The enduring popularity of artist Bob Ross

  • In the 1980s and ‘90s Bob Ross hosted the public television series “The Joy of Painting,” until his death in 1995 at age 52. But ever since, the artist’s instructions in how to paint “happy little trees” have only grown more popular. Correspondent Lee Cowan looks back at the canvas of Ross’ career and the big picture of his life lessons.

Some of my high schools students would put Bob Ross videos on while studying. I saw them do this in the library one day and asked if they knew who he was (because I watched him with my mom when I was their age) and why they chose him. They said that his voice calmed then down and allowed them to focus. Bob Ross' influence is multi-generational and not just in painting.

I'm so grateful for all the Bob Rosses of the world--someone to give you a gentle nudge to do the things you didn't think you could do. In a world of chaos and stress, you hear that calm, gentle voice that says, it's going to be ok--there are no mistakes, just happy accidents and helps us to see the world as it could or should be. A happy little world where beauty lives.

He hated his hairstyle on the show, but they made him keep it because it became part of his brand. The show had a low budget when they started and they decided it was cheaper to have his hair "permed" than for Bob to have a short haircut that would need to be cut for every episode.

Very true! Mr Alexander was also a warm and wonderful man, as well as a great presenter and teacher. We saw him do a painting at a mall in Nashua, NH and afterward signed autographs and encouraged budding artists who flocked there that night. He came into the limelight late in life so did not have as long of a career on PBS, but was the original and inspired many as well, including Mr. Ross, of course!

Bob Ross's current popularity has to do with a yearning to return to a simpler, gentler time. Back in the 1980s and 90s most communities had many versions of Bob Ross, local eccentrics and artists who taught at the local high school, college or night school, middle-aged hippies just floating through the world softly encouraging those around them. People like him are more afraid to be out in the world today, afraid that they'll be mocked, harassed, dismissed, not taken seriously, assumed to have an ulterior motive or agenda, snarked at. Seeing a man like that in a simpler time like that before most of the internet or social media is an antidote to all the sarcastic cynicism, selfishness, "bro" toxic masculinity and extreme aggression celebrated in our society today.

In my first semester of college I wrote about Bob Ross for my Philosophy of Art term paper. I said that the real artistic value of Ross was in his performance rather than the paintings themselves, pretty as they may be. For example, if you watch Bill Alexander's show (he mentored Ross), it's much less heartwarming and encouraging, yet both shows teach virtually the same technique. The reason you know Bob Ross' name and not Bill Alexander's is because Ross' performance makes the show. Even if you find his paintings banal or kitch (like much of the art world did), you surely must feel something when hearing Bob tell you that you can do anything. It's that performance that immortalized him. I got an A+ on the paper

It makes one wonder if any of the great painters could do what Bob did in not only teaching you how to paint but do it in a way that wouldn't make you feel bad about yourself. As the producer said he gave the watchers license not just in painting but in life as well.

Who doesn't love Bob Ross! He inspired me to grab my first canvas and the rest is history. I love Him, and I want to go to see his resting place in Gotha FL to say thank you Bob! I went to his little school in New Smyrna fl and they said to me That he was the same Bob on and off TV an authentic man with Carisma and Good Heart. Bill Alexander was who got him started, he had a show and then Bob too was given that opportunity and I believe Bill got a little jealous you know the saying 'The Student became the Master' Bill was good too and deserves credit although I say that Bob had it in him and he just needed confidence. Bill was a bit loud his voice was not soft at all, and would not put Babies to sleep like Bob Ross did with his soothing voice, Even I by just watching and listening to him fell asleep, So I decided to record him and watch later when I was wide awake, and so it was easier to follow him since I could stop the video when I was painting. I tell my Husband that one day I'm gonna be in heaven painting with Bob 😉

Part of the “chill/love” trinity of Bob Ross, Mr. Rogers, and Steve Irwin.

Don't forget William Bill Alexander. He started the wet on wet technique and predated Bob. He painted on PBS too. Both are legends.

Bob Ross deserves a presidential medal 🏅of freedom! If Mr Rodgers was able to get it he should too! America needs more bob ross like people! Maybe then this country could get back to a sense of peace and less chaos!

Anyone who grew up in the 80's was partially raised by Bob Ross. He is an American treasure.

The curator is right! It is in the self confidence, not in the painting. Brilliant.

I didn’t really care for his art but I sure did love his positivity, and the world can sure use some of that positivity right now.
