Hi! Hope that these comments find you very well. It is an amazing description with amazing visualization. Btw, how can I get your Spirulina strain? Thank you.
Hi! I am working in lab when our main task is cultivation of Spirulina. I found this video by accident and I got curious. This course you made for home cultivation is pretty good. Actually I am amazed by it.
Hi Mark ! Iv just ordered a small tube of Spirulina culture and id like to begin cultivation soon. Iv found this video very useful! I wud also appreciate any helpful tips u can give me to start cultivating
Recipes are so easy....Guacamole, strait into a salad, any spreadable cheese, any jams, mixed with honey to go on toast, straight into any smoothie, for kids Blue mac n'cheese. Think of it as a food additive, you can add a couple tablespoons to so many things, even coffee and bakery. The taste is so subtle that it mixes very well. You can turn things blue or green. Most blue food coloring uses spurillina to a degree. Just try it, uses it like a spice, 1-2 tablespoons at a time, just don't fry it in a pan. Baking into bread though, delicious and moist! Makes bread better. Just fold 2 tablespoons into the dough for a cool marbled look and the most moist bread ever. Not soggy, just perfect.
Very cool, thanks for this guide and links to products! Generally, what types of contamination problems do people have if they have them when growing their own? I know the PH should inhibit bacterial growth but what about other algae strains? Will it be hospitable for other strains we dont want which might get introduced accidently or already in your starter? Im reading about the microcystin contamination in mass produced spirulina which is produced by Microcystis aeruginosa. Just wonder if we might not have a 100% pure culture over time and not know. Also do you need to sterilize the media in any way if you follow the recipe to make it yourself? Thank you!
Hi! I cant find DAP that is confirmed to be food grade, or is all DAP food grade? Though i did found a DAP fertilizer that is 12% Nitrogen and 60% phosphate that can be used for hydroponics, can i use that instead?
Note that if you want all the vitamins and proteins and other nutrients spirulina can give you, it can't make those without access to the elemental building blocks they're built from. You have to feed it a complete diet if you want it to give you a complete superfood! Spirulina doesn't produce oxygen in order to float - oxygen gas is the waste product of photosynthesis, which it will do whenever it is in light and its other needs are met. Providing good light from the sides of your grow tank will mean that the spirulina trapped in bubbles of oxygen on the top of the tank don't block the light from the rest of the culture. The portion of the culture at the top should be the easiest to skim off if you don't want to disturb the whole culture as much as the usual harvest methods.
This is great info! I'm planning to star my own spirulina "farm" but... What if I have to leave the house for a week or two? Can spirulina survive it? Do I leave it in a bigger container with more nutrients or maybe limit the light/temperature to slow it down?
If you did end up buying spirulina or any other edible algae and don’t get screwed over can you tell me where you got it from? A lot of vendors are fake and selling contaminated spirulina, water, or dead on arrival.
what size glass jar to start out with? I plan on having a 20 gallon aquarium but I know I have to slowly ramp up to that sized. Is this a 3 gallon jar?
How an aquarium Could change the process ? For example. An 30x100x10cm tank or 100x100x 60-70cm ( because 40x60mm are the dimensions of rectangular tubes and because I have such a place on the balcony where I can place it and it wouldn't bother you for stealing space) ☺️😃
Maybe it's just my assumption maybe it will help how about using a diffuser/ diffusor a tube with an endcap and several holes it should get more bubbles in the water

Hey Rose, it's really up to you and how dense your culture is right now/how quick you want your spirulina to grow, so I'd suggest playing around with different settings. I remember reading that the ideal is to have your spirulina exposed 50% of the time. Many shorter bubble periods are preferred as you just want to swirl your mix around and not create a perpetual motion for your culture.
you may be able to find natural springs in your country that are open to the public; there was a video-tour of these centuries-old springs. it'd still be a good idea to see if a local govt agency has lab /test results of your water (tap or natural springs) to confirm; most places test regularly. -if that is helpful.

I have microalgae contamination in spirulina which also has capacity to grow at 10pH now what I have to do and next time how I can prevent contamination of like this
Interesting. How did you know you had contamination with other algae? This concerns me from wanting to try this if other algae's live in these conditions as well. And how do you think the contamination was introduced?
Where can I get a fresh pure/high quality starting culture of spirulina? Can I make this myself by using some dried spirulina in water or should I buy online some fresh?
Hi, I would like to start my own, spirulina set up, can you please give me where can I get all of the things I need including the spirulina, and it's food, I would like to make it an stable food for me since low gut bacteria and low immune system. Also this way I'm sure I am getting clean and safe materials because you have alread using it. Thank you in advance.
if you have gut problems, then i strongly suggest that you look into making your own fermented foods, easier than cultivating spirulina. I run a small pizza shop, and i offer to my customers my live culture hot sauce, as well as sauer kraut which i put on my fresh green salads. Fermented cabbage is one of the BEST foods you can consume. You should youtube search on how to make sauer kraut, but for pretty much all fermented vegetables, you keep the same ratio of salt to vegetable ingredients, which for me is 2.5% so if i have 100 grams of shredded cabbage, i add 2.5 grams of salt. don't add water, just shred you cabbage( i also put in shredded carrot, fresh dill when in season, cilantro, and celery), then mix in the salt. The salt draws water out of the vegetables, and you must save this water and put it in the ceramic or glass jar with the vegetables. Important thing is to keep the vegetables under the level of the brine, you don't want air touching it, as the beneficial bacteria are anaerobic (don't like O2). after a couple days bubbles will form, means the bacteria are reproducing, creating co2, and you can tamp it down. I cover my kraut with a big leaf or two of cabbage, and i weigh it down with custom made ceramic weights, but you could just use a good ziplock bag with the right amount of drinking water to weigh it down. after about five days, you can start sampling the kraut, should begin turning sour, and when i'm happy with the level of sour i want, i put it in the fridge. It will keep for at least 4 months, but i usually eat it all before it's at that point. sometimes it can keep even longer no problem.
