Well dollar is for foreigners because perhaps it's more convenient for them but when it comes for the changes after buying something, it's an confusion even for me who born and live in the country.
Best thing about it is changing a 100$ and feeling like an absolute baller. Also, banks do change damaged dollar bills or at least I've seen it done. Money changers will also take them at a discounted rate.
Actually we count 4100 riels = 1$, so you can just multiply the number. Note: Some place count 4000 riels = 1$ and as you said 20000 riels = 5$ which mean ,,, (5$ x 4000 riels = 20000 riels) it’s this simple 😊

I lived in northern Cambodia before and we used mainly Thai’s Baht and dollars…we didn’t even use Riel.
