  • Bought this and fixed it up back in May, then sold it about 2 weeks ago. It was nice to have a project to work on! Can't say I'd own a Murray personally, but it's a decent little mower.

I have that model. Mine has the 46” cut. Love it. Those Murray’s are strong.

Those Murrays were one of the most disposable lawn tractor of their day. Today, it looks really tough because it has so much metal in it, but in it’s day, it was a Walmart special! This one really beat the odds since most of them were long dead by 2000. I like the sound that the twin makes at idle ... reminds me a little of the sound of an idling air cooled VW engine.

I have a soft spot for the opposed twins for some reason. But yeah, overall quality on this one was not great.

What does it mean when your shifter suddenly gets stiff? It was very smoothe for years

Try greasing the shifter first. If it's still stiff it may be an internal issue

I wonder how long Briggs made the black shroud opposed twins 1978 through ?
seems like lot of people don't like two cylinder I'm looking at buying a 1979 Murray
    16 h.p. twin maybe # 401799 engine and Murrray tractor # 4166 brigg's ?Seems Briggsput
the engine # on the black engine cover opposed twin's 3 or 4 inches down near rhs intake manifold

How do you move the engine cover? I got one recently and need to change out the oil filter and carb since it's leaking gas from the exhaust. It doesn't lift forward like the newer models I've seen and doesn't want to lift up.

These engines don't have oil filters. The engine cover has some bolts holding it to the black metal coverings on the side of the engine. You also might need to unbolt the fuel line and some wiring depending on how your tractor is set up. It might be easiest to find a video on it to help you out.

@@thenash76 Thanks. Yeah, I'm trying to find a video showing how to remove it. Might not be using the right terms

Ugh was really hoping you'd know something about the starter on it. I have same one (38604a from Feb 91) & it needs new starter. Apparently they no longer make the original briggs & Stratton & there's THREE possible OEMs now (diff size housing) & no store can tell me which is right & they don't take returns. I'm kinda stuck.
The info in engine is as follows if anyone has advice:
    Model 280707
    Type: 0411 01
    Code: 91021131

I would use that information and look it up on Jackssmallengines.com. I've bought tons of parts from there. When you enter your info, there will be different diagrams you can use to look up the parts.
