    Very helpful. I’ve come across a lot of traditional Scottish music ( some from collections dating 1740 ) written for piano in B flat. It’s not my strongest key on my fiddle, so I’ve decided to select tunes which I know well, in say G , and transpose the dots into B flat, to improve my sight reading and playing skill. Lots of my guitarist friends just shift their capo on fret to suit their voices…..well they think it suits their voices 😈…and expect me to accompany them !!

    I'm trying to transpose mad world using this method. Going from eb major to g major (c minor to e minor in the case of relative minors since mad world is clearly minor). But when I see the sheet music the first chord in the song is f minor in eb major and the corresponding degree in g major would be A minor. Instead though in g major they say the correct chord is e minor add9, (capo on the first fret) I do the same method using the relative minors and using your method the minor degrees line up with the major one's.

    Great for the music theorists but quite time-consuming to learn. A quick workaround is to get a keyboard with a transpose button to take it up/down a third, fifth or whatever. Keep the same chord shapes and find the best key for your voice.

      That's fair, but learning to transpose because much more intentional when you learn about how it works.

    Why does the 7th chord start with F# rather than F?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first row, from left to right, is the key of G Major. The seventh scale degree in that key is f#, not f. Therefore, the chord based on the seventh scale degree begins with an f#.
      I hope that helps!

    the question that I have and I don't seem to find someone talking about is to what key should i transpose a song to be more practical for an alto to play it? because some songs are almost impossible to play on there original key or they would sound weird, too low or too high or very difficult with the way the notes are laid out on the alto sax

    Does anyone know what it's called when you transpose a melody or lick around the modes of a key?
    I.e. if the chords were 2 5 1, and I want to transpose down a step the chords become 1 4 7 and the melody comes down appropriately.

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're moving the melody around the various modes but remaining in the same key, you are basically executing a melodic sequence that is diatonic. It's a diatonic sequence. If the chords are moving along with said sequence, that's just appropriate harmonization for the sequences. In that instance, you are definitely being 'modal' but that does not necessarily indicate a key change.
      Jeff

    • @FloydManFloyd
      @FloydManFloyd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeffRolka thanks a lot for the reply, yes definitely not changing keys but I thought there might be a name for it nonetheless. It's something I hear bach doing all the time as well as other composers but particularly bach and in Indian classical music too. Cheers

      The major equivalent to Cm is Eb and to Am it's C. I recommend learning the circle of fifths, then you'll know what major keys are parallel to minor keys and what chords/note are going to be flats(b) or sharps(#)

    I have played the piano for a lot of years. But it's been awhile. I studied piano for 13 years. Now here is my question. I have not play for awhile but the past year have been playing the keyboard (organ selection) with 2 other keyboardist. They care constantly transposing. Is this necessary? I mean transposing to the point to where it's ridiculous. I understand transposing for the singer. I get that. But for one instance the one keyboardist admitted not being able to play in flats. I thought that's it...! She is transposing to her liking. Your thoughts.

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, have you asked them about it? I find it odd that they would transpose instead of playing in keys with flat symbols in the music. Generally, having to transpose would be considered more difficult than reading a key signature but they may have their reasons. There are a lot of reasons why one might transpose, in addition to accommodating a vocalist, perhaps they have something else entirely in mind. Good conversation starter!

    I understand the theory, but imagine I will be playing with a guitarist/singer and he sings fairly low compared to the original chords, but in the meantime I want to match up his chords but playing with a cd.sometimes I am going down 11 half steps!!!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it helps, keep in mind that in music, it's sometimes easier to go up, and then drop the melody line by an octave, than thinking of it as descending by 11 semi tones.
      Consider, if you were in C Major, and descended 11 semi tones, you would arrive at D-flat Major. You could, more easily, in my opinion, move up one semi tone, and arrive at the same key. The remaining task there, in the context of singing, is to then find your starting pitch an octave lower and you're ready to sing the melody.

      Jeff
