a Caucasian chick at work jokingly said to me "oh, you wearing your white girl hair today!" Referring to my natural hair being straightened. I gently told her that my hair is "black" every day whether it's twisted or straightened and to keep her foolish comments to herself. So, yes, this video is very necessary.

Brittany Alexander yea you just have to pull it because it scrunches up. You have to stretch it to actually see it's full length. I'm half black half white and I have extremely curly hair and it's gorgeous but I just get upset because it's up to my shoulders but if I stretch it out it's actually longer or when I straighten it lol.

She's not wrong. African hair is more brittle than European and Asian hair. That's why it appears that African hair grows shorter than other hair types despite growing at the same rate. Because your hair is more brittle and therefore more vulnerable to breakage.

Ppl are not born with background knowledge about natural black hair. If you don't want to explain it to them, then don't get mad when they appear "ignorant." This is not an excuse for being rude but you can expect ppl to know things the are not taught.

Ashley C. Yes, people aren't born with a background knowledge of natural black hair. But that doesn't give them the right to invade personal boundaries and privacy all because they're so curious. Add along the racial element, and it's recipe for disaster. When you don't respect that person's personal boundaries, don't ask and engage in the topic of hair differences, and don't be mindful of their feelings, of course they're going to get mad at the ignorant comments. Nothing wrong with being curious. But there is something highly wrong with being invasive, insensitive, and racist.

I'm white and would never say something so rude about someone's hair, it is part of who they are. And it in no way hinders them at work or anyone else. I am aware of how a black person's hair is cared for and the different hairstyles are something natural to them as different hairstyles are natural to everyone. It's no different from anyone else doing their hair (except a bit more work goes into it for some people). I like watching videos of different forms of care and styles of black people's hair. I don't know why I just do. My favorite hairstyle is the Afro because it reminds me of trees blooming in Spring which reminds me of Gaia the goddess of nature. Gaia is the ancestral mother of all life, which reminds me that all life started in Africa. My sister says I'm weird for thinking that, but that is just how my mind works.

" I was so shocked and offended . and then she starts to touch my hair and says "hey can I touch it?" . Might I say I had an extremely long talk with her about black natural hair and how it was really rude to ask some one "is that weave?" when you don't even know them. But she turned out to be a really nice person ,and now were friends,so I guess this was a "win win" situation because I got to educate some one about our hair while also making a friend.😊

I'm going to clear something up that I've seen in the comments. I'm noticing a lot of "I'm white and I don't do this" comments. I am also white and don't do this, but I recognize the importance of the video. See, denying that it happens doesn't solve the problem. You can't just let racism off with a free pass because pointing it out makes you feel bad. By watching, understanding, and appreciating the content of this video you'll be more likely to see these actions when they appear and more likely to try and stop them. You'll also pay closer attention to what you say and do.

I feel so blessed to have a manager than compliments the beads and the knots and the twists and the braids. Hearing these stories.. its just so discouraging. I am so sorry to all of you experiencing this.

"It's unprofessional" I hate that so much because I went to an interview with my hair natural and I got it on the spot. Plus at my current job I always get offered jobs because of my great customer service, appearance doesn't matter, it's all about how well you do your job.

Congratulations on getting the job with your natural hair. And yes, all that matters is how well you do your job.

      Actually it does.
There are statistics of whites with criminal records getting the same jobs blacks with college degrees don't.

I don't mind the touching either. It's when they don't ask and just stuff their hair in my fro without making sure I'm okay with it that bugs me.

I wanted to get one of those hair kit gift bags for my friend but I had no clear idea what I was suppose to buy her ( I wasnt sure how much stuff actually went into hair care for a women of color) and learned that the care and treatment that goes into washing and styling is VERY different from my own routine. And I have to give those women and men credit for what its worth cause I really dont know how I would be able to keep up. But Im glade Im learning about it cause I had so many questions as a kid to ask about black hair but was to shy to ask.

I've had more black girls and a few mixed ones ask me about my hair than white people. I had a mixed girl stick her hands directly in my puff one day. I didn't see it coming. She just did it. I tried so hard not to curse her out. PS: Why do the black women cartoons look so angry?

Being honest as well, I've had more black women tell me it looks unkept, I'm never going to get a job, it looks like you didn't style it, what you gonna do about those naps and more other races amazed when I come to work with my flat twists, totally amazed on who long it's getting since I cut it.
The only black people who like my naps are black men and other natural ladies...kind of weird that they paint it like only white people hate it or something. Out of all the styles I've had my hair in, my boyfriend (who's white) loves when I leave my hair in an afro lol

I have experienced all of this. Yes when I'm natural everyone wants to touch it. I went to my girlfriend's bridal shower I was throwing her and her friends and family some were black and they were all asking to touch my hair and wow how soft it looks and feels I felt like I was an exhibition that everyone's at the Museum looking and wanting to touch. I felt like I was on display. This has been my everyday life from work, schoo,l and just anywhere I'm at with natural hair. I have totally been asked to keep it straightened it's more acceptable or it makes them basically feel more relaxed.
