Yeah me too. Totally put it in the “well, I’ll never play this riff” catagory. Came upon the tab 7 years after starting and it’s now in the maybe I’ll play it catagory.
I feel kinda proud after seeing this. I taught myself that Metallica riff with tabs when I was much younger. Not saying I'm any good, because I can't play at all, but I did manage that riff which is kind of cool looking back. Sweet vid!
When you said at the end "this is the hardest thing that guitarist deal with" and the yousician play along ad came along... I almost died of laughter hahahaha
I was hoping I wasn't the only person who thought that For Whom the Bell Tolls riff is difficult even though it sounds easy. It's the first riff I thought of when I saw this title, and I'm glad you included it. I still mess it up to this day. The length of how long Kirk does it doesn't help.
I’ve only been playing guitar for about a year and I learned every breath you take cuz I thought it was a cool song. so to hear you say it’s a challenge made my day haha
Although I'm a bassist, not a guitar player, I would say the song that drove me insane was Get Lucky by Daft Punk. I agreed to perform it with one of my friend's bands for a show they were doing. I'd only been playing bass for less than a year, but I thought it was an easy riff and that I could learn it in a few days. Oh boy was a wrong. Part of the difficulty was the fact that I also was supposed to sing it because the singer of the band said that he just couldn't hit the high notes, but it was so difficult to focus on playing this bassline I barely knew and singing the song. The funny thing was, the show was cancelled last minute due to bad weather conditions, so after hours of me stressing out and trying to learn the part, I didn't even get to play it.
Good idea for a video man. Pretty sure Andy played Every Breath without barring though. It’s all palm muted so when I do it, I fret every note individually. Makes it easier
From the live footage I've seen, it seems like he keeps the same hand position around the different chords, but uses the first finger to alternate fretting the bass note and the major / minor third.
The intro to "This Charming Man" sounds pretty cheap and easy but is surprisingly difficult to count and leads into a really busy verse line. It's great.
The Metallica riff is actually a version of Tony Iommi at the end of Fairies Wear Boots. I loved that riff the second I heard it in '70. The guys in Metallica must have also.
DUDE! My parent's went on a cruise for a week when I was in high school and somewhat new to learning guitar. My buddy brought his half stack over and we jammed the whole week and learned back in black (with my keyboard as drums) and For Whom The Bell Tolls. I was tasked with that riff and it's just weird but I got it after a couple days!
I guessed back in black as soon as I saw it, but I thought it was gonna be the main riff, not the bridge. Getting the main riff's bend so close to the nut was super difficult as a new player
Every breath you take brings back memories. I remember that chord. Jez what a stretch to get it clean. I wasn't the best guitar player but I eventually got it and like anything else you put the effort into it became second nature. Gave up guitar completely in my mid twenties and never really touch one again for a quarter of a century but two weeks ago I suddenly had a notion for playing again so I bought a cheep little Tanglewood acoustic, my fingers are in a hell of a state lol. It's amazing what pops into your head again after all these years but I tried that chord again and was no where near it lol.
Pet peeve for me is that hardly anyone...including Chuck Berry in later versions...ever play the Johnny B. Goode intro correctly. There's a reason that lick is so iconic but it's always over simplified and played in the wrong key. His original recording is rarely matched by anyone.
Having learned most Dave Matthews songs (I was in high school) I've become I immune to my fret hand burning after a few seconds seconds. Cry Freedom and especially Crash into me.
Very nice video, sir. *polite clap* One little tip I would give for people trying to learn "Every Breath You Take" is that you don't have to hold your index (and ring) finger in place for each chord position (which I used to do myself). I was watching the video for the song and noticed Andy Summers actually moves his index finger on the 1 and 3 beats of the arpeggio instead of barring it the whole time. It makes it much easier to play. ;o)
Every breathe you take - If you watch the original video, through the main riff, you can see Andy summers move his main finger between two positions as he plays, INSTEAD of barring the chord. Really interesting, check it out.
There is a misconception that Andy Summers plays this with a rigid left hand, he doesn't. He moves his index finger to reach the first & last notes making the riff 1% easier than a rigid hand.
I actually immediately thought of that exact riff. Although I play it without those jumps to the 7th fret. I use the first and 2nd fret of the a string instead.
Thanx man, I finally got to figure out Snow :) I think keeping the rythm in this part is somewhat challenging also, practicing it with a metronome helped.
When I was a noob at guitar, I always thought Snow was hard. Turns out that practicing alternating picking helped and I could put it down in 2 weeks or so.
The "For whom the bell tolls" lick is actually quite easy if you play it the 'Tallica way :D Start with your pinky fretting the g string at the 12th fret and go from there. No issues with the palm mutes and bared notes on the same frets.
I was going to say the same thing. I always had trouble with it cos the tab I was learning from did it the way he did in the video. Then I saw footage of Kirk playing it with the lowest note on the g string, and it was much simpler.
John Sullivan Oh these tab books are full of flaws. Sometimes it feels like a guy who made them never really sat down and tried to play the songs. They usually make stuff much harder sometimes even unplayable for some reason.
@@kkarx Yup, as a bass player I agree: I've seen tabs that go all the way up and down the fretboard, when the song is played by going up the strings without moving your fretting hand at all.
@@patfix I highly recommend it. I felt like I forgot everything I'd ever learned on guitar while I was there lol. But Mark is a really cool guy and an awesome teacher
I remember trying to learn Snow (Hey Oh) back in highschool, thinking it sounded cool and not to hard, I had just learned how to play too. It drove me absolutely nuts.
"you won't be able to play the riff if you can't move your fingers to the right place fast enough" "that goes for every guitar riff" that made me laugh. you seem like a great guitar teacher. this video is actually very helpful for me as a beginner :)
I mean, yeah. If you already have good alternate picking it doesn’t sound very difficult because what’s hard about it is the chords which you don’t really recognize just hearing it.
every breath you take "this is the nine here" - it's the third, actually. andy summers doesn't play it like this. he doesn't stretch his fingers that much, but rather lifts his index finger.
To me it sounds like those long stretch notes on Every Breath are played staccato which means you don't need to hold them down like a chord. Play them arpeggio style and it's not hard at all. Also it's recorded in A flat so it's even harder if you're trying to hold down the chords. You'll have to borrow some Paul Gilbert fingers. On the other hand Message In A Bottle is the really tricky part to play. I don't think it sounds easy to anyone though so that rules that song out.
@@Bulletbyter Spot on comment. Watch any of the videos of Andy Summers playing this live and he is not holding down the full barre with the first finger - it is moving between the low E and G strings
It's not that hard to play. If you try to play it the same way the guitarist did you'll lose a hand. Try playing the A chord differently. Play A0, D2, G4, D2 and G6 instead. Takes a lot of pressure and stress off your hand for the A chord and lets you rest a little
Judging by the fact that 99.9999% of people don't play it anywhere close to correctly, you might be right. (Seriously, why do so many people play it with power chords? It's so irritating.)
I don't get that either. There are videos of Ritchie himself explaining that it's played with fourths and with fingers. Furthermore, just listen to it and it's not that hard to tell.
For Whom the Bell tolls is definitely deceptively hard in places. It took me a long time to get it right, even more since I had to sing too. Still it's a cool song and it brings back memories of high school playing it live.

Wow I never even really thought about it but just thinking about it, it does sound tough
“Stay Tuned” definitely a pun that I never heard of before about a million times already

"To play nothing is the most difficult thing to play on the guitar" True words.
5:57 he’s pointing the middle finger
"This is the hardest thing to play" * ad starts immediately after* hahaha that was great timing
When I first kinda got into guitar a long time ago, I remember thinking snow sounded hard, but figured it wouldn't be too bad cause I played a lot of metal. Woo boy was I wrong lmfao
Honorable mention, Shape of my Heart by Sting. The chords position and progression are hard 😆
The Lil Wayne-Solo sounds easy... but its not, Only Lil Wayne can pull that one off ;)
can't*
Yuporn Fukadong Hes like.. Above us, like a god or something.
The notes are easy. But getting that of timing feeling makes it really hard, 😂
It's so hard to get his time, and even his way to play. Is too easy but because is easy it becames hard...
Well there is some major syncopation and hammer ons that are very complex so........Yeah
I remember being a beginner looking up the tab to snow (hey oh) and I was like wtf is going on here
Yeah me too. Totally put it in the “well, I’ll never play this riff” catagory. Came upon the tab 7 years after starting and it’s now in the maybe I’ll play it catagory.
Brilliant video concept. Also that strat is 😍
Omg i am a huge fan of yours🤩🤩
Aayooo huge fan Sir
I feel kinda proud after seeing this. I taught myself that Metallica riff with tabs when I was much younger. Not saying I'm any good, because I can't play at all, but I did manage that riff which is kind of cool looking back. Sweet vid!
When you said at the end "this is the hardest thing that guitarist deal with" and the yousician play along ad came along... I almost died of laughter hahahaha
Every breath you take is the og for this video. We all thought it’d be easy before we learned the chords
You actually made Snow look easier than it sounds. How?
Thats what years of practice looks like dude
That riff has never sounded difficult.. because it's not.
It took me 3 years to get this up to tempo
@@uncomfortableshirt it isn't easy at all

@@anthonyschultz296 for real tho laughing my ass off it sounded amazing?
It's a cool tune. I do like Castles Made Of Sand better. That one is hard to nail!
The funny thing was, the show was cancelled last minute due to bad weather conditions, so after hours of me stressing out and trying to learn the part, I didn't even get to play it.
damn!
Post a video cover of it while singing man!
post a cover haha
got me curious how hard could it be so I searched for a video and dang... + singing? I commend you
th-cam.com/video/bwS4lX0P0-Q/w-d-xo.html
Singing while playing bass is hard af mate cuz u using ur pulse.
Licks that sound easy but are hard: back in black was a difficult one.
Licks that sound hard but are easy: ERUPTION.
The only easy part of eruption is the tapping even tho most people do it wrong anyways
huh eruption is easy ? bruh
In what universe is eruption easy bro?
Who would ever assume that Snow is easy? Even in high school I was impressed to see one person able to do it at full speed.
It's great.
Johnny Marr has a lot of really good licks that are harder than they seem for sure
So cool having the car “Kit” from knight rider behind you When you’re playing guitar. 💪
The Metallica riff is actually a version of Tony Iommi at the end of Fairies Wear Boots. I loved that riff the second I heard it in '70. The guys in Metallica must have also.
Totally right. I never put that together even though those are two songs I've loved since I was about 12 or 13.
Yes they loved the fuck out of Sabbath
Yeah I noticed that to way back when I learned them. But I learned them both in 7th grade and never found either one hard.
Elix Tido and what’s funny in Black Sabbath version of it is even faster and it’s in the key of G.
Alex Williamson's blind adventures Gm, but yeah it is a lil faster but I always thought was easier.
Snow sounds so sick the way you play it, good stuff dude
The minor add9 chord is my favorite chord, without a doubt, it sounds so hauntingly beautiful.
When you see the SG, you know that AC/DC is coming
Or the doors 🎸
Weirdly as soon as I saw the SG, highway to hell started playing in my head. I wasn't far off 🤘
I guessed back in black as soon as I saw it, but I thought it was gonna be the main riff, not the bridge. Getting the main riff's bend so close to the nut was super difficult as a new player
All the delay and reverb he put on it wasn't very AC/DC-like though... They usually just crank up their amps and that's it
Radiohead :) but thom doesn't do hard licks so
Just watching how you played "every breath you take" hurt my fingers
I find Mastodon riffs hard and they sound easy, but I also suck so it could just be that
gregfox they’re not necessarily hard, but they are definitely weird af and that might be why they seem hard
Mastodon likes to use open strings a LOT.
Fantano's Red Flannel Now we know you’re worse.
You probably don’t suck those two are BEASTS
I saw them live up close and the only I picked up was
a Billy K pick off the floor
Chuck is God. I want everyone here to go play with their ding-a-ling!
Having learned most Dave Matthews songs (I was in high school) I've become I immune to my fret hand burning after a few seconds seconds.
Cry Freedom and especially Crash into me.
0:08 got me to like. What an overwhelming amount of charm and charisma
This charming man by the smiths. Brutal for a lovely song.
Ryan Kelsey A lot of Johnny Marr’s guitar work sounds simple but is deceptively difficult
Think that’s hard? Try playing the Headmaster Ritual
Very nice video, sir. *polite clap*
One little tip I would give for people trying to learn "Every Breath You Take" is that you don't have to hold your index (and ring) finger in place for each chord position (which I used to do myself).
Smoke on the water is actually the hardest song to play on the guitar
Yeah, because its the first song you play as noobie XD
Lmao
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin so much is harder
You tried ANY DragonForce song? 😂
@@chuggsworth6283 here come the flashbacks
The algorithm is really putting i. Work for you, your videos have been at the top of my recommended a couple weeks now
There is a misconception that Andy Summers plays this with a rigid left hand, he doesn't. He moves his index finger to reach the first & last notes making the riff 1% easier than a rigid hand.
Haha as soon as you pulled out th SG i know your about to go ACDC LMAOOO
I actually immediately thought of that exact riff. Although I play it without those jumps to the 7th fret. I use the first and 2nd fret of the a string instead.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOÓOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Yaaaa
wash your mouth out, that is not a fucking SG
Jajajaja
Thanx man, I finally got to figure out Snow :) I think keeping the rythm in this part is somewhat challenging also, practicing it with a metronome helped.
The main riff from UFO's "Rock Bottom".
The Intro to Mr. Big's "Green Tinted Sixties Mind"
When I was a noob at guitar, I always thought Snow was hard. Turns out that practicing alternating picking helped and I could put it down in 2 weeks or so.
Thanks for the tip, im close to nailing it.
I originally cheated, put a capo on the 4 and you could pick through an em c g and d and it was really easy, until I learned the actual way.
Xtremex HyprShot I used to do that too, until I realized that it doesnt sound authentic enough.
I can get it as fast as the original, even faster..... By fingering 😂
Otherwise I'm about 20-30% slower, but I'm improving
AAK Music The riff is not hard, what's hard is playing it for like 2 minutes straight
Watched this video 3 years ago, and am finally coming back to it able to play every riff showcased. :D

It drove me absolutely nuts.
Tyler: Starts talking about triads and the chords for Snow (Hey-Oh)
Me: Gets my Mel Bay's guitar chords book
This guy is fantastic. Makes me want to point out the same things, but on BASS.
"you won't be able to play the riff if you can't move your fingers to the right place fast enough" "that goes for every guitar riff" that made me laugh. you seem like a great guitar teacher. this video is actually very helpful for me as a beginner :)
Did anyone really think Snow was easy? GTFO.
Uhhhhh how long have you been playing, cowboy? lol
@@all_invite_0hm even for experienced guitar player it's no seven Nation army.
I mean, yeah. If you already have good alternate picking it doesn’t sound very difficult because what’s hard about it is the chords which you don’t really recognize just hearing it.
What does gtfo mean?
@@someperson9052 It means Get The Fuck Out.
I guess the hardest thing to do for a guitar player is reading sheet music
every breath you take
"this is the nine here" - it's the third, actually. andy summers doesn't play it like this. he doesn't stretch his fingers that much, but rather lifts his index finger.
I think reminding guitar players that they're allowed to get out of the way of the other musicians is pretty important
Unless it's the bassist
A concept Frusciante was a master of
Every Breath you take is a fret hand killer. I agree. Way harder to play then what it seems. Good song picks for showing hard riffs that sound easy.
@@AlfaRomeoQ message in a bottle is easier imo at least for me
Purple Rain is also quite difficult
Takes a lot of pressure and stress off your hand for the A chord and lets you rest a little
Nice sounding strat, Tyler!
As soon as he grabbed the SG I knew it was that Riff. It's true, that pull off really is hard to ... pull off
Just saw that thumbnail that had the 2 songs I was just practicing...
oh cmon everyone knows the hardest thing to play is smoke on the water
Judging by the fact that 99.9999% of people don't play it anywhere close to correctly, you might be right.
(Seriously, why do so many people play it with power chords? It's so irritating.)
I don't get that either. There are videos of Ritchie himself explaining that it's played with fourths and with fingers. Furthermore, just listen to it and it's not that hard to tell.
Sweet home Alabama.
The correct answer is actually Real American - Hulk Hogan Theme Song.
@@Wallychans idk that nwo theme song is pretty gnarly
