"That's how I want you to feel. Like you learned jack squat, but felt a part of our frenzied love for The Venture Bros. Before you made the mistake of reading this book, you felt like you, and you alone, understood The Venture Bros. You felt the show was written for you.
    You were right!
    It was.
Don't let this book tell you differently. Don't believe the lies! Forget the half-remembered anecdotes and cryptic scribbles! It's still your show! Nobody will ever understand it but you! You simply stumbled upon our love letters.

In hindsight, Mantilla's whole character encapsulates the entire show's whole thing; a super-intelligent, capable person who spent so much time and resources on an overly-complicated plan for such a simple end-goal that she winds up getting anyway, fully aware of how crazy it looks like to an outsider, and while it fundamentally effects a lot of people's lives along the way, the ending is ultimately of little consequence.
That's not me bashing her; I think it's genius.

1:58, theyve all known Shiela for some time and know of her loyalty, but because of the codes of the organizations, they had to make it look as if she escaped so she can get the truth out. They also established earlier how the OSI and Guild treats suspected traitors, so they didnt want her to be subjected to all that, especially since she was innocent, and they didnt want to compromise their own positions.

Honestly when I saw it, I knew they were cramming like 1 or 2 seasons into 1 movie but I could care less given how the show was so packed of stuff for even 1 season. Finding out WHY the Monarch hates Rusty was both ridiculous and hilarious. My only complaint is that we never got to know if the Action Man ever woke up and decided to see Star Wars after his and Hanks adventures in purgatory

My absolutely favorite scene was Dr V Monarch and Garry running into the room with the robots like they were going to kick ass and bleeding from every orifice on their bodies.
Biggest letdown: I didn't expect the movie to cover this with the time it had, buut, I really wanted to see the whole thing with Doc and Billy emerging from Grover Clevland's time machine play out. Something about that tease really had me itching for some time paradox action.

  • @jacemerlin
    @jacemerlin ปีที่แล้ว +12

Honestly I feel like this movie was a fantastic ending to the "Venture Brothers" arc as a whole. We not only get to see without any ambiguity what Hank and Dean's origins were, but also get a nice conclusion to their personal drama from the previous season and can rest assured that despite all of the toxic relationships this world ended up producing, their bond is solid and they would be able to handle any hardships that will come in their way in the future (albeit rather clumsily). Not only that, but we actually see a reason why The Monarch hated Rusty so much the whole time, which drove a good chunk of the entire series, and even though the answer to how they were related ended up being a little silly, would it really be the Venture Brothers if it wasn't? It also lead to a great moment for every viewer to go "oh, so that's why they called it that"
The story of both pairs of venture brothers has concluded, so the series can comfortably come to an end. Of course the characters are going to continue going on new adventures and learning crucial information, but it's not necessary that the audience sees it. It's always been a part of the show that there are plenty of adventures between episodes that we'll never see, because adventuring is just a part of their daily lives at this point. It's sad to see such a beloved series come to an end, and there are definitely parts of the movie that felt like they were originally going to be standalone episodes, but they did the best with what they were able to in my opinion. I would love to see them revisit the world and these characters some more in the future, and there's definitely ample opportunity for them to do so, but personally I'd rather prefer them to use the elaborate world they've built and focus on completely different parts of it instead of just more Rusty, The Monarch, and the boys personal dramas

I agree, and I think that a big thing that helped with that was the natural expectation to not be fully satisfied that just comes with the property itself. I mean, that’s what the basis of the entire show originally was and it always kept with the setup/letdown formula even in later years.
They even handled all the huge reveals that way too; they showed the brothers’ “mom” in an after credits scene but didn’t give the satisfaction of the boys knowing, and they didn’t include the moment where the monarch and rusty actually heard the words “you two are clones of the same guy”, plus the answer was basically given straight to us with Ben’s ramblings while Dean was recovering from fainting in the halloween special. Anyway, I just think that all really worked in the movie’s favor

I felt Hank’s forgiveness was kinda rushed, though I loved his soliloquies with different versions of himself. Mantilla having a childish crush on DMtM, constructing a super elaborate plan to fulfill it and quickly walking back on it kinda fits with the general character of most of the characters in the show’s universe. Overcommitting to silly stuff in an elaborate but somehow not overcommitted way is kind of the venture bros bread and butter. The Revenge Society did it, Sphinx (Sphinx!) did it, Captain Sunshine did it. It’s good fun

my feelings towards the movie was very similar to my feelings towards the ending of the Invincible comic series. Im not spoiling it. In the end, the ending felt a bit rushed, conclusive in a way but really rushed. Im satisfied with this but i know there was mush more that could have been done, so much more. Im not mad, im not disappointed but i feel have ended stronger. This was still a fasntastic movie but really could have got more done in a 2 hour run time, or did what futurama did and make mini movies until they were back on the air.

She's watched like bits here and there and like certain clips and laughed at some jokes in the background but never paid more attention. She knew how much this movie meant to me and watched it with me and loved it and is now open to trying the whole series. She had very little context and ot resonated.

I agree with your review basically at every point, but idk if I'm in denial or what, but I really don't think this is the end. The creators have said that they want to make more and considering the fact that Futurama just got a revival and apparently King of the Hill is getting a revival, we're in an age where nothing dies forever. This will probably be the end of the Venture Bros for a good while, but I remain hopeful that some day, we will see these characters again.

I pretty much agree with your criticisms. I'll also add that I feel like ARCH wasn't explained well enough? If it was just cover for mantilla to get close to Dr. Mrs, then what was up with all those henchmen? Were they just random hires? and how did she fake that footage to make it look like Dr. Mrs. was controlling ARCH? I know they only had so much time, but I feel a couple more scenes here and there could have helped. And to try to explain what the scene at 2:00, I guess legally they were required to detain or kill her (by the OSI and Guild) but personally they didn't want to? That was my interpretation. So they're acting it up for their respective sides.
I really did like the movie though! Glad certain characters got to shine a bit and I'm really happy with where and how it ended. That being said, I would love if they were allowed to make more movies in the future. I doubt we'd ever get a full season again but I can see more movies happening if the stars align.

My brother and I watch series together all the time. This was one he found and brought me into, and I was brought in right before the last two episodes aired so I didn’t have to experience the agony of waiting in between seasons more than once, but that cancellation and movie announcement was definitely agonizing lmao. Hank is my favorite character, so I was naturally devastated all that time.
But I’m very satisfied. I agree with your complaints, but I think they did a great job with the consolidation of an entire season into one movie. The only thing I would really add to that list of complaints myself would be that I was a little disappointed that the monarch continued being evil and all that-I really thought that he was going to give evil up and become the blue morpho once he realized he was wasting all his hatred on essentially himself.
But the thing I can’t stop gushing about still is just how absolutely perfect the mother reveal was. Of COURSE it was him! It just had to be, there was no other good explanation that would have satisfied anyone at all. And there was no answer that would have been as heartwarming. I love that this fact alone is what finally solidifies in us the idea that rusty really does love his kids, he’s just so broken from his childhood that he doesn’t know how to show it in a way that’s comprehensible to everyone around him. And then of course he has his ego holding him back from admitting he didn’t get someone pregnant lol.

I think Brock, Shore Leave and Red Death really were arresting Sheila because they thought she was guilty of a crime. Shore Leave shouted "run" to give her a head start because he liked her - as did the whole crew because they had worked with her for a long time.
Red Death knew she was innocent but didn't fancy his chances against the people in the OSI - there would have been carnage if they had turned to combat so he avoided it by using Daisy the horse to help her escape. It also enabled the awesome sequence of her jumping out of the window in her nightgown and riding away on Daisy.
I found the flashback-scene of the boys' antics over the years very moving too.
I don't know if I am reading too much into this, but I reckon that Dean mistakenly thinking he is a vampire, is a manifestation of his guilt over sleeping with his brother's girlfriend. Dean tends to brood on the events of his life, but he is usually a kind and decent person. This is the first time he has done anything bad and he did it to the person closest to him. His worry that he had become a vampire was him coming to terms with a side of himself which he didn't like.

It was nice that they kept their original vision of having a non-traditional ending. No backyard BBQ with all the characters gathering and being chummy, zooming out on the location and flashing "The end", this was basically a longer episode, and while it may be the definitive end, there's always a chance for more. Whether the series can get revived by a new network, or just return in a more concentrated format with specials, who knows, but knowing that there's still some mysteries left means any possible revivals would be justified. It wouldn't be coming back just because "people liked this show", as is often the case with a lot of programs that get revived, at least the comedy focused ones, I guess I should say.

For me it was satisfactory but I guess it's the venture bros nature of not always getting what you specifically want
I just feel like the name of the show is a little devoid of meaning when technically there are no venture bros they're all clones (asides from dermit) which brings in to question if they can even be called brothers especially if rusty and malcome aren't

I have no real social media presence anymore, so I gotta post my review here. YOU'RE WELCOME, THE INTERNET.
Here's the thing: I didn't expect a massive ending; knowing the subversive nature of the venture brothers narrative, I expected an anticlimax parade and in some ways that's entirely what it was. The comedy of the venture brothers often comes from a massive anticlimax where the finale would be, and I don't know any other way that a movie could have worked. I do regret not giving the boys a mother-i think it invalidates the whole action man coma scene which I may be the one person who actually liked it. The force majeure / bobbi st. simone angle could have easily been a season's worth of b-plot and I think that's why her abandoning the plan came off as so randomly asspulled. Referencing the 'abandoned zoo' that Hank used to run away to, and then having him run away to it again, was my favorite deep cut of this particular story, but there were some others that really got me.
I'm one of the people who started watching the venture bros because I love watching Brock murder people, and though his characterization has changed to where he's not the twitchy eye swedish murder machine I initially fell in love with, I think he kind of got dumped on in this part of the story. He was barely there and he did almost nothing that mattered, and his big speech was another anticlimax in that the rest of the OSI laughed at him. (I did enjoy he and Red Death's posturing bits though.)
I really think that it could have been done better in a number of ways; even another 30 minute director's cut could fix some of the problems I had with it, but overall I am satisfied with the ending, I loooooved the resolution of the shared DNA between Rusty and Malcom, and really the story of Hank and Dean making up finally I would have loved regardless as the rift between them after Sirena kind of broke my heart. Derpy Daisy made me giggle and got the hardest laugh out of me, especially when tied up and then rising out of the chair to do an abortive kneel to the true sovreign of the guild and then admitting that he needs to shut the fuck up, that had me in stitches. Jefferson's battle with the blackulas gave us some delicious action and plot, the golem trick actually was a good one, and honestly I could do a whole series about a shared work/living space for twisted edgy loner superheroes. I'm happy with it, even if it isn't perfect-but I'm really just happy that the Venture Brothers was there for us in our moments when we felt like failures-because the overarching theme of the venture brothers is that failure isn't the end.
Thanks as always for your content on this channel and for giving me a home to talk about it. Go team venture!

Loved the video, the only thing i disagree with is the notion that "if you expected it to tie up all the questions in a neat little bow youre watching the wrong show". Venture bros always answered questions while introducing more to be asked but it didnt just drop the ball entirely. It always felt like it was saving the best questions to keep people intrigued while they were having fun with their favorite characters, the mere fact it finally told us who the boys mother was should be proof. But you said it felt empty after the credits started rolling. I think thats why. The network gave them one final chance to answer our questions and end on a satisfying note, but i dont feel like they did. I dont think you should just wave it away and excuse it. Its poor writing and it feels like a bit of a spat in the face as a fan who was there for the first episodes airing. I wouldnt be so upset if it wasnt their final try. It ultimately just felt like another random episode, a fair episode, but nothing special. It feels hollow knowing they had this opportunity and squandered it. I think they pulled back and decided not to give us everything we wanted, not because "its that kind of show" but because they wanted to leverage this into a return of the show proper. Either that or they legitimately dont know how to make satisfying endings except by shoehorning more mysteries. They did the same thing the last two seasons, ending it with more questions and intigue. Sadly this special didnt make any huge waves, barely anyone online is talking about it, and i dont think they are getting any more chances so it feels pretty bad to be a fan of this great show that, at least to me, just didnt stick the landing. Loved it as just another random episode, hate it as a finale

I also have that empty feeling. I didn't dislike it but just felt like a lot of the conclusions and story beats didn't make a lot of sense. I didn't like Mantilla's stuff at all and the Venture building floating was a fun idea but would be fun for an episode of the show, not the plot of a movie

Movies are not, and should not, be made for everybody as we all have different tastes. As for me, I have some thoughts:
    - The first being that Dean was already an annoying bitch since he went emo with the haircut. He just seems unnecessarily mad all the time, for no reason even when Brock came back.
    - Saying that "it's not that kind of movie" is honestly a cop out. They had intentions for scare bear for next season but the show got cancelled considering he drove the plot of the last season in some episodes knowing who he was is a big deal. When you finish a show you do have an obligation to answer questions. The ORB (if I recall correctly) was already answered and it was broken too so we can chock it up to that.
-Mantilla's storyline was pointless. Bobbi's story was good enough as it is they didn't need to add a brand new character for something that seemed really reasonable. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch's arc was done in my opinion last season they didn't need to waste our time with that pointless story and instead could have answered some questions. Instead we're stuck with that misandrist **** because (2023 wahmen).
-They turned Red Death into a joke he seemed like the other villains when he was made to be a big deal prior.
-Brick Frog's storyline went nowhere and honestly should have been more of a story that seemed interesting. OSI should have played a bigger role too.
    - We don't need ALL the questions answered just the important ones. I get that it was a movie and to cram all of the series answers into it would have been challenging but there are ways around it, i.e. answer these questions on the show and as per the movie cram more time into it. It's not uncommon for movies to be 2hrs almost 3hrs long these days and that could have given them a bit more wiggle room.
-Instead we got a cock tease about Monarch and Venture. We didn't need an origin we already knew what Monarch's origin was and the baboon DNA was pointless. Yeah it explains his aggression but that didn't need an explanation. Some people have anger issues. He's human. If the baboon DNA gave him some kind of strength it'd be one thing but it does nothing except prevent hair loss which, given that the Monarch is RICH he could have solved that with hair plugs or have his wife concoct something for that.
There was also some bullshit reason about he hates Venture for sleeping with his girlfriend at the time. He said it was "one of a hundred reasons" he hates Venture. Ok. What's the MAIN reason better yet, give us a bigger reason or name a few it doesn't have to be all. Sleeping with his girlfriend is a fine reason to hate him but I feel like them not answering is a slap to the face. Leaving it up to your imagination was cool at one point but it feels like their saying "write the story for me."
The Monarch's hatred for Venture drives a lot of the plots for various episodes I would think, if any questions were going to be answered, it'd be that one it sounds like it'd be pretty fucking important, don't you think? Instead our time is wasted with other nonsense we didn't need.
    - A great way to end it would have been focus on the Monarch and Venture instead of searching for Hank (which the boys story could have been a sidelined answer or a B storyline) and have the Guild disbanded for incompetency. I'm fine with the villains being around but perhaps a new better org could be created that fixes the guild's shortcomings and same for OSI (if you want).
It was an ok movie but it felt like another episode and all this time I'm just like...meh. Ok. The last line of the movie is 21 saying "Pwned' which is cringey but that's his character so I'll take it.

In case if you didnt liked venture brothers' movie:
    1)Watch it again
    2)Repeat st.1 until you're liking it
Pardon me for being salty, but a lot of this film feels kinda wrong, more than some: Debra's backstory exists only to oppose main moral of the picture; there's no hint how Debra's tools and comany was able to compete with Guild; Brock is just going "They are the best of the best" & do nothin whole picture, Dean being just NPC giving escort mission, uugh. This is half-4ssed film when you hear *beep* and see that "Elige tua" is gibberish from google translate. Venture was clever, it was a goddamn Rat-King of backstories and motivations after bit of kickstart in S1-2. And this is low level for them, I dare to say, they get from venture's level to marvel's level. I wonder, what would happen if they gave answers - in their own special way of course - to most anticipated questions and tied up all hanging ends, rather than introduce one-time "new threat level like nothing before" villain. The crew did best what they could but it aint a reason to close eyes on what is weak. Ill better go rewatch best of old seasons and jackoff on edgy 21st, thank you for the time

This doesn't sound like a story they wanted to tell. It sounds like they were shafted and given a movie after really really really trying hard to fight for it or obtained it via sympathy or whatever but only got rights for a movie and they had to scramble. If they had been given a green light for more seasons they could tell the story they wanted better.

Offen works of fiction are bigger than the author's own view. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle hated Sherlock Holmes. He bad mouth the character and said he rejoiced at Holmes death. What was Doyle's real interest? Fairies. Yep, he believed in and studied fairies. After Doyle realized what a dumbass he was, he reclaimed Sherlock Holmes. That's like a parent who throws their nine-year-old out on the street because they hate them. After their child becomes rich and famous, they start bang on the door begging for money. I think Public and Hammer are genius, but they actually hate what is best about the Venture Bros. Well, Public does. The only character grows, the only character who see the world he is born into and reacts sanely is Dean. Both of the boys are deeply damaged by the life they were born into. Hank escapes into an ever-growing fantasy world which he never leaves. Dean is this jittery scared kid afraid of the world. Still, the entire series Dean fight to escape the cards he is dealt. The most telling episode of this is the Halloween special. The three brothers confront their past by going to the Potter home. All of them are afraid, but only Dean stands up faces the Venture past by entering the Potter home. Hank and Dermot stay in back and live a life eternal childhood. This is where Dean steps up and confronts the future. It's not an easy decision, and he is not met by success. Hank and Dermot never grow past that point. Hank is lost in fantasy world, while Dermot is the forever trailer park kid. The whole series Dean and his growth to be more than the cards life dealt him. The only other person who become more than his circumstance is henchman 21. I don't know if hapless henchmen's growth into a passive serial killer is all that inspiring. I haven't seen the movie year. I may never see the movie. Whatever is said, about the show, it reverts to season one. Dean is a sniveling coward, and we are all supposed to break into tear because Hank isn't given an enough love. This is more about Public's dealing with his own issues than then the show. I'll tell you this. In twenty years, Public will be less than a fart in the wind. Looking for relevance Public will be banging on the Venture's door. The door will open and he will say, "Remember me? I'm your good old dad. You don't want to leave me out in the cold, do you?" Public will be speaking to a ghost who says, "You could've done something at one time, but those days are dead and gone." Yeah, I'm not ever watching the movie.
