Interesting to watch and hear your reactions to this video. I discovered Larkin Poe by this same video in July 2023, two days after losing a close relative to dementia. I thought then, 'what have I found here, and why now ?'. Maybe understandably after my loss, I wept hearing this, but have since become a huge fan and follower of their music. I saw them live in concert in London in October , where Megan introduced this song, making it my highlight of a brilliant show. Better still, I've also booked to see them again in July. As others have commented, any chance to see them in live performances is a must.
Your thoughts on the different musical tempos made a lot of sense. You should know these girls are sisters. They have an extensive catalog. Check out their cover of wicked game.
Thank you for checking out the wonderful Lovell sisters Rebecca, lead and mandolin, Megan, lap steel and backing vocals. They are a totally self run band, they own their own record label, produce their own recordings, etc... Their sound has changed over the years. Originally, the sisters started in a band with their older sister Jessica, the bluegrass band The Lovell Sisters. After Jessica left to pursue other interests, Rebecca and Megan formed Larkin Poe. In the beginning, it was a very folkish style, then more swampy rock, then morphed into the current blues rock they've been since 2017's "Peach" album. This performance is in one of the transitions, when Rebecca was switching between mandolin and guitar. The song wasn't on an album until the live album "Paint The Roses", which is the one on their channel, and features the chamber orchestra Nu Deco Ensemble. I heartily recommend watching that one, even if you don't react to it. One of their items of merch is a "Paint The Roses" necklace, with proceeds going to mental health initiatives. As independent artists, they still have opened for bands such as Queen and Bob Seger, and performed for many others. As to stuff to check out, any of it. They have a covers list on their TH-cam channel, pick a song you like. They are done usually with a simple setup, often just on a phone. Many of their covers I prefer to the originals. All the blend you hear on their voices is how they are in real time, it's stunning to behold. Live, there are few bands more genuine and warm, everyone becomes family.
Aloha @FAR, Larkin Poe 2 sisters, the Lovell sisters, have been independent artists since 2010. 6 EPs, 7 albums, Larkin Poe is an American roots blues rock band. Rebecca(guitars, mandolin, banjo, keys, digital programming and lead vocals) and Megan(lap steel slide, dobro and harmony vocals) have their TH-cam channel with many original songs as well as covers. Their recordings are predominately produced by just the two, occasionally featuring a guest, but when they go on tour, they will have bass and drums support. They are now performing around the US and later this year the EU/UK again. Nominated for a Grammy in 2019(Venom and Faith), and Grammy winners for Best Contemporary Blues Album 2024. Their parents are not musicians but music lovers. There are 3 sisters, their eldest Jessica, were all classically trained in piano and violin, plus choir practice. By the time they became teenagers, they were exposed to Bluegrass, being that they were born in Tennessee and raised in N. Georgia. They created The Lovell Sisters band and recorded 2 albums, touring all over the US and Europe. Jessica quit the band in 2009, and Megan and Rebecca decided to continue as Larkin Poe, named after their 5th great grandfather, Larkin Haskew Poe, a distant cousin of Edgar Allan Poe. Since you enjoyed MAAH, please check out this clip from the same Convent Club gig 2016. This is actually 2 songs - “Tom Devil” was first recorded by Ed Lewis, which segues into an original song “I Hate You For The Way...” th-cam.com/video/hpTe3IXy3QM/w-d-xo.html Cheers!
This song hits me in the feels every time. These ladies are so good at painting a picture with music. Thank you for reacting, and the person that asked you to react as well.
Thanks, for the reaction. I am already a fan of theirs and they have lots of great music. Their current album Blood Harmony won the Grammy this year for best modern blues album. The title track would be a good choice for a reaction video.
Thanks for reacting to my request. I really appreciate your honest, emotional and thoughtful insights❤.These ladies are incredibly talented and as others have said have an extensive catalogue of covers and originals spanning many genres and decades, all worth checking out.
Larkin Poe are awesome, Megan and Rebecca sisters - their harmonies are just gorgeous. Both are great on guitar too. There are some great performances from them out there - the jam in the van sessions and any of their covers. Rebecca's husband Tyler Bryant is also worth checking out.
Nice reaction. You know the band is good when you forget what you're doing and get lost in the music ;). They just won a Grammy (Contemporary Blues Album) for Blood Harmony. MAAH is pretty strong medicine; I'd be willing to bet there are very, very few people who aren't affected by mental illness to some degree. Try Preachin' Blues for something a bit lighter. Check out their Rockpalast concert vids to see them live.
I know most of the other comments here seem to be from people who are already fans of the band but anyone who hasn't seen the collaboration with Nu Deco Ensemble should watch it and compare. It's a beautiful arrangement. I specifically requested this version as Megan explains the story behind the song. Also, Rebecca plays it on the mandolin rather than guitar as she does when it's played on stage nowadays and I think this sounds fits the song so well. Anyone who hasn't seen this band live should really take the opportunity if they play near you and you are able to go
Thanks for sharing your honesty and insights on this one! I discovered them shortly after my grandmother passed away (no mental issues fortunately) so this hit me like a ton of bricks and still makes me emotional almost every time I listen to it. Larkin Poe and the Warning are my absolute favorite bands so guess I'm a sucker for sibling magic in my musical preferences. 😋They have tons of originals, lives, covers and just like TW their journey is very well documented on youtube. Definitely go see them live if you can! Here is an encore from one of their shows were they performed with their husbands who are also accomplished musicians: th-cam.com/video/8zmg3Q9hGko/w-d-xo.html
Larkin Poe is so much better than the recognition they get. It's too bad. I've enjoyed every song of theirs I've heard. And it's sad that so many people are missing out on hearing them. Edit: You should really check out their cover of Knights in White Satin. It's just the two sisters doing it and it's surprisingly awesome. Justin Haywood even commented how much he liked it. If anybody's interested. . . th-cam.com/video/5yGhbIwG-3U/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUsbGFya2luIHBvZSBtb29keSBibHVlcyBuaWdodHMgaW4gd2hpdGUgc2F0aW4%3D
Your reaction to this video reminded of a song by the, Late...Great, Conway Twitty (She needs someone to hold her when she cries). I think my term of endearment for you will be Cheesecake, I can never get enough Cheesecake.
