that changes
I remember early preview screenshots of the first game showing a 'food' meter. I imagine a game as hard as this having survival elements too would have broken me :)
Hahaha yes, it's crazy impressive what they were able to do on this
That Shonuff guy looks awful familiar…
Seriously though- I friggin LOVE Last Dragon 😂
"HOW DID YOU KNOW.... THAT... WAS THE BLUE ONE!"
This was Ninja Gaiden hard even before it even existed
Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon is awesome fun! Nice reference!
Sooooo much fun. I think my son's old enough to appreciate it now... Gotta get him to watch it with me soon
Nice work... and now I'm sat here imagining how good a gba-standard remake of them would be... :o
Yeah, I'm excited to see how they port these to newer systems
Ninja by Eric Van Lustbader was one of my favorite books in my teens.
Ahhhhhh glad you enjoyed that. I did originally find a news snippet of a talk show host talking about it but it was weirdly deleted by the time I got to editing
That concept art for Last Ninja 4 😮
Yeah, super nice
Oh excellent I am here for this. The intro to LN3 is epic.
It was so impressive
0:46 Patrick Stewart was a bad f-in Ninja
its a very great interview. thank you for so much effort to create that.... i hope system 3 and Mark Cale brings future games with lots of riddles to solve... maybe a Tusker2 or another Last Ninja and and and
Tusker 2 would be awesome
Hell yeah! Loved this
Love the Shenmue music at the end ❤😂
Cheers matey
This story needs a Silicon Valley style series
The best ninja game is Ninja Golf on the Atari 7800. Loads of fun.
You are a man of culture I see
25:08 Someone should ask cover painter Mark Ryden! Maybe he remembers.
I saw the screenshots at 25:45 on the internet some years ago - that first pic with the many Samurai looked awesome - and they looked faceless and scary
I think that ads charm. Reminds me of those GO games ubisoft did for mobiles... Which were surprisingly addictive
As an afterthought - the enemies shown remind me of some in "Sekiro"
The Commodore jingle has a Jesus is my friend vibe
that's hella cool you collab'ed with them. TH-cam randomly suggested System3's newly-created channel to me a few days ago and the timing of this one seemed a tad suspicious :D
Yeah, they were very open with helping make the video. Good guys
Hell yeah Tetris Movie
You forgot about the last ninja IV attempt for the C64.
I was not told of this
Shonuff! I can't hear you! Shonuff! 😂
CATCHES BULLETS .... WITH HIS TEETH!!!!!
Obviously my favourite game of all time…just take a look at my handle and profile picture! So many great memories playing this game, even till this day. Thanks a million for this great video.
Wow, thanks so much. For me it was more a game I enjoyed at the time but I think I was too young to fully appreciate it.
As the years went on I remedied that of course and it's easy to see how this was one of the home computer scenes ultimate package!
Really appreciate the kind words. It's you hardcore fans that I wanted to please the most with this one
25:20 surely the involvement of Philips soured the deal on this after the Nintendo backstabbing?
Who knows. I know I would love to find out more regarding all this
Only ever saw this on the BBC micro on a black and white TV. 😅
Oh really? Yeah it had many ports for sure
@@slopesgameroom had to find a play through video after watching that. Nostalgia bone well and truly tickled 🤣
Dude yes slope uploaded thx u!!!
Hope you enjoyed it mate
The last ninja died in 1964, his name was Seiko Fujita, Koganomono.
Wrong last ninja mate :P
@@slopesgameroom only last ninja, gr8 b8 m8, i r8 8/8
Surely the word exaggerated is enough, over exaggerated suggests insanity, right?
I exaggerated too much
We need more ninja games. Maybe one day like a dragon spin off ninja game. Rgg studios could do wonders for the ninja style games.
Bring on the new shinobi
@slopesgameroom they could easily make a new shinobi. They got like a dragon pirates coming next year. So ninjas makes sense for the next spin off game. Merge yakuza with shinobi n everybody wins.
I've always felt Last Ninja was a series to be admired rather than enjoyed. Crap controls, obtuse puzzles and absurd difficulty spoil a beautifully presented game
I have heard this a few times. It is indeed stunning and I love seeing how it all loads up... Adds to the charm.
Those that pushed past the controls really did get something special here
Gorgeous looking game, incredible music and atmosphere. Pity its horrible to control, especially those isometric jumps. However, can't help but love it
Yeah, it's a classic
So they made a more accurate story than Ubisoft
I'm keeping optimistic... I think I'm stupid :S
Awesome job! But no mention of Vendetta..??
Maybe it needs it's own video
Considering the absolute trash that was allowed on the PS2 I'm surprised to hear any games were rejected, let alone one that looks as good as that Last Ninja prototype.
Yeah, for the time it looked good. Happy I was able to get hold of that footage
Remember it, think we owned it but don't remember it with any particular fondness, at least from it's punishing pixel perfect game play
It was a hard game for sure. Rewarding but still quite hard for sure
Sho-nufff!!!!!!! Omg that takes me back slope!!!!!! 😂🫶🏿👊🏿
Such a classic film, sad more people don't know it
I played the NES port of Last Ninja and had a hard time with it.
Yeah, that's defo not the best version
I'm the Master
I LOVE THE LAST DRAGON!
SHO NUFF!
The collection is just so expensive. For just the old versions... I played them in the past and still have the old ones. So yeah, I would like to support it, but it not a great deal
..
That's fair, how much would you suggest the company charge?
@@slopesgameroom 30€ or so.
we want a LAST NINJA 4....
It failed 4 times apparently... I thought it was only 3 times but who's counting. I think the prospect for something big is slim, so only something small might appear and it will only be well after System 3 have delivered on their current kickstarter I imagine.
Let's see how the Kickstarter goes I guess
Great video Slope! As someone who is just now getting into Commodore 64 via MiSTer FPGA, I'd love to see more from that platform. If anyone has game recommendations, please drop a reply!
I'm sure I can get more home computer complete histories done. I wanna tackle speedball eventually
Bruce Leroy catching bullets with his teeth?
TO THE BEAT OF THE RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT...
Oh man, that's nostalgic. Never liked the game, as mechanically it had too many things that were an instant NO from me, but these games were innovational as all hell.
Yeah for sure mate, I loved the design of them and then some
Wait ... So in the UK was this game known as "The Last Hero"?
No
I AM THE MASTER
He's GOT THE GLOW!
Weird how you mention the amazing music but play none of it.
Had a few issues behind the scenes with that which forced me to remove it sadly. The original music edition is available for patreons
this game can go to hell. it looked so cool but i was way too young to understand why i couldn’t land on a boat or rocks etc. if i met the devs and sort them out what they did to me at such a young age.
Hahaha yeah, it is a tough one for sure. But those that got past it found a super rewarding game. It has a hardcore following that surprises most console gamers
@@slopesgameroom i refuse to believe anyone got through it. as a kid i couldn’t understand why bees were so hard to get through when i’m playing as a ninja.. also landing on the boat or across those ledges to get the stick i think. all three were impossible to me. makes me unreasonably angry now thinking back like an avgn character.
I know it's nowt to do with you but do you have any idea what's happened to Larry Bundy?
Yeah, he's just laying low. That's all I really wanna say on that I'm afraidp
@@slopesgameroom well, whatever it is that he's going through give him my best regards and I hope to see him again soon. 😁
Cool!
Hella cool
22:07 Mev
Yeah that sounded weird lol
Sho' Nuff!
WHO'S THE MASTER!
Fun games, but they were absolute garbage when it came to the platforming.
They were defo quite hard at first
❤
The soundtrack to Ninja 2 brings back so many happy memories! I played that game to death as a kid, as I probably did for all System 3 games
Yeah the soundtrack was epic. Also got a serious soft spot for BANGKOK KNIGHS ost too
Great to actually meet you (if only briefly) today at Play. ❤. Hope you had a good afternoon and if you’re there again tomorrow have fun!
Yeah was awesome to put a face to the avatar lol. Sorry I was in a rush didn't get back home til nearly 1am
