WILD CAMPING at the DEVILS KITCHEN in Snowdonia, Wales, UK

  • We went wild camping in snowdonia and set up our wild camp at Devil's Kitchen. This is our first uk wild camp of the year and we were so excited. Wild camping in Wales is great, especially if you get in the mountains and the weather is nice.
    I'm trying out my new wild camping gear and I've got some great camp stove meals to test out too. I'll be using my Naturehike Cloud Up tent to sleep in.
    Devils Kitchen is located at the base of Y Garn and Glyder Fach. It is a stunning location and well worth a visit. Wild camping in wales doesn't get much better than this. The Devil’s Kitchen is located behind Llyn Idwal nestled within Cwm Idwal in the Ogwen Valley.
    Wild Camping at Devils Kitchen was an unforgettable experience. Wild camping cooking with my mates testing our our new wild camping gear with incredible views across snowdonia and good weather made it a great weekend wild camp.
    Remember wild camping in the uk is technically illegal outside of scotland and dartmoor. However, if you pitch your backpacking tent up late, leave your wild camp early and clear up your rubbish and leave without a trace it is usually tolerated.
    4 wild campers is quite a big number but we are very respectful and stay away from other people who have chosen to go wildcamping uk.
    On the Friday we went hiking in snowdonia and hiked up Y Garn. After our wild camp in wales we we hiking up both Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr.

    Don’t shoot the messenger but you really shouldn’t be camping in Cwm Idwal nature reserve - it’s a SSSI designated area which comes with increased levels of protection than what is generally the case, including a strict no camping stipulation

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be fair, I think we were outside the SSSI, away from the water and out the back at Devil’s Kitchen. We would never camp in a SSSI on purpose. All I can say is we certainly weren't the only ones there and we left without a trace and made no disturbances during our brief visit. Wild camping is illegal in most parts of the UK so it’s really hard to please everyone.

    • @WildAstro
      @WildAstro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@BackpackingUK that’s not quite the case mate. While you’re right (ish) about the legalities of wild camping Cwm Idwal really is a no-go area as it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to some unique species that are found there. Once you’re up and out of the Cwm it’s fine but it’s the only area where rangers really will ask you to move on from every time. Like Andy said, don’t shoot the messenger, but camping in Cwm Idwal will definitely do the wild camping cause no favours at all. 👍🏼
      As for not being the only ones there; as TH-camrs you have an additional responsibility to be aware of these issues and not promote camping in areas where we really shouldn’t be camping.
