Make your Riding Mower Quieter for less then $30. A custom exhaust for mowers and tractors.

  • I'm installing a custom muffler setup on my riding mower. Is not hard, and its not expensive. For less then $30.00 I made my exhaust system that makes my rider at least 3 times as quiet. In fact, Now I hear the rear end, and the mechanical churn of the engine instead of the actual exhaust! This set up can be used with twin cylinder engines too. This is part of a series to videos I shot on converting a Riding mower into a "poor man's ATV".

    I've finally gotten around to filming the mower with the dual exhaust. The link for it is this:th-cam.com/video/pruyVf_xhhM/w-d-xo.html Check it out, and when your done, check out my channel for many many other riding mower and garden equipment videos and demonstrations.

      I was going to comment that you really needed to show the audio. Thanks for the 2nd video, it looks really good. I had done something similar to a portable generator. I just got one of the cheap "turbo" mufflers from the auto parts store, and a few adapters to bring it from the tiny outlet to the muffler's in port. I didn't have a welder at the time, so it was all clamped. It leaked horribly, but it did knock down the exhaust noise, leaving all the internal engine sounds.

    For those interested, I have nearly the exact same set-up (engine, mower, and mufflers are all the same as the video). I did a before/after decibel test and found that with the stock setup, my mower idled at 102 DB. After adding the sausage muffler to the line it idles at 90 DB. All other factors (time of day, microphone placement) were the same for both tests.

      12 decibels is very significant. The decibel scale is logarithmic, so it's an order of magnitude. Great idea. I doubt it would increase backpressure sufficiently to cause any engine damage.

    keep in mind when you change transmission pulleys, its not designed to spin faster, if its never been opened before, take the time to clean all the nasty old grease out and put fresh gear oil/ grease in. i wrecked a 5 speed peerless once because it had the 15 year old original nasty grease in it. dynamarks are my fav brand of tractors, theyre easy to maintain, the deck has one pin holding it in.

    Eric, How wonderfully inventive! I wish you had spent more time detailing what you did to modify the front muffler. I have the same engine and mower layout. This makes a perfect mod for a mower that will never see a deck again.

      @FarpointFarms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good news. If you watch my video on the Harbor Freight welder I bought, I actually use it to weld that front muffler up. Take a look, I suck at welding, but it shows close ups of that front muffler and the mods I made ot it to make it work.

  • @packofhounds
    @packofhounds 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    He leveraged the welded output side of the front muffler @ 6:22 and then bent it back in line right after. It was compromised at that point and he knew it but kept going. Hence the "sniff" of panic @ 6:34. The entire welded on nipple cracked @ 6:41. Probably the reason for the edit at 6:48. I think the cracked muffler output is the reason he didn't start it.

    I posted on another video about finding a motorcycle muffler. I have an antique Sears Suburban with a cast iron Briggs 14 horse on it. It was way too loud a d after plumbing in that muffler and facing it downward along the grill it has a decent tone that is relaxing now. I've never been to one but would assume a Harley shop would have tons of muffles piled up because most have the factory mufflers dropped before riding home.

      You can change the pulley set from engine to transmission but be careful to fast will result in loss of power and overheating and failure of the transmission. To do this slightly larger pulley on the engine and smaller
      " in relation to engine" on the transmission. Careful about turning hydrostatic transmissions to fast they normally crash

    We've got a old Poulon Pro that was a similar case. My brother gave up on it and dropped it off as scrap as the deck was rotten and it burned oil. It sat for a couple years, then I decided to resurrect it to drag a trailer around the property. I've noticed it's gotten a bit overly loud lately, and when I took a loot at the muffler, I found it rusted completely in half. I can buy a new muffler for $40, or I can build one out of the heaps of scrap laying around. Unsure which option I will take. The tractor will be getting a custom front bumper/grill as my father ran it into a tree and smashed the original plastic grill. I'm thinking a MadMax style replacement to the original, of material that won't break again. Additionally the new muffler will be getting a new guard/skid plate as the original has taken a beating.

      More useless trivia:
      Tiny Tim popularized the song "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" that was originally performed in a movie called "Gold Diggers of Broadway" back in the 1920.
      Another old song made famous in recent years by Dick Martin in a movie called "The Jerk" was "Tonight You Belong to Me" was written back in 1952 and popularized by two young girls in 1955 called Patience and Prudence.
      Both of these songs were thought by a huge part of the population to be written for the movies that they were in.
      There are many other examples of popular songs being much much older than most people had any idea of.
      Both original songs can be found on TH-cam by their original performers.
      I told you it was useless information. 😃😁😉🙄

    Yeah, older lawn tractors are kinda like a poor mans atv. I’ve got 4-5 of em. 4 of em are garden tractors. All of my mowers don’t mow the lawn anymore. I’ve found that w ones that are rly old parts are $ to get em to mow, so if I save the $ I’d sped getting it to mow I can have another tractor, if better yet get a tractor that already cuts grass. Idk abt if the engine is crappy if I get it cheap enough I’ll just drop another motor in it. Just. I Kohler Courage, & brigs 17-21hp single cylinder… they’re trash. Brigs intec motors are pretty good.

    Ok I understand that everyone would have liked to hear a before and after of this setup, the problem is that on camera it is near impossible to tell the difference. The little mic that's on my camera cuts down on loud noises and amps up quiet ones, so it sounds about the same to it. But in real life I would say its sound level has been reduced by at least 60%. Its not wisper quiet, but there is no point to trying to shut it up any further. Its quiet enough now that other sounds the beast makes are louder. I hear the mechanical portions of the engine and more so the transmission way more then the exhaust now. Actually the trans is really noisy at higher speeds. almost too loud.

      With the camera, you can use a reference point. Yes, they all have audio limiters in them, so a comparison would entail having 2 audio sources. Engine one, and you speaking (or YELLING, as it were) the other. Obviously you would have to yell over the engine noise in the before. In the after, it can be heard the difference in the level of your voice to overcome the engine noise. It's something you'd have to record and play back a time or two to get the best comparison.

    I had this sears mower with a Tecumseh engine that I found in a little illegal dump up the rode from my house where I always rode my dirt bike. We always picked it. Hell we even found around 3000 8 inch block that was new one time. Anyhow I was about 10 and the only thing we found wrong with the mower was the handle was rusted and it was missing the exhaust and governor linkage. So I put a new handle on it, wired it wide open and put about an 6 inch piece black pipe for an exhaust. Boy I'm glad I had really good neighbors because that sucker was LOUD AF. It worked until a few years ago when it finally flew apart in my fathers front yard.

    May I recommend header-wrapping the pipe that goes underneath the running board? Even that small Briggs and Stratton engine is going to heat that exhaust system incredibly hot, which could make the running board too hot to touch. With the hood down, it looks almost factory!

    Kids... If you are reading this.... DO NOT do it! The Muffler used in this Video is rated for 8HP Engines or less. Any Engines that is 8HP+, you can do it, but Pipes and Muffler would have to be bigger or your HP will be robbed!

I ask cuz I was trying to find exhaust pipes and connectors, but with no luck. Any help much appreciated, pls bear in mind I'm in UK not NA

    Doesn’t that rob some Horse Power? I’d love to quiet down my two pull behind gas mowers. One is a vanguard engine 23 hp and one is a kohler 25 hp and they are way too loud. The Diesel 72” JD f935 I pull them with is quiter but would like to quiet it as well...but if it robs too much HP then can’t do it...

      - You are 100% correct! The Muffler that he used is " Rated " for 8HP or less. Anything that is bigger than that, would need a bigger Muffler.

  • @jacquespoirier9071

    silencing the engine is a good idea, exiting the exhaust so near of the operator is a bad idea as fumes will poison him.
    typically, an air cooled engine runs on a rich mixture to control temperature and a rich mixture produce carbon monoxyde in huge quantity.

    Plumbing pipe eventually shrinks from the heat and rattles inside the threads for the muffler. So when you have elbows and a set route for the exhaust how do you deal with the rattling pipe?

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this setup it's been the opposite issue. the threads all rusted and locked up tight. I can't get any of it apart to work on anything.

    Can you tell the reduction in decibels that this modifications achieved? I was always searching for something like this because the mowers always are about 95-105 decibels which is terribly noisy.

    • @FarpointFarms

    its been a year ..is it still running or did you burn a valve by pointing the exhaust down. small engines do not have enough to force heat out of a long down pointed pipe.. believe me. experience is quite exspensive

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      She's still running! I left the unit outside last year, and this spring it starts and runs, but the steering is rusted up and hard top turn. I just picked up another mower to make into a new "Poor man's ATV" so we will start again. I took the head off to replace the head gasket last fall and the valves looked fine.
