    Tbh the AE86 is a legend because of drift king Keiichi. His drift tape is what inspired movies like fast and furious, and the modern day car culture. Most people know it because of memes but in terms of cars, it like the grand daddy of modern day car culture and drifting.

      @@dylanmontealegre1914 Duncan isn't BS as far as I know. I've had my car for almost a year now and I've had no problems. When I purchased my car it was from the tennessee location and as I far as I could tell, all of the cars in their inventory were high quality. I will say though, Duncan very much overcharges for most of their cars. The cheapest way to import a car into the states would be to buy from auction in Japan. Although, the downside to this is that it can be a bit risky at times since you can't inspect the car in real life. On the upside though you can save quite a bit of money if you do it right. The best company for buying from auction would be pacific coast auto. They've been around over over 10 years and probably have the best reputation. If you do decide to go with an importer that already has an inventory stateside avoid Japanese classics llc/JdmClassicsLLC like the plague. They were exposed from doing some very shady things semi recently. I can link to the posts detailing what they did if you would like. So basically if you want to be able to get the car immediately and inspect it in real life go for an importer that already has the car stateside. You will end up paying a little more for the convenience though. If you want to save money, buy from auction but you will have to play the waiting game and fill out a lot of paperwork.

      Well, it was decent. The Sprinter's light weight is what made it fast. And it had great handling. Fun car, in my opinion. I saw an authentic AE86 a few months ago when I was at a Sacramento car show. It brought back memories of watching Initial D.

      There's really not much reason to want an AE86 over the alternatives unless you like Initial D probably a bit too much. About the only thing about it I find really appealing is the engine note.
      Sure, there's a lot of stuff it does well, and it may cost a bit less than a Miata if it weren't for the fan demand driving up prices on the limited supply, but if what you're after is an older, cheap RWD car that handles pretty well, there's far better alternatives out there.

      @philspaghet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +249

      It's a total underdog machine. But look into the details, the engine has been tuned for years by his father, the suspension specially set for the mountain roads, everything is optimized. The only thing it doesn't have is power, but that just comes with age, old cars get old, new cars are better. So to answer your question, yes, he won in spite of it BUT it has ALL the business street racing (not to mention success in rally, WTCC, pro drifting, etc.)

      Carbon Bonds
      Are you even at all informed about this car or are you just another one of those weaboofags who'd pay massive amounts of money for a underpowered ecobox? The weight distro is around 60/40 and is has a terrible tendency of oversteering because of the live axle in the rear. The front suspension isn't very refined either with an oldschool mcpherson setup. It's hellafun to drive on backroads or even on the track but it's not some sort of godmachine, far from it actually. The S2k or even a miata would smash it in any possible way on a track. It's sure great entry level car for drifting but there are better cheaper ways that get more power. 4A-GEs are NA so getting big power figures out of that is pretty expensive.

    • @CPD0123a
      @CPD0123a 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      edge21str 1st: You act like its tendency for oversteer is a bad thing. That's THE POINT OF THE CAR. Just like the GT-86 that is its new grandson. Yes, in actual races, Tak would have lost every time because drifting slows you down. Yes, in actual races, drifting is terrible on the car and the tires. Yes, in actual races, drifting can kill you. However, on a "fun" track day meant to just go out and have fun, there's nothing more fun than swinging out the rear end, and that's what it's for.
      2nd Of course it's got an old front suspension--that's why they sell upgrade kits.
      3rd Yes, you are right on the money about the engine, and even a Mk. II Celica-Supra (the big daddy to the 86) is cheaper here in Amurica. While I love the Trueno, I would most likely instead have the CS Mk II because of the bigger engine, cheaper price and it has the same styling, if not better.
      4th At least they're not yet another "track tuned" beemer E36 with no give in the suspension and an insufferable twat behind the wheel. That said, I sorta hate how every single trueno has to be given the panda package. (such as this, which is such an obvious repaint) FOR GOD'S SAKE, HAVE SOME INDIVIDUALITY AND CREATIVITY, PEOPLE!!! It's like how every Delorean is the BTTF car, even if it doesn't have the kit, and every caddy or pontiac hearse or ambulance from before 1977 has been turned into an Ecto. It's cool on a nerd level, unoriginal on a car level, and not honest to the car.
      (BTW I watched the anime because I loved the car, not I loved the car because of the anime. I'm backwards on that one.)

    I usually like your reviews but you have gone about it all wrong for this car. You need to understand what this car means to the car culture.Sure its slow by today's standards. But 128 hp in the early 80's ? How is that even bad? That was amazing from a 1.6 L engine back then. Especially on an engine that revs to 8000 rpm. This was a car you could daily drive AND have fun. IT IS A FUN CAR! You didn't even mention that in your review. Where today can you buy a 18K-22K brand new, japanese reliable, RWD, fun car which is practical to drive every day. No where, they don't make them. That is what this car represented. That is why every car enthusiast wanted one.
    And the balance of the car made it ideally suited to the touge and high speed drifting done by street racers in japan. No questions, for its time and for its status it is the best car ever made.

She loved it. When I showed it to a local stereo shop, they offered me a full-time job on the spot. It's doesn't say S13 in the VIN, wanna know why? Because Japan doesn't have VIN numbers, and you don't call an 86 an 86 because of the VIN, 86 is the chassis code not an a VIN

    • @crojalwol
      @crojalwol 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I mean, "cartoon" is used for animated shows, while "anime" (outside of Japan) is used specifically for Japanese animated shows. So, animes can be called cartoons, but not the other way around. It's just that cartoons have a pretty negative stigma because most cartoons in the west are lame and/or for children. So, since some people don't want animes to be put in that box, they don't want to call them that. But really, they are cartoons. And that's ok. There are some great cartoons in the west too, like Code Lyoko or Avatar. Rather than contributing to the "cartoon is children bullshit" stigma, we should work on making people understand that animated shows can be amazing and for all ages.
      Calling cartoons "anime" if they aren't from Japan is a different story. It's true that, in Japan, "anime" simply means animation. But people outside of Japan wanted to distinguish Japanese comics and animations from the rest, because Japanese industry has basically created it's own culture that goes far beyond "it's just animation", "it's an animation style" and things like that. So they started calling Japanese animation "japanimation", then the term eventually became "anime". "Anime" doesn't have the same meaning inside and outside of Japan. But the meaning outside of Japan doesn't affect Japan, so the word-stealing isn't really a big deal. Using the Japanese word for animation is basically just a tribute to the language.

    one thing i never get while discussing or seeing someone review an ae86 is the idea that its supposed to be an amazing car. in the the show itself the ae86 is stated to be not the best car. its merits are stated but the whole idea is that Takumi (the protagonist of initial d) is a really skilled driver. even the car itself gets upgraded to the ae86 turbo because it was to slow to keep up with one of the other characters car and Takumi was beat.

    Right hand drive lesson of the day: Get one of those reacher claws old people use to pick up the remote when they drop it. Tape a large plastic cup to the end. Not only can you use these at toll booths, they're handy at drive throughs. Cup servers dual purpose for getting change back...and getting your drink.

      Even if you call it an AE88, it's still an an AE86 to be honest. The engine is a slightly different tune yes and the bumpers are different but overall the car is indentical

    Just one side note, the AE88 actually is mostly the same car but it has a small handful of chassis improvements. The engine is also the same but it's been slightly detuned due to US emissions regulations at the time of its release.

    Can I just say...
    As a kid who grew up with the Initial D cartoon...
    I like it, and hate it too.
    It was probably due to this fucking cartoon that got people into believing the R33 Skyline GT-R was a ... what was it? Oh yeah.
    "A disappointment"
    "Heavy"
    "Slow"
    Bullshit. It was MUCH faster than the R32 Skyline in the Nurburgring.
    It was the first production sports car by Nissan to break the 8-minute barrier on the Nurburgring.
    The R34 Skyline which precedes it, was only a few tenth of a seconds faster than the R33 on the Nurburgring. But that's only in the perfect condition. In most cases, the R33 and R34 would be absolutely similar in terms of performance.

      ***** Mine would be the R33, then it's a 50/50 shoot-out between the R32 and R34.
      This is based on the JGTC years, when the R33 Skyline had to go up against the McLaren F1.

    • @supraevo95
      @supraevo95 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer the R33 over the R32, and the R34 over all of them. But I still love them all the same. I just can't stand when people say the R33 is shit just because they read about some idiots saying it is.

    • @s2korpionic
      @s2korpionic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Could you show a link on these tuners that are disappointed with the R33? I've seen plenty amazing R33s from tuning companies like APEXi, Greddy, HKS and a few others I've forgotten. Probably Top Secret and Veilside.
      Your point on size and weight makes no sense to me. Size-wise, there's no discernible difference compared to its brethren. As for weight, how is it that it's more difficult to remove weight from the R33 compared to the other two?
      And the R34 being "such an improvement"... Yeah, from my experience, I'm not buying it. Best Motoring show and RL experience shows that the improvements are... minimal at best, especially when tuning is involved.
      With that said, this just makes the R33 more impressive than the R32/R34 simply because it's closer to being a grand tourer than a sports car.

    • @supraevo95
      @supraevo95 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're talking about the R32 being light... That may be true for the GTS-T. But the GTR is at least 1400 kg or about 2800-2900 pounds heavy.In comparison, the R33 weighs about 1500kg and the R34 too. These 100 kg or 200 pounds or whatever don't make that much of a difference.

    ae86 the car who train the driver, and its true. the facts that its not as fast as modern cars or having all modern electronics doesnt write it off as a good car at its time. i learned to drive using a corolla DX and i've got to say that it far from today cars feel, if you already spoiled by abs, electric steering, bigger cc engine and many systems that assist u while driving, i understand it will be very hard to enjoy the feel of this car, but to labeled this car is bad its just like hearing moonlight sonata and call it a bad music because u dont like classical music and only enjoy hip hop.

  • @Vyppaaa11

    Two things
    1:Chassis code does not have to mach a vehicles VIN, this is especially common with Toyotas.
    2:He talks about power output like it is an actual mechanical difference. Everything about the engines themselves is the same. Bore, stroke, compression, cam dimensions, intake runners et cetera all identical. The reason the power output is different is due to the north american version using an AFM instead of a MAP sensor. The AFM was more restrictive but slightly improved emissions.

      Vyppaaa11 He’s right. For example, on a BMW 330Ci VIN, you don’t see “E46”, but rather “BN53”, which denotes an E46 330Ci.

      Hontoni Arigato agreed. Primarily a collector's item today, when similar, more modern cars like the S2000 or Miata can be had for cheaper and possess similar performance characteristics. (lightweight, low power, high rpm RWD).
      With some precision, even FWD econoboxes like the Civics and Mazda 3s can give some thrills.
      Not hating on the Corolla/Sprinter by any means. It's a fun car. I just wouldn't go out of my way to get one when other, cheaper choices exist.
