The Egyptian look with the eyes was very popular then. As for her hair, she was indeed a natural redhead, her shade was described as Titian. Anyone with red hair will tell you that it changes colour with age and generally becomes lighter. Don't forget James Arness's hair was dyed dark - he was a natural blonde.
