Definitely crochet your own top from 100% cotton! That’s the best way to learn more about fibers. 20% polyamide isn’t enough to make a top “stuffy” (especially a spaghetti top with an open weave), and instead what it does is give a little elasticity to the top so that it will hold its shape. Cotton woven like this will not hold its shape. If you stretch it, it doesn’t bounce back. Once you start crocheting and actually learn about fibers, you might discover that synthetics are not universally bad. Some are better than others, and have a role to play in clothing. I’d love to see your top when it’s finished! Good luck!

It was fun to see what I agree or don't agree on. I'm a large print enjoyer, don't mind stuffing moderately-puffy sleeves and will gladly go for large top half details (as a curvy pear with large hips - it helps to take attention away from them). I'm happy to see I'm slowly starting to get my own ideas on what I like, while still taking inspiration.
Also, about cotton knits - I haven't had too many but they were prone to losing shape, while my old synthetics don't look that different now. Maybe it's a quality issue or the fact I was machine-washing them, but I don't have enough data. I wonder what's everyone else's experiences with cotton knitted wear.

I am not a fan of cotton knitwear, it will loose shape and I find it heavy to wear. I like wool and kasjmir knitwear. I do like large prints too and I do not mind puffy sleeves.

You are so right about assessing the practicality of puff sleeves. A lesson I've learnt. Also agree with the warning re voluminous sweatshirts. I recently cut the sleeves off one, and that helped.

Where did you get the sleeveless button front merino ??? In a greyish colour???? Your content is so helpful at 67 years of age! I am finally wearing just what I feel good in!!!!!

That’s actually a part of an off shoulder ensemble that’s sadly past season. It’s actually not merino either. My favourite spots to find good merino pieces are Uniqlo and COS :)

The puff sleeves is such a good point. I love puff sleeves but over the years have come to realize I tend not to reach for them unless I know for sure I won’t need a jacket that day. And I bought the Francisco top from Sezane but ended up returning it for the same reasons you mentioned. It’s also quite long, and being a knit, would be impossible to tuck in.

I have a ban on buying t-shirts, I realized that I just don’t really wear them that much anymore. I think they’re boring and I prefer something similar, but with a V-neck and collar, like a cotton Polo neck top. On hot days, I wear tank tops much more anyway, “old arms” or not. No more jeans, either, I can’t stand wearing them. I’m more of a dress/skirt wearer, and I have a couple pairs of 501s for those occasions when nothing else will do. I just don’t like wearing denim, it’s hot, stiff, thick and rough. I prefer softer fabrics or knits. I’m not even buying a denim skirt this time they’re trending, I just purged my last denim skirts and jackets. The same goes for those cotton utility jackets that I had in several colors, they took up a huge chunk of closet space and I rarely wore them. I don’t dress as casually as most people do nowadays, I wear more like “business casual” most days. Most people where I live wear black or gray gym outfits everyday, all day, but that’s not my idea of physical comfort, they’re made of hot, sweaty polyester and super-tight elastane. Thanks, Helen❤

Hi Helen. Thanks for the tips. Another thing I often think is that I only want to buy just so many items that are limited to one season. I put all my summer things away for most of the year, and then every spring, I get excited about linens and summery colours, but I try not to buy too much seasonal stuff.
I like your Levi's. I think I should have sized up when I bought mine. I have the same ones. I like those Everlane pants too.

I know small prints are easy to style but I think this comes down to what body type you have and definitely when it comes to KIBBE body types. As a soft dramatic, I love bold prints surrounded by neutrals, as the small prints will really wash me out but I believe you're somewhere in the classic family so it makes sense you feel overhwelmed by big prints hehe
    Love Laura x

I’m a slender petite and I just bought a big-scale vaguely animal print, shirt dress from Anthropology. I know the print is huge for little me, but the all-neutral colors (shades of brown, a little black and white) chills it down and makes it work for me. Such “rules” like pattern scales are only suggestions, anyway, I think we should all just buy what makes us feel beautiful!🙂

  • @tracypatil8841

Helen I totally agree about pattern. The only pattern I wear is on Accessories and tonal pattern on a coat and nothing else. I have patterned summer dress and rarely wear it because I feel very loud in it!!
I love oversized but I only wear, if it has some sort of cinching in the waist. That way it doesn't look too much on my small frame. I can't stand pale, pastel colours so I never buy into the spring colours. You just always have such quality content. I learn so much. Thanks I appreciate all your hard work x

I am really struggling to find cute blouses that aren't polyester with long sleeves!
the advice about having items that can be layered also makes a lot of sense, I've fell in that trap too many times!!
i noticed that my wrists tend to get very chill and i can't wear my blouses or some tops until summer because the sleeves are only 3/4
I've become much more detail-oriented recently because the sleeve length is really a deal breaker for me, on top of the fabric quality

So true about synthetic knitwear! As someone who's always wearing knitwear, due to cold climate were I live, I no longer buy anything with less than 60% organic fabric. It just never lasts more than a few wears before starting to pile etc. Not worth it!

your videos are always so great Helen. I only wish in my 20's I knew a YT'er with quality videos like yours who is also similar to my body shape. I'm 41 now and have learned to dress my body and what to avoid overtime but I feel like I wasted some money in the process. I'm tall and curvy so I actually look much better in larger prints (and too fussy in small ones). I also need longer lengths to look hamonious so I go with maxi skirts and I look too dowy with simple or classic cuts and need drapes and more exaggerated details.
Btw I own a Lululemon Scuba from 2010 that I wear on heavy rotation to this day. The design back then was more form fitting which I preferred but still cozy. Mine still looks new :D

I love seeing some new filming setups, but I wouldn't keep all that filming equipment in your bedroom for work-life balance! In spring I always skip out on the trench coats because when it rains where I live, it pours, so a trench coat isn't going to do much.

Love your videos. I’ve been purchasing essentials you recommend from Uniqlo. I work at a school so I’ve been enjoying all the pieces. Plus I’m all about comfort and lightweight clothes so they’ve been my favorites. I’ve been wearing these pieces non stop! Do you recommend any button ups or blouses? I specifically want to find button ups that are darker colors. I tend to see many light colors but no darker blue or blacks. Any recommendations?

Puff sleeved anything, particularly dresses. I find them impossible to layer and it just doesn't look good with my proportions. Unfortunately, it's very hard to find any dresses without them and it has been for I wanna say the last 10 years. I also totally agree with you point about the length of shirts and tops. I like buying pieces that I can wear all year long with some adjustments in layering. Your style and your attention to detail are amazing!
