Thank you for a glimpse into his life.

I read this book as I was recovering form a difficult surgery and what a gift it was. It took me away from my pain and transported me from a bland hospital room into many other worlds. Thank you Anthony for your humility and for not giving up on this book!

I live in Boise, Idaho and absolutely love McCall and Payette Lake. Anthony is SO right about libraries. They saved me during my childhood in Washington D.C. I hid in that library and lived through books. It's what turned me into a writer - and I still read voraciously! His "All the Light We Cannot See" is one of my top five favorites and now I can't wait to read "Cloud Cuckoo Land". Thanks for this great interview!

I just saw this on air a few moments ago and he made one of many points, one that woke me up is to list the characters in the story. I have been working on something and not even once I did a “Roll Call” on who the people are! I wrote small synapses of their personalities of the main characters but not everyone. I also like that he had been writing stories at the same age as I began myself.

Starting with "Cloud Cuckoo Land" as an introduction to Anthony Doerr's writing didn't work for me and I gave up after about sixty pages. Then my wife finished "All the Light We Cannot See" and recommended it so I thought what the heck? As a 67 year old lifetime reader it's one of the most brilliant pieces of writing I've ever read. It's grounded and realistic. The writing flows naturally and has such a depth of description that I'm simultaneously mesmerized and terrorized by the events of this World War 2 novel.
What is life like for the average person after the crazies take over? I believe this novel explains where the majority of us would find ourselves. It gives us reason after reason not to buy into the bombastic rhetoric of those who believe the creed of power that might makes right and rules don't apply if they don't win. This novel gives me page after page of incentive to cherish the simple everyday life lived in a functioning society where differences of opinion can be discussed with neighbors and in the end the shared belief in our community and the rule of law outweighs the differences we might have.
I will be trying "Cloud Cuckoo Land" again after "All the Light". Though it seemed difficult and daunting the last time I tried somehow the thought of missing out on what this novel may contain are a great incentive for me to put on my boots and start climbing the mountain. I have a feeling the view might be amazing!

This is absolutely beautiful - a full, rich, poignant, deeply moving book. Every child has an impossible challenge. Every one is a hero. This world is the actual cuckoo land; and finding the sanity through love, nature and art is the healing.

Is it a coincidence that he mentions "I was spinning plates" when the title of the book is Cloud Cockoo Land, when Thom Yorke in Radiohead sings "I live in Cloud Cockoo Land" in their song "Like spinning plates" ? Do we have another fan here? 🙂

What is the drawing at 3:23 called? I see that it is an outline of sorts with the main characters integrated into the outline. Is there a book or class that talks about this drawing?

Actually, it was coined by the Greek comic dramatist Aristophanes (circa 450-385 BC) in The Birds.
