I Goofed, Following TOO CLOSE!

  • I was coming to my exit and got TOO CLOSE behind the FedEx truck. It left me no outs when the tire tread came out from under his truck. The noise at the end was part of the plastic hanging down. It also broke the wire to my right fog lamp. I was able to pop the plastic back into place but will have to get bigger screws to attach it back. And then reattach the wires to my fog lamp.
It is humbling to admit your mistakes.

You're lucky it didnt slash your tires, usually they are steel belted. Very long time ago (mid 90s) I was travelling on I95N from SC back to DE on a Sunday, hit tire fallout, slashed my tire. You know what its like to find a tire repair shop in SC on a Sunday that's open back then? Near impossible in the days before cellphones, let along any way to call for help.
Had a can of fix-a-flat, used it, found a place, but by did they get mad at me, claiming I never told them about that stuff before they pop the tire from the rim.
Oh well, always try to avoid tire remains, learned a lesson there. 🙂

I know what you mean. I was very lucky. The Lord blessed for sure on this one.

I wouldn’t say you did anything wrong, looks to be safe following distance. Just unfortunate that the tire on the truck blew and you had nowhere to go. I thought you had gotten a flat but apparently not Guessing some minor cosmetic body damage though.

It caught part of the trim under my front bumper and broke the wires to my right after-market fog light. I did have to remove it eventually. I was in the wrong place when it blew. Had I been going slower I would have tried swirving but at 70 I don't make any quick moves.

    That was painful.

Fortunately, plastic trim was the only damage.

A mistake that didn't cost you the truck, but thanks for posting, a really useful lesson. My only observation - and this is for people generally - 0:21 be careful running off the driving line. The amount of nails, screws etc that get thrown there as the cars "clean" the running lane is quite something.

I was taking the exit so the timing really sucked with the blowout. Had it blown 5 seconds earlier or 10 seconds later I would have missed it.

@@CometDashcam Yes: I watched it and thought it was bad luck. And, it's not difficult to close down the distance when your coming of at a junction especially behind trucks. As I say thanks for posting as it will make me be a bit more mindful of that in future.
Yes it sucked, and yes it's annoying, but at least that was the worst of it.

One car length for every ten miles per hour

3 seconds is more accurate. At 70 miles per hour, that’s roughly the length of a football field. 7 car lengths would be about half that, not nearly enough.

Good you admitted to driving too close. Sometimes one needs a reminder. I always leave a big distance till someone comes into the gap
