My Spirulina Culture died, so I switched to growing Chlorella!

  • So for those of you who are unaware, I've been trying for about a year to grow some spirulina and somehow try to turn it into renewable, third generation biofuels. Unfortunately, due to neglect on my part (a time issue I guess :P), I found that after clearing out the culture and restarting, I couldn't get my spirulina to grow even after a few days, which led me to suspect my little squiggly dudes had met their demise.
So now, I've switched growing some round fatty bois, AKA Chlorella Vulgaris. This species of algae has more lipids than Spirulina, and stores them in a more easily extractable form, which is good for things like making biodiesels.
Here is a link to the paper I cited in my video:

This was just something I wanted to showcase. And now, I will get back to the other half of my ModuCoil Project, so stay tuned for that!

    Hello friend.
    Long time no talk.
Glad to see you are still making videos. Rock On!
We should catch up in Discord one of these days.

Your thumbnail of spirulina doesn't look very spirally. If you ever try to grow it again, that's one symptom of sad spirulina you might want to address.

The spirulina cells are a stock image from the internet.

Hello sir, i have been following your TH-cam channel and has quite excellent content, if you don’t mind, how could I reach out to you, I would love to discuss some topics with you.

"Scrubbing CO2 from the atmosphere" "extracting oil for biodiesel" pick one. If you take the CO2 from a power plant and capture it in algae, the process of removing it from the atmosphere is not complete until you find a deep hole and bury it, just like the coal, oil, or gas was buried before some sociopath dug it up and burned it. If you take the carbon compounds (ie those lipids) from your algae and burn them as fuel, you have just released the CO2 you "scrubbed" from the power plant back into the atmosphere. You had fun, you felt good about what you were doing, but you DID NOT achieve what you said you were going to do.
Making biodiesel from algae is a valid way to avoid burning even more fossil fuels, but it in no way reduces the amount of CO2 being released by power plants, even if you are growing the algae on the CO2 coming out of the power plant. All you've done is delayed that CO2 a bit on its journey from the furnace to our atmosphere.

Interesting perspective, but the thing is, if you diversify the use cases of algae, it makes more sense. What I'm assuming here is that *some* of the algal matter be turned into fuel where needed, whereas the rest can be used for other stuff like fertiliser, processed into building materials, and other things that store carbon more permanently.

Spirulina had more protein, so generally better if used as a foodstuff. I want to work on biofuels though.

One grows faster than other, so what😊

It means it can be propagated again quicker, quicker harvests, more productive.
One of the biggest issue with algal Biofuels that need solving is their production efficiency.
