I'm currently putting out a lot of stuff about improving as a singer on my website singwell.eu. So if you want to become a better singer, that's for you.
Henk is 63 and he used distortion for the second time in his life, he said it was a big no no for Opera singers, First time he did it with "The Sound Of Silence" on this show for Floor 👀
Gosh you look gorgeous, great video analysis. Since you have a lot of experience in opera music I strongly suggest Ulisse with Aída Garifúllina at VTB Arena
@@mandymaessen-vandelaar2404 Linor is giving her opinion from her years of vocal training and studies. I just discovered Renee Fleming..go listen to THAT voice. Linor was just being very honest..Opera singers are vocal masters..it's unbelievable the amount of training to create the right sounds flawlessly.. Floor is one of the best singers I've ever heard..but she's NOT a expert Opera singer.. If Floor went the full opera route I'm sure she would be up there but not yet.. Now listen to this ladies high note at the end... th-cam.com/video/cdrvTRtN8tQ/w-d-xo.html
Please feel free to just say you've heard better. Floor is not an opera singer. Henk has been her idol as a kid, and she really wanted to do this rendition of the song she usually plays with her band Nightwish with her idol from opera. This was basically a guilty pleasure, and I think they both sounded and acted amazing. Love that it's mostly for fun.
I don't know why people are so negative about saying "This isn't the best version of something" like it could still be very very good, but if you've heard better somewhere... Like there are so many performances and chances are that somewhere there is a better one.
What I Love about Floor's VOICE and Style is that it's a sort of Hybrid. This Versatility is what makes her Singing so Captivating. Unlike her NIGHTWISH predecessors Who were stylistically Limited. Floor is Dynamic, Capable & Beautifully Versatile...that's Why She's brought Tuomas' songs to their highest level of expression.
Her tone is absolutely beautiful, their spin on this is the best I've ever heard . Love their chemistry. She's a soprano goddess.. She can sing anything and live she will blow your mind ! Such a power house .
To answer your question about the end of the second verse, where they are singing together: Floor is up a full step from the original key, while Henk is singing in the original key. By the way, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Phantom composer, is reported as saying that the only person he could see ever playing the Phantom is Henk Poort.
What i like best about this adjusted version (NightWish arrangement) is that Floor the Metal Queen, stays in a more classical routine, while its the Opera star Henk, who opens up the "Rock tabs" so to speak, switching the roles they normally would have. They indeed started this in a slightly lower range, likely to bring that darker atmosphere, and as a bit of a safety measure, Floor can hold D6 with ease (she did here) but the original E6, is still in her reach btw, but its not a note you always hit, no matter how good one is. And (not the case here) in the musical itself, the high E6 is actually recorded, and rarely sung live because its a killer on the vocal cords and near impossible to pull of night after night, so its a sort of safety measure.(fun facts lol) I love how Floor and Henk are in character for this performance, and it was very visible they had a great time doing it :) Thnx for the upload Linor :D
IMHOin this case it is also more that it follows up a long build up that isn't easy to do at all either. If all she had to do is that one end scream, I am certain she could hve hit an E6, but in this case it likely were too risky to attempt, and prolly wouldn't last nearly as long as this D6 either.
@@TerranigmaQuintet yes, i have no doubt Floor could hit the E6, but she didnt need to go for it, the arrangement was perfect as it was for me, and the 8 or 9 seconds D6? makes up for any 3 seconds E6 :P
Christines part at the beginning is actually up the octave from the original ;) i can't comment on single notes later in the piece though, as i'm just an amateur sound tech without perfect pitch, so i would need my tools for that ;)
Floor and Henk had a short amount of time to make this song their own. Not months and months of rehearsing or whatever. I think it was awesome. Floor is a metal singer with an incredable voice. Her pitch was D6 I heard from another vocal coach. Henk performed the role of the Phantom a few years but that was in the early 90S. To perform it in this way was one of the best live performances I have heard in years. But to each their own. If you were not blown away by it, I respect that.
Yeah perfect comment. Who expects a metal queen and a musical king to do the same boring thing that’s been sung the same way for 1000 years. This is basically a cover song, and those should always be made to be YOUR OWN spin on it. That’s how I see it anyway. And the fact that hank learned distortion to sing this THEIR WAY, shit that’s like the sweetest and coolest thing ever. She was beaming and over the moon doing this with him. And I’m so glad they continue to do it when she’s touring solo at home. I mean who gets to be best friends with their idol from when they were little.
Just to clarify Floor has never cataloged herself as an opera or classical singer, in fact ..she said she doesn't feel very comfortable and only does it when she really feels it. Floor is soprano, but she never wanted to stagnate his voice in a single style and that's why she has an extremely wide vocal range in a one song she uses his voice in different vocal ranges her versatility is what fans most admire about her and his stage presence .
Seeing what the program is about, what kind of band she plays in and what he asked as return for doing the duet...it's amazing. If she wanted to do a opera version it would be boring and Henk would do what he always does, that's not what the program is about.. th-cam.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/w-d-xo.html but she can do it..
@@monsterhunterrivi6303 "live" lol. But yes, it's amazing but I wasn't really happy when I heard she was going to do this. It will never be as good as a opera singer and she could have done something way more spectacular imho.
Linor, don't be afraid to speak out. That's what I expect from voice teachers and professional singers. To give their true opinion. The only thing is, you say 'I heard better' and then it stopped... I hoped you also would explain compared to what or whom or in which way. That's the information I like to hear. Same goes for Henk when you see "not the freeest i've ever heard. It may be my lack of knowledge of the singing techniques, but iI don't know what you mean by that.I would love to have some more clarification. For the rest, keep up the good work.
I hate leaving you hanging like this not knowing what I meant. Thanks for the encouragement BTW. I thought, and said indirectly, that she was not really singing fully and letting her voice flow. You can see that in her jaw which sometimes shakes. About Henk, it sounds like his vibrato (and his voice in general) is made with some effort, while the kind that I prefer is when there is free airflow and the sounds just vibrates on its own without extra tension :) Hope this helps
I totally agree, I can watch a bunch of other ‘reactors’ and hear how they loved it as much as I do, but with vocal coaches and singers, I want to hear a full opinion. On the other hand, I also understand how toxic the comment sections can get. Especially when it’s someone and a performance they loved. I enjoyed your reaction, and appreciated your follow-up comment to the question in this thread. Keep being honest about how you’re feeling and hearing what you’re watching/listening to. I’ll take an honest critique over someone trying to please the fan base anytime.
Thank you for this reaction! I’ve been looking forward to it since this song was released. I agree with you 💯. This isn’t the best operatic version I’ve heard, but this isn’t an operatic version, it’s a rock version done by a metal singer with (by her own admission) minimal classical training. What an amazing performance by Floor & Henk. A stunning rendition which left its immediate audience stunned & standing. Bravo! ❤️
Floor has never claimed to be an opera singer. She only has 1 year of classical training and by her own admission doesn't really enjoy doing it. I personally couldn't be happier that she stays away from a lot of classical singing because I can only take it in small doses. I definitely like it more than growling, but if she never did either again I would be ok with it. As a final note this, to me, is the most entertaining performance of this song I've ever seen and I've seen the North America tour twice and many others performances on TH-cam. In this performance they really made a connection and took a unique approach which is what I look for in live performances. I can hear the original anytime so why should I settle for someone reproducing it in exact detail. If Floor did that we wouldn't have got the last note for an eight count and that was absolutely kickass!
Yeah. Her opera training is purely for technique and for something to interject into her normal music. She uses it to great effect, but she doesn't enjoy doing it too much.
I don't know where this "information" comes from that she doesn't like or enjoy singing in this style. In fact she quite recently stated that she enjoys singing in the "classical style" quite a lot, but she only uses it where she thinks it fits in. She only mentioned on several occasions that she doesn't particularly like classical music as such, where I think this mostly refers to listening to it. She used this singing style a lot in After Forever and ReVamp, where she had at least part control over the songwriting (in ReVamp she was the "creative director"), so it was really up to her to do it or not, and I'm pretty sure no one forced her ;) Her latest statement was that by her performances in Beste Zangers (this one and the Vilja-Lied in particular) she hopes to give a bit of "candy" to those fans who keep complaining that she doesn't use this style enough in Nightwish.
She start the show with the Vilja song in german and she even sings O Mio Babbino Caro on tv and from the gamecube game Final Fantasy Chronicals she sings Sound of the Wind...
I really like how Floor is singing the (and acting out) the "back" in the line "Those who have seen your face, draw back in fear." That really did it for me. I really like their chemistry on stage, and I am one of the lucky ones who will hopefully get to experience it live next year at the Nightwish concert in Amsterdam! A year more to wait, but looking forward to it!
Henk used that distortion in his voice for the first time ever in this show. First in singing the "Disturbed" arrangement of Simon & Garfunkle's "The Sound of Silence" for Floor in her featured episode, (Henk admitted how nervous he was about that), then here echoing the Nightwish version of "Phantom".
Henk Poort has acording to himself sdone 30 Operas, 26 Operettas and about 10 musicals and some acting, Ever since Floor heared him sing in the dutch "Phantom" she has been a fangirl 😍🐱👤👍 He is a Bariton but alsoo sings Tenor when the part asks for it. He has lived in Italy for 15 years and met Andrea Bocelli there, before he was famous I think.
Linor, don’t be afraid to say you don’t like it. Wrong key in some parts, you heard better performances, etc. It’s ok. What you have to understand is that this is Nightwish arrangements . Many people like it, I like it, others don’t. So what. Cheers 🥂
yeah, i think knowing it is a very different version, purposely, in a lit of ways helps fans of the original accept this as uts own, different experience.
She is not afraid to say her mind ... which is ... in a lack for better words .. WrONG!. Why on EARTH would anyone try to copy the EXACT original arrangement of a song? She is obsessed with only accepting original version of songs. She hated Disturbed's version of "sound of silence" .. because she likes Paul Simon ... - But failed to recognize that the most part of that song is Art Garfunkels voice?! She is a wannabe and a person I have NO respect for at all. And I have watched a lot of voice coaches react videos. I would opt for her videos not to show up in my feeds ... if it was possible. Maybe in the future we can have such channels like this to be shown less ..
This was just them having fun for the show. They put on a great dramatic performance, and got out of their comfort zones. Henk is an idol of Floor's. Henk's Sound of Silence is one of the best highlights from this show.
Honesty is the best policy & I'm sure every true music lover can take it. Also, as this wasn't the original Andrew Lloyd Webber, but Nightwish's metal version of the song, I guess they had to adjust their vocals accordingly.
I love when classical singers review this arrangement, when Henk breaks out the distortion. The look on their faces... :) And it really fits the mood, brings out the "angry" in Henk, which just sells it. A lot of people already knew how flexible Floor's singing is, but Henk showed on this program that he is just as skilled with different styles.
I personally think a lot of Floor fans are idolizing Floor way too much. As if she is the only female singer that is versatile. I believe that a lot of good singers can be versatile as well, it is a matter of trying and dare to step out of their comfortzone. Being versatile is not that big of a deal.
@@komkwam I don't think that Floor is the ONLY versatile vocalist. HOWEVER, I believe her to be THE MOST versatile in the world. her upbringing has some to do with it, she has found herself in a very unique position. IF Floor agreed to go to some worldwide competition where the weather was perfect, nobody was sick, etc, and it was meant to show off versatility and NOT specialization, then Floor wins that competition for the Ladies. For the guys, I give that to Dimash, of course.
@@komkwam Ridiculous? Okay fine. Now, PROVE IT. Give me links for someone you think is MORE VERSATILE of a vocalist. Otherwise, your statement is just as ridiculous. My proof is already out there, everybody knows how to find videos of Floor doing her thing. Now it's your turn.
Experience is the best way to describe this presentation. I appreciate that you could get very technical and picky but as you said the experience here of Floor singing with one of her idols and Henk clearly having a blast doing this duet who cares. They were really in character here and Floor's limited musical theater training always shows even when she is playing with Nightwish in front of 80,000+ fans like at Wacken, as she is always animated and using her hands arms and head (nobody windmills better than Floor). Great reaction and this was the Nightwish score from 2005 (Tarja and Marco) that the studio band used I believe. Hey shout out to this band as they were great on this show doing different genres and always made those songs from different vocalists sound perfect.Sorry this show is over, I like many I came for Floor and was stunned by her presentations but also loved the studio band, the other professionals were great as well and the back stories and how they interacted with one another was real entertainment.
You are the most critical singing coach I have seen. I think that is very good indeed. mainly because the criticism is grounded in reality even if I don't always agree
WAs waiting for this one for a while. Love your stuff Miss and love your honesty. Saying "I've heard better" is perfectly normal. Respect your opinion a lot. Hope you do some Nightwish stuff at one point :D
I loved your reaction. You were honest and gave your professional opinion. It's important to understand that Floor didn't give the best ever performance of the song, but that she did a fantastic version within her style. She's not an opera singer, but can sing opera. There are probably better versions of this song, but Floor's versatility shines through when you realize she can sing, pop, rock, metal.etc as well.
What I really like about this video is that you are real do critic's on the video. I have absolutely no pitch and wanna thank you for telling me the pitch of the last tone!
I feel you are most honest person doing this reactions. I'm huge Floor fan, but I like how you are not impressed 😄 Keep giving us more rock/metal reactions... I wanna hear what you have to say 👌🏻
A week and noone ... really? Unless you are being sarcastic here acting like you haven't heard the term, it is called a Floorgasm. If so, I bit ... so +1 on the 'troll' post! ;) LOL
I actually come here because you are ... picky. It makes me understand the music more. This version was the Nightwish version, which is indeed slightly different from the original.Henk is 63 now, he did the Phantom around 1994. He took a two-hour lesson to learn the distortion technique for Sound of Silence, earlier in the show.
To add on, Henk only agreed to do this duet if he got to join Nightwish when they are in the Netherlands on the next tour. I believe he’s also going to be at the 6 (I think it was 6) solo shows Floor is doing in the next few months, as is the house band (their name escapes me at the moment). As much as I enjoyed this version, I’m really interested in hearing Marco and Floor performing the NW arrangement. I am curious to see if Henk can master the distortion he was using.
@@syyneater The solo shows are now up to 12 now. They all sold out within 24 hours. Lets hope Nightwish brings out the camera crew to the Ziggo dome shows. Since they added a second show there as well. Damn I wish I lived in Europe.
"I've heard better". Indeed, there are better female opera singers. And maybe this performance was more a metal version. But how many of those better female opera singers can also add a proper distortion to their singing voice? And how many of them can do proper growls? Most of them (if not all) are simply stuck in their opera voice. Not to mention stage presence before 80K+ people. It's hard to compete with a 6'1" versatile singer who can do it all.
Practice, versatility, and a heavy focus on physical and vocal health is what makes Floor Jansen one of the best singers in the world. She is not an opera singer, but for a rock singer she sounds pretty darn good singing opera!
@Klojum, did she hurt your love? I have Floor as one of my favorite singers. But come on! She did a great job on this but it was not a master piece. But I must say that I really like Floor as a singer, her ability to go from style to style and do it great. The growl thing I dont know I'm no expert on that. But I think she sounds great.
@@FERNANDOAUGUSTO-fv1ck i prefer this version. And i hope that next year Henk Poort will do this duet with Floor and Nightwish in the Ziggodome Amsterdam and i know for sure that will be a better version than what you mention.
I like how everyone adds something new and something extra to their reactions. With everyone looking at different aspects of the performance it becomes possible to break it down and even learn a bit from it. I don't sing, and I can't sing either, but somehow I feel like I'm at least learning the theory this way haha. Thanks for your reaction. It was fun to watch and see your take on it.
On another channel, someone added that Henk asked to perform this at a Nightwish concert with her. How much proof can there be that they both enjoyed it? And I think this joy was transported to us listeners. It was mid of the contest on tv, when I came to know about it. Watched every episode with a smile. Well deserved, Floor! The other episodes are well worth watching, too!
What I love most about FLOOR'S singing is her Versatility. She is capable of doing so much Stylistically AND spectacularly. In one song..she can bring a structured classical style..then ethereal softness..then Belting..then Full Out Rock DIVA. She's a Total Singer. That's why she's brought so many of Tuomas' songs to their Highest level. FLOOR is NOT Limited. She's capable of being Electrifying.💯
I know some people wont like that you did not like the beginning, BUT I like that you speak your opinion. I am happy to see in the end that you did however enjoy it. Henk said on the show that adding the distortion to his voice was very hard, and he would be fired immediately if he tried doing it on stage. They changed it up to a more metal version of the song and I respect him so much for taking a leap out of his comfort zone!
Floor was introduced as a Metal singer in the beginning if the series of shows. That's why the reaction from the other singers. They were not expecting her to sing classical. She really opened up everyone's eyes and ears in her home country of the Netherlands. She'd been singing for over 20 years at that point and wasn't very well known in the Netherlands. Now she's very well known.
I was really waiting for your take on this clip because there were a ton of reactions from "vocal coaches" I never heard of who were all just "OMG! That is amazing! This is the best ever!" without giving any additional analysis. The few that are legit all loved it and pointed out especially their stage presence and their connection which you almost didn't mention at all and which captured me emotionally again and again as I was watching this clip over and over since it came out. I appreciate your critical take on the vocal performance! Still, I immediately bought a ticket to see them live in Amsterdam in March and I think this will be awesome!
Yes, finally, I was waiting for you to react to this song. Since I've seen and listen to this WooooooW preformance, I watch a lot of different "Vocal Coaches", don't really know who really is one, or not. I like music very much, if I have the change i listen all day long, and This.....This, This gave me goosbumbs, chickenskin, This Send shivers down my spine ;-) So Thanks for reacting to this Different version of the opera phantom...... And even while I'm Dutch, I'm now looking around for Nightwish, they are Awesome with Floor Jansen.......How is it that I didn't hear from Them or Her before.......Damn..... Grtz from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Great reaction from your perspective, spot on. The "circumstances", background and changes they made are part of the program and quite awesome to me.. but if look at it from a pure phantom way, I agree.
Floor did some classical training, but ended up stopping her lessons. She may draw on the style from time to time, but she doesn't want classical to be her identity and prefers to mix styles. I think she'd probably even agree with what you said that there are better classical versions of the song (I'm sure a mix was her goal here as always). I think people get very defensive of her because of what has happened when Nightwish changed singers. Utterly heinous things were said to all three of the NW singers at various points (Anette received very explicit death threats, even). But something for fans to remember is all three Nightwish singers have publicly supported each other in various small ways. In fact, Floor and Tarja (the one everyone compares her to) have done duets. And I think it's just another case of people trying to pit women against each other to start something. Just my two cents on that.
Henk adds the distortion for rock/metal effect. Henk on beste zangers did a cover of Disturbed's version of the sound of silence. You should analyze that one. He said he was going to do the distortion like disturbed but that kind of effect is frowned up in the opera world he's from. He wanted to branch out and have fun. He sang that to Floor as Sound of Silence was one of Floors favorite songs growing up.
Thank you for your thoughts on the vocals on this song. Do not be afraid to speak your mind on these. People can be really passionate, but I really appreciate the technical aspects you're pointing at and what you thought of the overall experience. I would be curious to see hear your thoughts on the same song performed by Nightwish (as this is the Nightwish score) in their End of an Era tour with their first singer.
He used the distortion in this song for Floor. He also distorted his voice for Floor on his song Sound of Silence by Disturbed he did it for Floor on her turn.
I love this review because in my opinion it's 100% spot on; even the *minor* criticisms. I absolutely *adore* Floor and have come to have a ton of respect for Henk through this show. The best opera singing? No of course not...but it's magical anyway. I love how Floor and Henk "swap styles" as it progresses. She goes more classical; he more metal. And for a guy who had NEVER previously put any distortion/growl into his voice (prior to Beste Zangers and his Sound of Silence) he did a helluva job!!!! It's just flat-out wonderful and utterly exciting, even if not "perfect". I think that's what Linor was trying to convey.
For the record: I thoroughly enjoy this performance by these two fantastic singers. I find it equally hilarious to see how touchy some NW soldiers are when their goddess is not worshipped with the highest praise, while Linor only has a few mild comments and on balance is very positive. You get what it says on the tin: a well-founded professional opinion about a professional performance. Other singing teachers may have a different opinion and this performance may become the most applauded ever, but this is her opinion. I find it downright weak to attack her personally on that.
Nope. This duet, including the Nightwish version of it, was Floor's choice. Henk's demand was that if he agreed to do this duet with Floor he also wanted to sing it with Floor on the Nightwish concert in The Netherlands.
@@joycehill2591, I really hope that performance is professionally recorded. Don't get me wrong, I know Marco has a fantastic voice. I would just really like to see Henk Poort on stage with Nightwish.
You need to see Nightwish version of this song with former singer Tarja Turunen (lyric soprano) from End of an era dvd 2005 ! Floor is amazing singer and i am very happy that she is part of my favorite band \m/ Great reaction!
Good reaction...I always appreciate your honest opinions on performances,it’s refreshing to have a reactor that doesn’t go over the top with gushing praise. Some people in the comments section can’t accept constructive criticism of their idol and are outraged when it’s pointed out that they’re not the worlds best in every type of music.Floor’s my favourite female vocalist and I love the fact that she can dip into so many different genres and styles and do all of them well and some of them very well...but no one can do everything brilliantly, that said I do love this duet and the chemistry that the two of them have.
Watch her reaction to the disturbed version of sound of silence. She was actually a real dick in that video. Laughing at them and everything. There were so many complaints that she watched it a second time. This was better
HI Linor, I say it for years that D6 is better sounding then E6 in this song. I never did hear a couple like this combination (and i had a couple of 20 to 25 live). Its always the man is starting to high or the woman almost crasping to that high note (so less emotion to tell the story), this has such a emotion in the song, they match perfectly
enjoyed your reaction. if any superfans give you grief. Ignore them. in this season, Henk Poort also sang his own version of the Disturbed version of the original Sound of Silence. would love your reaction to that.
The original ends in Eb and starts an octave lower. I think the higher start sounds nicer and adds to the angelic quality. Their chemistry / presence is great.
Dear Linor, i can understand it can be tough for you to comment on a « pop » performance like this one when you have operatic roots and background. But you do it with respect and happily say the things with your handsome smile ! ... yes, you are so professionnal, a pretty and classy woman. Keep on being what you are ! You make a good work. Thank you !
These two will be performing this at a Nightwish gig in the Netherlands some time next year... And it will probably be an epic performance of this with full on power of Nightwish to back up the powerful singing chops these people possess.
1:19 Dude on the right sums up what it's like to listen to Floor Jansen sing in a single image. It should be noted this was only the second time Henk Poort sang with a metal growl. The first time was in an earlier episode when he sang Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence."
Nice:) I wish you said more about how use of microphones impacts performance. I can't imagine the experience of the lucky few on the couch and behind the scenes in the tent who were present to witness this intimate onslaught of awesomeness.
I appreciate your honesty! I think anyone performing this song in 2019 has to know that their take on it won't be the 'best'... So many great artists have already done it. So what else can you do but have fun with it, and they definitely did. :)
Floor's "Vilja Lied" tribute to Henk was the first song performed on Beste Zangers 2019 and her operatic performance stunned the other performers who were not familiar with her when the show began. All they new was that was a singer in a metal band, which is not a popular genre in the Netherlands.
If you where expecting the original your reaction is spot on. They both are able to sing the original no question but it is the nightwish version. Henk is the best still, I saw him in the Dutch version. He was like a father / uncle to all the singers that season. He is funny and professional at the same time. Floor was not wellknown before this program but now she is. She just sang our national anthom at the formule 1 at Zandvoort today and I loved her version.
The great thing about "Beste Zangers" is that the musicians are free how they want to make a song sound and then you get sometimes surprises that you do not expect, that is the power of the "Beste Zangers". look for example Og3ne (Ogeene) they sang a song "Sing" by Ed Sheeran where they applied a kind of rap they called this "echoing" th-cam.com/video/VjbfR9NtnNE/w-d-xo.html note: at the end of their performance (4.40) they explain how this works, they are also famous in the Netherlands for their fantastic harmony.
Totally fair review. You have to look at the context of this recording. And with that in mind it's bloody good. And yes, Henk is older now, and I can hear the difference too between now and 1994 - of course! But wow. It's still a great interpretation and I love how Henk slipped back into his role. I'd you'd put a mask on him he would have been the Phantom. I am lucky to have seen Henk do Phantom live in the theatres. He was so good.
Well they blew me away when I first watched that video. Floor has been fangirling Henk since she was a little girl so there is no surprise at how happy she is singing with him. Now Linor I too have relative perfect pitch in that I cannot tell, listening to a piano, which note is an A flat or a C sharp but I can hear sharps and flats and I do not hear any off-key notes from either Floor or Henk in this performance. Do you hear any? In fact I watched the whole Wacken 2013 concert and she was never off pitch that I could hear and that was her first big concert with Nightwish after Tuomas invited her to sing with them. She had no floor monitors in front of her during Wacken which made her notes even more incredibly perfect so apparently Floor, unlike you and me, does have real perfect pitch. BTW did you notice how much taller Floor is than Henk? She was a competitive bodybuilder in her youth(now retired) and she is 6'2" and at least 200-210lbs. Henk is probably 5'10"-5'11" and stout, maybe similar weight, not sure. I enjoy coming here to watch your videos because you are a good analyst and you have a very strong command of English, with your cute Dutch accent. And besides, you are deliciously pretty, so there's that... :D
Thank you for this video. I am glad you have mentioned something that nobody did - the last note was not clear. I have checked and this should me a half tone higher (D#). I love Floor and Henk since this video has been released and I wish you to check the original Nightwish Phantom of the Opera live performance with Tarja Turunenn. Thank you and wish you the best :)
Yes it was a D# however tho..look at the room that she's in, not a very big space to sing higher the sound will just be muffled not to mention it would sound off completely the D# was suitable in that room. Floor can actually go higher than a D#.
Dear Linor, at Igor Krutoy's birthday concert in Moscow Dimash sang on his own & a little backstage with Andrea Bocelli playing the keyboard & a duet of Ulisse with Aida Garifullina & a trio of Ti Amo Cosi with Aida & Lara Fabian. PLEASE watch & react to as much as you would like & you can find comments from & to Lara & Dimash on Instagram.
You need to be aware that she's sold millions of albums both solo and as parts of bands. Gold and Platinum multi-platinum albums, multiple albums. Floor Jansen is known worldwide. You'll be lucky if you don't get creamed in the comments. She is classically trained. She teaches voice training. She is now known for symphonic metal. Henk is singing in that style with her.
Great reaction. Always enjoy your take on things. It's my understanding this is the Nightwish version of the song, which could account for some of the elements you found unexpected. I'm no expert on Nightwish, but that's what I gathered from comments when this first aired. (Ignorre any cranky feedback you might get. 😃) I would LOVE your reaction to Henk Poort's Sound of Silence on Beste Zangers. First time he ever did distortion, learned it in 2 hours, and was honestly very nervous about it. I really enjoyed his version and would enjoy hearing a classically trained singer's take on it. I became a fan of his through this show - he did a lot of different styles, and they were all gems.
Floor can reach F6 - they didn't do it in D because of her, it's in D because they're (Nightwish) a metal band and guitars sound extra menacing tuned down from E to D, so it's a common tonic for that type of band to write or arrange to.
This is the version of the Phantom of the Opera from Nighwish. ( Metal band) Henk poort is an opera Singer.

This is the Nightwish arrangement of the song. Henk put the distortion in his voice just for Floor. So sweet!
Plus the fact that for the programme format every song must squeezed to 3 minutes.
@jorluo They more or less copied Nightwish arrangement. Nothing wrong with that though :)

@@MegaThexmaster WOW really ??? ;)
@@juhanikyllonen1899 Yaass.
henk is a idol of floor. he is one of te reasons for her to go into music. its just a song among two friends not a classical concour
Besides, they met at the show and just decided to do Phantom. It's not like they practiced together for months for a musical.
Best version ever!
Just so you guys know. I am the best singer in the world and I say that this is the best version ever. So please shut up 😂
Her tone is absolutely beautiful, their spin on this is the best I've ever heard .
In the Dutch rendition of The Phantom, Henk Poort is the actual Phantom of the Opera.
The chemistry here is what make it work. This is not a recital; this is a performance.
And (not the case here) in the musical itself, the high E6 is actually recorded, and rarely sung live because its a killer on the vocal cords and near impossible to pull of night after night, so its a sort of safety measure.(fun facts lol)
I love how Floor and Henk are in character for this performance, and it was very visible they had a great time doing it :)
Thnx for the upload Linor :D
IMHOin this case it is also more that it follows up a long build up that isn't easy to do at all either. If all she had to do is that one end scream, I am certain she could hve hit an E6, but in this case it likely were too risky to attempt, and prolly wouldn't last nearly as long as this D6 either.
@@TerranigmaQuintet yes, i have no doubt Floor could hit the E6, but she didnt need to go for it, the arrangement was perfect as it was for me, and the 8 or 9 seconds D6? makes up for any 3 seconds E6 :P
Christines part at the beginning is actually up the octave from the original ;) i can't comment on single notes later in the piece though, as i'm just an amateur sound tech without perfect pitch, so i would need my tools for that ;)
@@caligo7918 same here :P
Floor and Henk had a short amount of time to make this song their own. Not months and months of rehearsing or whatever. I think it was awesome. Floor is a metal singer with an incredable voice. Her pitch was D6 I heard from another vocal coach. Henk performed the role of the Phantom a few years but that was in the early 90S. To perform it in this way was one of the best live performances I have heard in years. But to each their own. If you were not blown away by it, I respect that.
This show isn't about making a copie of the original version. It's about making their own (fantastic) version.
Just to clarify
Floor has never cataloged herself as an opera or classical singer, in fact ..she said she doesn't feel very comfortable and only does it when she really feels it.
Floor is soprano, but she never wanted to stagnate his voice in a single style and that's why she has an extremely wide vocal range
in a one song she uses his voice in different vocal ranges
her versatility is what fans most admire about her and his stage presence .
Seeing what the program is about, what kind of band she plays in and what he asked as return for doing the duet...it's amazing.
If she wanted to do a opera version it would be boring and Henk would do what he always does, that's not what the program is about.. th-cam.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/w-d-xo.html but she can do it..
versatility, and the crazy amount of power she puts behind it as well and my god does is she good live

@@okidoki878 agree 👍 and I saw one vocal coach who explain about it !
I disagree completely, she used a lot of classical style singing in after forever and it was awesome. Its her versatility that makes her awesome.
She used this singing style a lot in After Forever and ReVamp, where she had at least part control over the songwriting (in ReVamp she was the "creative director"), so it was really up to her to do it or not, and I'm pretty sure no one forced her ;) Her latest statement was that by her performances in Beste Zangers (this one and the Vilja-Lied in particular) she hopes to give a bit of "candy" to those fans who keep complaining that she doesn't use this style enough in Nightwish.
kanker muziek
She start the show with the Vilja song in german and she even sings O Mio Babbino Caro on tv and from the gamecube game Final Fantasy Chronicals she sings Sound of the Wind...
I really like how Floor is singing the (and acting out) the "back" in the line "Those who have seen your face, draw back in fear." That really did it for me. I really like their chemistry on stage, and I am one of the lucky ones who will hopefully get to experience it live next year at the Nightwish concert in Amsterdam! A year more to wait, but looking forward to it!
See you there...november 2020😉
This was a version based on the style of the Nightwish recording, which was done several years ago with the 1st singer from Nightwish.
The Bocelli link was why the duet with Emma Heesters was Vivo Per Lei, I believe.

And it really fits the mood, brings out the "angry" in Henk, which just sells it.

This version was the Nightwish version, which is indeed slightly different from the original.Henk is 63 now, he did the Phantom around 1994.
He took a two-hour lesson to learn the distortion technique for Sound of Silence, earlier in the show.

You got it!
I was hoping so much you would do this one Linor, that was awesome, thank you girl..

Nice:)
I wish you said more about how use of microphones impacts performance.
I can't imagine the experience of the lucky few on the couch and behind the scenes in the tent who were present to witness this intimate onslaught of awesomeness.
I love your critical analysis of their vocals.
All they new was that was a singer in a metal band, which is not a popular genre in the Netherlands.
yup, this is the Nightwish version. Amazing!
Your ear for music is great. Love to see a pro. Respect your opinion
This was nice. Now you have to do Nightwish version, Phantom of the opera (End of an Era).
Praise our Queen Tarja 🙏
second
Amazing!!😍🙃🤟
The great thing about "Beste Zangers" is that the musicians are free how they want to make a song sound and then you get sometimes surprises that you do not expect, that is the power of the "Beste Zangers".
look for example Og3ne (Ogeene) they sang a song "Sing" by Ed Sheeran where they applied a kind of rap they called this "echoing" th-cam.com/video/VjbfR9NtnNE/w-d-xo.html note: at the end of their performance (4.40) they explain how this works, they are also famous in the Netherlands for their fantastic harmony.
The performance might not be the best in the world, but these 2 singers are extremely talented. Love their duet!
I’m a Rocker and I loved it !!!!
She is a voice coach and trained in classical , she is also a metal singer
In that program "De beste zangers'' they give the songs their own twist.
I love your honest reaction, and your pronunciation of the Dutch is very very good btw!
I read the comments first and braced myself for a sourpuss, but got what it says on the tin: an expert opinion. And a positive one at that! Thx.
Yep, her final note wasa D6.
But she went a full 8, not the normal 4 count.
@@davemason4055 Im not talking about how long she held the note. Im talking about what the note IS
You need to be aware that she's sold millions of albums both solo and as parts of bands.
I would LOVE your reaction to Henk Poort's Sound of Silence on Beste Zangers. First time he ever did distortion, learned it in 2 hours, and was honestly very nervous about it. I really enjoyed his version and would enjoy hearing a classically trained singer's take on it. I became a fan of his through this show - he did a lot of different styles, and they were all gems.
The Swinging is very Good..... Yes of course...!
Your Dutch pronunciation is really impressive 😁 ❤from a Dutchie
You must be the only person reviewing this song that isn't totally floored. Pun intended,
This is different because Floor is a metal singer and he was doing it in that style. Nightwish has done this song in metal version before Floor
You look gorgeous. Nice lighting and great video
Now if you heard better you have to share !! OMG please please just as an excuse to listen to this piece again. I hope they are on youtube.
Floor can reach F6 - they didn't do it in D because of her, it's in D because they're (Nightwish) a metal band and guitars sound extra menacing tuned down from E to D, so it's a common tonic for that type of band to write or arrange to.
this is the nightwish version they're singing, not the original

Excactly !
