Last time I straightened my hair was 8th grade. My auntie burned the heck out of my hair. And it wasn't worth it because my hair puffed back up when i stepped outside (thanks to the humidity of Texas). I've just finished 10th and haven't used much heat on it (maybe blow dried a few times). My hair has never been happier.

Feonalilly yeah i never put products in it only shampoo and conditioner, no oils. I could only comb it when wet. I had it for about 3 years but cut it last July and had it short since.
What? I have to detangle mine every day...unless I put one of those awful sleeping caps on...
LaggySoldier I combed mine every day just with warm water and with water and shampoo maybe twie a week. sorry if any confusion, what i meant was that after having to comb your hair every morning before work/school and have it looking nice daily would make most people sick of it after a week.
meh not all natural hair is the same, even though I have tight curls I detangle it while washing and don't have to do it again for the rest of the week

KikiDva honestly I find it amazing how in 2016 we all can understand simple things like skin types (ie. dry/oily/combination/acne-prone skin. All use different products and have different needs) but suddenly when it comes to hair types.. it's some big mystery?? Girl, she was just being mean and nasty, trust me. I'm white and I know for a fact that TONS of white people DO NOT wash their hair every day. We do the exact same thing, just take a body shower (the only difference is that we usually don't use a cap, we just grab our hair in a bun or something).
I'm Native and Irish and I don't wash my hair everyday either! I have corse, dry hair, if I shampooed every day it would snap off! Who shampoos everyday?

lol i’m white and it still happens to me 24/7. My friends are all black and love to play with my “white” hair. I let them as they’re my friends, but it is annoying when they don’t ask or if a teacher just grabs my hair. I couldn’t imagine having to deal with that so often

I used to be tolerant about people touching my hair if they asked too, until one day I was wearing my huge Afro. It took me a while to get it the shape I wanted. I went to the mall with my mom and saw my friend and her mom. I went and gave my friend a hug then her mother, and as I was hugging the mom, she runs her fingers through my hair, scalp to ends. She continues to play with it saying "I love your hair it's so soft and everywhere!" Long story short, I had to walk around that mall with my hair looking a hot ass mess because a grown woman decided to just put her hands in my head (without even asking) and fuck up the work I put into it. It may have looked like it was everywhere but I can guarantee you every strand had a place. That was the last time I let someone touch my hair.

Im a grown woman and my mother always hated my, well at least it seems like it.
Everytime we meet its always a struggle. She is pushing me to get my hair permed and flat iron it. Everytime she looks at my hair she says eww to this sponge kink. I have 3c 4a hair and hers is something between 4a and 4c, but she always perm and put extensions over it. She never wear her natural hair, ever!
She says that it is not presentable, its not beautiful and no normal person would want to wear "this". She makes appointments for me to perm my hair without asking and I just don't go. She gets mad, call me stupid and an imbecile. She connects natural hair with laziness, lack of style and say that only people with no taste and money would want to walk with that in the head.
We fight because of that and I am so tired of it. Trying to talk or explain why I dont want a perm, she say that at least she is wearing real human and manageable hair on her head.

When people say "it would be so nice to see your hair straightened" I just reply "No, it wouldn't. I did it once, won't ever do it again. You won't ever see it, and be glad for my decision" (Sorry about any mistakes, English is not my mother language)

i really do not understand how someone hair can be unprofessional unless its a complete mess, but afro hair isnt messy , just because its puffy doesnt mean its not clean. and braids are the cleanest way you can style your hair. working people have always used braids in history because it keeps your hair tidy and clean.
I remember being asked "what's the point of this whole natural hair movement?" and "why black people gotta makes such a big deal out of everything?" I tried to explain to that certain person what my hair means to me and other people of my race and this woman began to go on about how "white people do the same thing", "we also go through a lot of hair damage", "we change our hair too", "our hair is also hard to manage", blah blah blah. She clearly took what I said wrong because I wasn't trying to point out the differences of our racial groups, just the personal struggles of mine. I literally gave up on trying to explain what pride my hair has and how it symbolizes years of struggle and oppression leading up to the triumph of today. How I keep my hair this way to embrace myself, my culture, and my roots. How over the years, what we all saw as beautiful or professional was the complete opposite of my natural hair type, and how nearly every little black girl destroyed their hair just to achieve society's portrayal of what beauty looks like. Some other people may not agree, but this is my interpretation of the natural hair movement. And it's a shame that some people will just never understand or sympathize with it...

In my school the black girls always get bullied for their hair even by the black boys. I mind my business but I always get my hair pulled so it physically hurts my scalp and I'm always getting asked if its real even when it clearly is. The white boys always tease us and tell us we have horse hair or snakes in our hair. One of them put chewing gum in my friends hair so she never had it natural again. There's this girl with weave and even the teachers talk about her hair. A white girl has weave but no one says anything to her they only do it to the black girls. No matter what style we have our hair in they always make fun of us.
That is so awful... are any teachers or whatever punishing them for it? That's harassment, especially the pulling and putting gum in the hair. This really shouldn't be happening :(

black hair is really diverse and all of them are so beautiful if it's maintained and properly taken care of.
Now if we could just get the whole of the black population to realise this.
The reason why black people are so sensitive about their hair is because Afro takes a lot of maintenance. Any small tampering will affect it, and it's hard to readjust it to the way it was before so if someone just comes and touches my hair, do you know how angry I would be? Very angry. Fixing it back can be a big problem, as you can see, it's thick, tough and huge just like a forest. Hard to maintain so just keep your hands to yourself.
I've never understood people who feel like they have a right to touch a complete stranger. e.g. people who touch pregnant bellies and Afro hair. Hell, when I was a toddler I had ringlets and adults literally used to come up and paw at it with my mum beside me going, "Um, excuse me, fuck off?" What in the world is wrong with people? Honestly.
Rainy Day yes! Exactly. When I was pregnant with my twin boys. I had strangers touch my belly. I am so uncomfortable with people invading my personal space. It was like torture for me. I also had people try touch my hair before. But I was quicker that time and dodged. Not so quick when I was pregnant. 😢

The girl who talked about parents relaxing their child's hair for so long that they don't know what their hair texture actually looks like, is literally me. I really thought my hair was naturally straight for a very long time but I've done so much research this past year, trying to find my hairtype and what products to use. I don't regret going natural❤
you don't have to be black to empathize with any of this. I admit, I was curious because I grew up in a country where there are only white ppl. when I did finally meet a black person for the first time, I was curious but it would never cross my mind to just put my hand on their head. it has nothing to do with hair, culture etc it's just proper manners.

Exactly... I feel they're making out to be something else. I find afros and natural hair the most beautiful and gorgeous. I have thick frizzy 7 layers of wavy natural hair and people teased me, touched, talked about my hair. Did I make it into something larger than it is? I'm white, I am half Persian but, they were being rude or intrigued or complimentary not racist. It's hair. End of story. I love the natural look but, there is a lot of pressure in the African-American/British community on weaves and trying to change your natural hair. So, do you what you prefer I guess.

The hair you're born with is your natural hair. The only way I can think of NOT having your natural hair is by either shaving it all off or wearing a synthetic wig. All hair is natural hair.

This is off the topic, but the worst is when you spend so much time "perfecting" your hair and you get in the car only to have it messed up by the process of getting in and out of the car, the headrest, and/or the roof of the car. Depending on my hairstyle, getting in the car can look like I'm playing a game of limbo.
I once yelled at this girl for touching my hair without asking also people would walk up to me and be like is that's your real hair as if I'm bald. I remember in fifth grade I wore my hair out and the kids at my school laughed and said your hair looks like an umbrella and me being at school was like ok just laugh with them I guess

My natural hair experience has been very positive. However, I do get asked why am I natural. That question is weird to me because I know other races of people dont get why do you wear your hair natural. Why is it that black people get that? Wearing our hair in its natural state needs to be seen as normal. These 4a spiral coils literally grow out my head the same was bone strait hair grows out of someone elses. I love seeing natural hair on my fellow sistas because in the past our ancestors were made to feel ashamed of it. It was even a law one time not to have it.

Kyla Darden yeah probably, i mean, all white people have ancestors that where black, i think being white was through evolution and being in colder areas, probably developed during an ice age, like if you look at one species in two different environments, one in the desert that is orange and one that is darker in surroundings, you can find that they might look orange or black based on camoflage (they may look different in colour in the same species, applys so all animals) and theres also the evolutionary advantage of having darker skin in warmer areas, and lighter skin in colder areas, even if it seems to opposite (since dark objects are warmer in direct sunlight and light objects tend to opposite that, remember we are not objects and its more difficult then that) it makes sense. How about melanin, the effect the sun has on melanin is often seen in people with freckles, which are most likely because of the exposure to the sun (i have freckles i was not born with, just like everyone of every race) melanin reacts by consentrating on certain areas of the skin, that could be the opposite of what happened to white people it despersed over time (as it has been shown that freckles dissapear, or lighten if not exposed to sun anymore) not saying that being black is a freckle ( it"s wayyy more complicated and is due to the higher amount of melanin, kinda like in a freckle) but thats and example of how melanin acts, and evolutionarily that has to have had (and probably still has) a positive effect, otherwise it wouldnt happen. And as i know i am not the smartest person to this topic, heck i probably got some things wrong in this wall of words, but yeah, i probably have black ancestors and happened to get a resessive gene or two. Listen I am white, and my fiancé’s best friend is mixed race, and I Touched his Afro once because he offered. We were having a conversation about hair and I was genuinely interested in how people care for their natural hair where it is so very different from Caucasian hair. BUT I would NEVER do it or even ask in a public setting to a stranger. That’s someone else’s BODY people. It’s the same as physical assault in my opinion. Black or mixed race individuals are NOT animals to be “petted”. I can’t believe someone would be so ignorant as to assault someone like that and think it’s alright.

However, the panellists are talking about those who lack social awareness, self awareness and social grace. I had long hair and I am a black woman not biracial. I've even had black people not think I was black because of my hair. I ended up developing alopecia. So now I have a shaved head just like the Black Panther movie. I'm older than most here online so it's been about 25 years. When I was younger with that shaved head it was such a novelty I have had strangers touch my head, both men and women without asking.

I never thought the whole "reaching without asking" happened until it happened to me a few months ago because I figured people had more decency to at least ask. It was by a girl I sorta knew(we did a group project together) who has straight hair. I normally wear my hair in buns or braids but I decided to wear it out as a fluffy afro one day. I live in Scandinavia, and I hate it when people ask me if they can touch my hair, some even try to touch without asking..and I am like, what if I keep asking you the same, I keep my Afro all summer and rastas in winter, I NEVER EVER wear straight wig or weave on my head, it just doesnt fit me...............I tell people I dont like to be touched, and its the truth, if they ask how I wash, I say water and shampoo, how do you wash yours?........... I think that's disgusting to ask if someones hair affects them being employed, like "oh you have your natural afro hair, which is so unprofessional!".
No they're asking if they struggle, and they do- look up the statistics for this kinda thing, it's insane how biased employers are based on hair and quite frankly disgusting.
While it's true that having natural hair can affect your employment (to the point that California had to ban hair-based discrimination in the workplace), it's strikes me as a really invasive question to ask someone unless you're at least very, *very* good friends. I want to add, as a white person with 3b curly hair, whose colleagues cannot actually tell the difference between when my hair is just-woke-up messy or put-in-an-effort-and-styled (I guess they assume curly hair is supposed to look messy?), no one has ever asked me to straighten my hair or alter it in any way to be more professional-looking at work. These "isn't your hair so unprofessional!" comments and bringing hair into the professional image debate is literally just about curbing and controlling Blackness and making them fit a White-centric ideal. It's not about "fitting a certain look", *it's about assuming that Black features, and therefore Black people, are unfit for the workplace* and I'm not surprised a lot of Black people don't want to talk about this deep struggle. I wouldn't want to, either. #NaturalHairIsProfessional

These older caucasian women walked from behind me, and one grabbed on to one of my braids WHILE WALKING and said it was beautiful. I called my sister and she was not happy at all😂 Like LADY I don't know who the hell you are, and you didn't ask fool... when I finally thought about it i realized it was rude.
