It's a pastry topped casserole. Also known as a lie not a pie! It looks nice but the sauce could do with being a little thicker for me and I don't like whole grain mustard so I'd leave that out.
I’m in the southern US and we wouldn’t consider anything without a bottom crust a pie, but that’s a regional “thing”. We are going to try this recipe with what we call country sausage because it looks delicious.
It looks delicious. Whenever I have sausage and a biscuit together I add mustard to break up the fattiness of the sausage. This looks so good. And you can have a pie with a bottom crust without a top crust so I don’t see why you can’t have a pie with the top crust and no bottom crust.
I'm a new subscriber but have spent some time already checking out your previous recipes and I'm VERY impressed (as I am with this pie). Love that you don't need to use expensive ingredients to make the most delicious of dishes and that they are so easy to prepare, even for students or young people starting out in life, or people who find themselves alone in older age. Credit to you - I'm in awe. xx
Just made this. We loved it. I didn’t have whole grain mustard, so I used Dijon. It worked well. I have made many of your recipes and love them all. In fact I have your cookbook. Thanks for sharing your talent with us❤
Hi Nicky, I made this tonight and it was fantastic. What a brilliant way to transform a few humble supermarket Bangers. Will definitely make again. Hopefully I won’t forget to add the cream next time! I’m sure it will taste even better.
I love love love this recipe and I don’t mind calling either way. I’m gonna make it because it looks so delicious and I’m gonna call it a sausage pie. Thank you for your thoughts and your inventions that’s teaching me ideas to present my children and hubby. Have a blessed day
Like you I'd call it a caserole with a pastry lid so no one is disappointed lol. I would also stir in some chopped fresh herbs like parsley before putting on pastry, that's just my preference. Thanks for all your delicious recipes 😊
hi, I love your videos and have made several of your recipes to the great delight of my family; so thank you very much! It is because I like your cooking so much that I feel compelled to tell you that when I made this recipe, I ended up with a waterpark rather than a pie/casseroll. I am about to go swimming in it right now, and I am very sad. I believe the chicken stock volume should be reduced to 2.5 milliliters rather than cups 😞. I am not sure why it turned out this way; I truly followed the recipe to the letter.
just had this for our dinner tonight.....tasty, filling and plenty left for seconds....easy to make as well....next time i may swop out sausages for chicken, put a splash of white wine and some mushrooms as well.....definately cooking this one again...thanks
Pie or casserole - doesn't matter what you call it - it looks delicious and I am going to make it. Thank you for the clear easy to follow instructions and recipe x
Good afternoon Nicki, I would refer to this style "pie" my family would also refer to pie! This looks so delicious, and you know what, no sticky bottom ever with a top crust. Some complain if it's a double crust too much pastry, no satisfying some!! All that matters to us, it's delicious, fresh and hot and no uncooked pastry. Just make, bake and enjoy. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards.
I would serve it two ways. As you have delicious with some green beans cauli or broccoli. Or omit the potatoes add some celery with the carrots and serve with mashed potatoes and fresh veg.
Dont know if it's typical to my NE UK area, but we've always called a dish like this "pie crust" regardless of the filling underneath the pastry lid 🙂 I love this version with the sausages, never done that, added to my Saved Recipes, thank you 😃
Pie or casserole we are calling it tonights dinner, sausages and pastry out of the freezer and veg waiting to be prepped with a couple of portobello mushrooms extra. and cabbage on the side. wonderful timing as we have friends round for dinner.
This is a great alternative to the similar pie that I make with beef cubes instead of sausage. I MUST try this. It won't last long in my house though. Thanks, Nicky.
Grew up on 'Plate Pie' in Lancashire - Sweet or savoury the difference being that it was baked on a plate with a pastry top but without any pastry base ! It's a Pie !!!!! Reyt !!!! Ah lad - 'tis ! 🙃
Love all ur recipes they are so tasty & easy & says come back for more it’s so comforting lid on top or bottom or base & top it’s still a delicious Pie
Dictionary says that a pie is "a baked dish of fruit, or meat and vegetables, typically with a top and base of pastry". So this is a sausage and vegetable casserole with a pastry top. Heck, who cares - bet it tastes great.
I agree with you it's not a pie without a bottom crust. When we make apple crisp with oatmeal struesel on top we don't call it a pie either or when we make a cobbler or crumble.
A pie is topped with pastry, pastry lattice or potato, and it could have pastry underneath. A flan is not topped but can have pastry or veg underneath. A casserole is a thickened stew cooked in the oven and dough balls if wanted. A stew cooked saucepan or oven crooked and not known for thickening unless by adding potatoes. I’m sure others will vary.😊 And a soup is yummy too!
Love this! I’ve made this a few times now! I did have to boil the potatoes for a bit before putting in the mixture as the first time I did it the potatoes didn’t quite cook Also I changed It a bit for myself as I’m vegetarian and I used quorn sausages and vegetable broth! Soo good yum!
Hey there, just made this and a few of your others the last weeks. Thanks for the inspiration and carefully produced instructions, really, it's great. Have a great Xmas✌️
A modern pie. 😂 not too much pastry and easy to make. My homemade chicken pies, at least two vegs included, are made the same (puff pastry on top) and it’s great. No soggy bottom 😁. Your recipe as usual is great, flavour and vegs too as in healthy and it’s inexpensive. A Recipe great for flavour and our times. Thank you and well done 👏👏
pie or cassarole...who cares yummy yummy. there is a mustard soup in the north of holland you need to look at cooking...it is beautiful and tasty and filling....
any advice on what pork sausage to use....i find they are extremely disappointing these days....although morrison pork sausages are nice...im thinking of proper exspensive butcher sausages for this reciepe....what do you think
A pie should have a top and base. At our local pub they serve what they call a Pot Pie. Small caserole dish with a crusty pastry topping. Deelish. So yes it is a pie. A pot pie.
At first I thought the same as you: 'No it's not a pie, no pastry bottom' then I thought of Shepherds Pie and Cottage Pie - they only have a top - now I'm really confused! It's a lovely hearty dish though Nicki.
Id call it a pie..that no pastry base is jusr circumstantial. My chucken pies never have a oastry base. Austerity food..maybe!?. However just hearty simple stuff. Puff pastry not needed..suet crust would work or just shortcrust pastry. Meat and pitato pie worth looking at..using bay leaf flavouring... Really good peasant food.
Will try this! I think it's a pie...if it's got a pastry lid it's a pie to me. I grew up on potato pie (I am from Lancashire) and that's mince, onions, potatoes, carrots and a crust (served with pickles) and that pie was the only reason I grew. So yes, this is a pie 😊
Would you call this a pie??
Being from the US Midwest, I would call this a single crust pot pie. It looks delicious whatever you call it!
I make my pies with only a crust on top so I would call this a pie.
If the contents aren't fully enclosed in pastry, its not a pie Looks really nice though.
I'm perfectly OK with this being called a pie. There are many people here in the US that only put a top crust on chicken pot pie as well.
It's a pastry topped casserole.
Also known as a lie not a pie!
It looks nice but the sauce could do with being a little thicker for me and I don't like whole grain mustard so I'd leave that out.
This dish is so UK/British. In a million years you would never find this on any menu here in states, and that's why I love your channel :)
Aaaww thank you
It immediately made me think of the pub food I have enjoyed when visiting the U.K.
I certainly haven't seen a decent home country pie here in the Netherlands. That looks gorgeous
@@richardneilan2392 it is a proper pub meal that
Yes, we do make a mean pie here in the UK I must say. Our Steak & Kidney Pies are To Die For (not literally!!). x
I’m in the southern US and we wouldn’t consider anything without a bottom crust a pie, but that’s a regional “thing”.
We are going to try this recipe with what we call country sausage because it looks delicious.
I prefer a whole pie too!
To ALL those whinging that it’s NOT a pie… look it up …IT IS 🇬🇧
Scotland's famous steak pies has no bottom base....and anyone who has tasted them.....don't care, they're just so delicious!
I wouldn’t call it a pie - no base! It looks absolutely delicious - mouthwatering!
Thank you 😋
Pot pie.
It looks delicious. Whenever I have sausage and a biscuit together I add mustard to break up the fattiness of the sausage. This looks so good.

I'd call it a pie but frankly I'd call it anything you want for a bite! Looks delish
I love love love this recipe and I don’t mind calling either way. I’m gonna make it because it looks so delicious and I’m gonna call it a sausage pie. Thank you for your thoughts and your inventions that’s teaching me ideas to present my children and hubby. Have a blessed day
Just made this. Fabulous recipe. Halved the quantities as there are only two us but still worked out brilliantly. Thanks a million for this.
Just added this to our family menu for Friday or Saturday. Looks absolutely bangin' Now added to my "Food" playlist many thanks
Hope you enjoy
Looks delicious 😋 I would call it a pastry topped casserole.
Tomorrow I am making apple pie with pastry top and bottom.
😘❤️🏴🇬🇧
Hope you enjoy
It is a PIE.. it’s only a tart if it has no top..😊🇬🇧
"This pie should easily serve six people" Not in my house it won't lol
LOL Mine too
Like you I'd call it a caserole with a pastry lid so no one is disappointed lol.
I would also stir in some chopped fresh herbs like parsley before putting on pastry, that's just my preference.

Your recipes are absolutely epic!! Going to make this next week 🤩 Love from Ireland 😁
Awesome! Thank you!
This is a recipe i would love to tryout. The sausage and potatoes with the yummy creamy sauce😋. I would call it a creamy stuffed pie😁

I don't really care what you call it. It looks delicious and just the thing for this time of the year.
Thank you, I LOVE cooking at this time of the year 😋

Simple low cost easy to make wholesome food…lovely.

Cooked this yesterday and I have to say it is one of the tastiest sauces I have ever tried, would work well with chicken too imho. Thank you 😊
It would be a pie in our house and still delicious with any other name. 😜👌
I agree with you it's not a pie without a bottom crust. When we make apple crisp with oatmeal struesel on top we don't call it a pie either or when we make a cobbler or crumble.
Here we call that an Apple Crumble! 🍎 🍏 😊

Absolutely I would call it a pie anything with crust on it is perfect. All you need now there's some cider and garlic bread 😋
It's a sort-of-a-pie, not that it matters; looks delish 😋
That looks lush. Perfect for the dark UK evenings
Another delicious meal idea Nicky. Thank you. I’ve got your cookbook in my Amazon basket, can’t wait to try your recipes. 😋x
Aaaww thats so nice thank you.
I am not a mustard fan, but i am so going to try this pot pie. Is different and looks delicious.
Hey there, just made this and a few of your others the last weeks. Thanks for the inspiration and carefully produced instructions, really, it's great. Have a great Xmas✌️
Its homemade Fray Bentos pie.......looks lovely ....👌😁
Love this channel ,only started cooking from watching this channel , easy to follow, your great thanks.
Beautiful recipe and stunning chef 😍
That recipe is really adaptable to making it purely vegetarian, ie. just substitute mushrooms for sausage ect.
❤ Winter comfort food.
It really is!

What I would call it? How about YUMMY!!!!
Not a pie, but looks delicious :) (pies have pastry under and over..... but then there's cottage pie and shepherd's pie... hmmm)
Oh yeah baby that’s a pie!!! Stunning looks delicious will be making this for sure! Also could swap for say chicken and leek!!
Love this. Easy, I would add even more sausage. It's a pot PIE.
I would call it a pie but I am from the UK.
Would I be able to make individual small ones Nikki as I live on my own ?
💕😊
I agree with you BUT I wouldn't have found it if it was in with "Casseroles". Definitely going to give it a try it looks amazing. Thank You.
Got to give that a go ! And definitely a covered casserole 👍
Nicky thank you….i think its like a pot pie as it has no base. But anyway whatever it is, it looks yummy. Thank you. Much love from south africa
Not a pie, but looks lovely. Thanks for sharing it.
What we call a Pot Pie. It looks lush
I'm from Cornwall and I would call it pastry topped sausage stew. Looks delicious.
This looks delicious and yeah i agree 100%. If it hasnt got pastry on the bottom its not a pie. Regardless im still going to make this 👍
Looks amazing and will certainly be trying it when the weather cools a little.
Pie is pastry on top regardless of bottom. Tart if pastry only on bottom. Pie if both.
The heck with my cholesterol, I’m making this pie! 😋😋😋
I'm with you, as a Lancastrian NOT a pie but still very delicious 😋 thanks
Going to try this, and let's just call it.... ready to eat:)
Looks really yummy but I’m like you it’s a casserole with a lid. A pie is not a pie unless it has top and bottom crust ❤
Hi Nicky - am from north west like you and I’d say a pie!😊
Looks delish…no matter what it’s called!
Looks delicious 😋 let's call it a casserole pie 😁
I like that 😋
Can’t wait to try this pie looks so comforting , thanks for sharing 💕
Hope you enjoy
Would call this a pie topper to be fair, but cassarole with a pie lid also works.
Eggwash can be repkaced with milk wash.
pie or cassarole...who cares yummy yummy. there is a mustard soup in the north of holland you need to look at cooking...it is beautiful and tasty and filling....

yes, i wanted to try making a meat pie for a while now, i think this is a good one to try out!

Yes. I’d call it a pie. Your awesome! Just saying.
Oh thank you!
I don’t think it’s a pie but I save it under savory pie in my paprika app , mind boggling I know 😂
Tried this 'pie' - it's sensational. Next time can you make herby dumplings to go in a dish like this please? Thanks so much, as always. x

Deffinately a stew with a lid on, still tasty though!
