I like Rick and Morty just fine but yes I agree. Venture Brothers parodies most of the same tropes and clichés Rick and Morty does, but better and in ways that explore the characters in a more satisfying way. I also appreciate the self-awareness and ability to balance its more serious storylines with its comedic tone on a more consistent basis.

My issues with the show is that the entire family become Rick, the meta-commentary comedy got stale, and I feel as though the actions don't have consequences (or the consequences end up having no weight to them). The tone of the show and the chemistry in-between characters got more and more negative, if not toxic. And the dialogue sometimes feels like the creators are speaking their minds to through their characters. And maybe I'm diving into nitpicking territory (sorry if I am), but it doesn't help that the community is cringe and that Rick and Morty is just everywhere in their advertising campaigns. You and everyone can disagree with me. But I just wanted to lay why I personally don't want to watch the show anymore, and just rewatch the Venture Bros in it's place.
Tried to figure out for a while why I couldn’t stomach Rick and Morty but love VB…both are cynical and arch…R&M is unkind, soulless and nasty. It’s an abusive, narcissistic stepdad. It doesn’t care about you but it wants you to like it. VB is harsh but full of heart, it slaps you hard but tells you the truth and you always feel like there is an underlying kindness along with piercing wit. R&M’s version of Sgt Hatred would make my skin crawl.

My unpopular opinion is that Venture Brothers did a lot of things that BoJack Horseman gets credit for doing first because so few people saw Venture Brothers. I love them both and I’ve binged both series multiple times, and Venture Brothers was at least a decade ahead of it’s time.
The creators recently stated in an interview that the third watch is when everything in their opinion clicks exactly right- the first for taking it in as it is, the second for haphazardly googling references and weird things you notice the second time, the third for taking those pieces together and seeing them all connect Imo, if you're looking to conserve a bit of time on a rewatch, the first season doesn't connect as heavily with everything else going forward so is easier to watch just a few parts of if you want to refresh- there's some deep cut early s1 references in later seasons but it's where they admit they were struggling to determine the identity of it all so is easier to jump past on a second or third viewing

Another reason for the time between seasons is that DOC and JACKSON do EVERYTHING, except the actual animation; they write the episodes, design supervise the design of all the characters and sets, direct the voice acting, including themselves, edit the animation…EVERYTHING; no writer’s room, very small voice cast for a very large list of characters, and the whole thing is still very artisanal and boutique…
I watched a few episodes as a kid and didn't connect with it at all. Fast forward to 2017 and I get reccomended it and gave it a shot only to discover that; 1) Its episodic and 2) when you watch it in order it's one of the best pieces of animation that's ever been made.
This show has literally picked me up from dark dark times. It's beautiful in design and dialogue. I couldn't thank the creators more for giving us a glimpse into their wonderfully weird minds.

The Venture Brothers is the most underrated and smartly written show I ever saw. You left out the jokes about music. This show based a shape-shifting supervillain on David Bowie for god's sake!
On a rainy night in April of 2003, I stumbled upon AdultSwim getting ready for bed. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep that night. I fell in love with each and every animated show that aired that night. From Inuyasha to Cowboy Bebop to Trigun to, of course, The Venture Bros. I can not properly express just how much this show means to me or how sad I am now that it's over.
Great video! Some constructive criticism: Gotta find a different position for the ring light, the reflection off your glasses makes it super hard to connect with your eyes. I find myself as the viewer distracted as hell instead of connecting with you and what you're saying.

I've watched The Venture Bros. since it started as a preview, I have loved it as one of the best series in my adulthood. This along with The Boondocks have been a high point for my adulthood. I have watched the movie it was awesome, it was a fitting end... Though more could definitely be brought.
Venture bros fan base is like the one piece fan base in the sense of they want you to get into it so you can enjoy it too. Its the opposite of gate keeping.
Thank you for this beautiful appeal for one of the best animated shows ever made. I've spent the last 10 years trying to convince those I know to give it a chance. One of them finally did, and he is more hooked than even I was. He is now trying to get his friends to watch it. Lol You did a wonderful job breaking it down without spoilers. Working on my 4th play through of the series after finally seeing the movie. It's amazing how much you notice in the first few seasons that pertain to the final conclusions that were right there in front of us. This show is incredible..

I 100% agree with everything u just said in this video... The Venture Bros is completely fucking awesome. It's simply hilarious as well as exceedingly well-crafted & exceptionally entertaining. And because the writing & world building is so good & the lore so rich, the more u watch it the better it gets. It should of been & still needs to be on prime time major network television in the same spot the Simpsons, Family Guy, or King of the Hill used to be in. ( the 5pm to 9pm slot on Fox or even ABC, NBC, CBS, etc). I mean if Bob's Burgers can get a spot then certainly the Venture Bros deserves a slot ...or three even.
It's sad that AS canceled this show. It kind of represents the distillation of the early Adult Swim shows. It takes the charter archetypes from the Hannah Barbara cartoons, and elevates it to a level that adults can enjoy and relate to. The show may have started as a parody of Johnny Quest and Scooby Doo, but it became a soap opera with Marvel comics like characters. I'm not sure if Adult swim will ever have another show on the same scale, especially since their current money maker, Rick and Morty, seems conflicted in whether they want to tell more serialized lore based stories, or keep the show episodic. I hope Hammer and Publick are able to create something new, but I understand if this production, spanning 20 years, exists as their shared Magnum opus.

Rewatching this show is amazing because there’s so many background details and even hidden jokes in the dialogue that you tend to appreciate more after the first viewing. Definitely recommend 👍🏻
Simply, original story telling at its very best. Never a dull watch, as every troupe and stereotype in modern Pop culture was blended in a strange and beautiful kaleidoscope of colourful madness and then topped off with a well judged amount of pathos and heart. Best show I've seen in years and I wish it was still being made.

I’ll admit, I watched the full first season and liked the show, but a few of the jokes fell flat for me/made me physically cringe. Still pretty good though, love the bodyguard guy also love the Monarch and Doctor Girlfriend, especially Dr Girlfriend, she’s epic
I'd say get at least to the 3rd season that's when the show is picking up and every episode get much more exciting and expansive, personally every episode of season 3/4 is a banger! Of course you don't need to but giving it a shot it can easily become a favorite of yours
The Venture Bros has been pretty consistently my favorite show since go (though admittedly, and as you pointed out, season one is pretty uneven, and I usually skip a few episodes when rewatching). I'm lucky to have been surrounded by college theatre kids when it debuted who ate up the nuance and pop culture references, then later had gay Gen X roommates who were happy to watch it on a loop because we didn't have cable but rather a sizable DVD library. It's always hard to introduce someone new to VB, but I find if they can stick through the necessary exposition of S1, then they enjoy it from that point on (except my partner was very put off by Captain Sunshine...) Now, if only I could find a DVD of the finale movie, since I had to watch it while staying with a friend with Max.
I've never heard anything about adult swim being slow in production just that it was the Venture Bros team who took ages to get anything completed and adult swim were cool with that because they didn't have that many shows. Then Rick and Morty came along, showed them how much money you can make if you act like a real producer and Venture Bros couldn't keep pace
That's not...I can't say that the time it took to take to make didn't play into the cancelation, VB took a long time to make because it was one of the last cartoons ever produced to be done mostly by hand. It also has a deeply complex compositing process. There's so many assets and layers and colors and it was mostly done by just two people in a new York office by themselves. Rick and Morty took forever to make in the beginning because Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are nutriois for procrastinating and being perfectionists at the last minute. It's not that VB couldn't keep pace. Rick and Morty appeals to more people. I hate it but it's the truth.
I thought the show was dead when they brought the boys back to life. There were suddenly no stakes and Brock’s concern was pointless. I was crushed. But, they handled it pretty well.
Dude 14 years and 7 seasons wasn't just on adult swim. I met Hammer and Public and I knew one of their roommates. It takes them a while to write. Plus Hammer took time off for his band Weep.
Better than I remember? I remember Th Venture Bros. being the best tv show I've ever watched (not cartoon, tv show). I'm not here to disagree with you, but I never considered it being better than eating or breathing. I'm off to test the hypothesis! Go Team Venture!

I'd say get at least to the 3rd season that's when the show is picking up and every episode get much more exciting and expansive, personally every episode of season 3/4 is a banger! Of course you don't need to but giving it a shot it can easily become a favorite of yours
I liked Venture Bros, but I kept losing interest because of how infrequent new seasons were. 😞😞
The Venture Bros has been pretty consistently my favorite show since go (though admittedly, and as you pointed out, season one is pretty uneven, and I usually skip a few episodes when rewatching). I'm lucky to have been surrounded by college theatre kids when it debuted who ate up the nuance and pop culture references, then later had gay Gen X roommates who were happy to watch it on a loop because we didn't have cable but rather a sizable DVD library. It's always hard to introduce someone new to VB, but I find if they can stick through the necessary exposition of S1, then they enjoy it from that point on (except my partner was very put off by Captain Sunshine...)
Now, if only I could find a DVD of the finale movie, since I had to watch it while staying with a friend with Max.

I've never heard anything about adult swim being slow in production just that it was the Venture Bros team who took ages to get anything completed and adult swim were cool with that because they didn't have that many shows. Then Rick and Morty came along, showed them how much money you can make if you act like a real producer and Venture Bros couldn't keep pace
That's not...I can't say that the time it took to take to make didn't play into the cancelation, VB took a long time to make because it was one of the last cartoons ever produced to be done mostly by hand. It also has a deeply complex compositing process. There's so many assets and layers and colors and it was mostly done by just two people in a new York office by themselves.
Rick and Morty took forever to make in the beginning because Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are nutriois for procrastinating and being perfectionists at the last minute.
It's not that VB couldn't keep pace. Rick and Morty appeals to more people. I hate it but it's the truth.
I thought the show was dead when they brought the boys back to life. There were suddenly no stakes and Brock’s concern was pointless. I was crushed. But, they handled it pretty well.

Dude 14 years and 7 seasons wasn't just on adult swim. I met Hammer and Public and I knew one of their roommates. It takes them a while to write. Plus Hammer took time off for his band Weep.

Better than I remember? I remember Th Venture Bros. being the best tv show I've ever watched (not cartoon, tv show). I'm not here to disagree with you, but I never considered it being better than eating or breathing. I'm off to test the hypothesis! Go Team Venture!
