I know this was 6 months ago but I can't help that this dark time is back. Everything that happened in dresden is happening in Gaza, just at a much larger scale
I want your opinion on this, " Are only powerful are Saint in this world" means America and UK are Bastion of Peace everywhere but even if compared to Nazi their crimes where far more brutal and leagues ahead of them.
I am really afraid that we are more into Hindu Muslim and temple building but in few years the same thing is going to happen to us by Chinese and their allies
Dresden remains one of the most horrific mind numbing war crimes. One can't even imagine what those who perished experienced or what survivors like Kurt Vonnegut, author of Slaughterhouse-Five must have experienced. Thank you this episode.
I would love to know more about the Luddite movement. Nowadays when one raises concerns about AI or automation making many jobs obselete, they are branded as a "Luddite" which is a shorthand for being small minded and anti-progress. But I think it shows a systemic problem of capitalist society lacking social/community safety nets where someone's self worth and survival is tied to a job. I think it would be interesting to know about the backgrounds and aims of the Luddites and generally how people coped with big structural shifts in the economy in 19th century and how different/same it is now/next 20-30 years. Another topic that I would love to hear about is the colonisation of China by the European powers. How similar/different were the tactics used by the Europeans in China vis a vis India.
Watched 2 episodes of yours today- Devadasis and Dresden- absolutely brilliant. Would be amazing if you could start a world war series. More power to you!
Was always fascinated by WW 2..Hitler, Eisenhower, Rommel, Heydrich, Goring, Churchill, Goebell, .....so many actors on that military stage! Look forward to this series...thanks!
First of all Dr Sharma, I love your videos and channel. You’re doing awesome things, especially given conditions in the Indian cybersphere and popular ‘history’ space. Although not a historian (I am a journalist) I am a WWII and military history enthusiast and would be glad if you could spend a bit of your time on certain grouses I have with this video (your only one on WWII so far as I can tell). 1. The choice of starting with Dresden as an atrocity or war crime. While no doubt horrendous, I think the perspective on the stage of the war would be useful. I would have loved if you began with Stalingrad, but anyway, your channel. It’s just a shame because your Indian audience will likely not be too familiar with the context given the history syllabi in schools. 2. By 1945, the Luftwaffe was more or less beaten and thus bombing raids by the RAF were suddenly almost uncontested. The Dresden raid came up against little to no fighter and antiaircraft resistance and thus were able to put their bombs on target (or close). The important railway marshalling yards you spoke of were very close to the Dresden old town (densely populated area). Dresden was also hit (apart from the intention of blocking the highways with refugees) because it was relatively undamaged, being in the east and at the far end of the range of bombers. The introduction of the longer ranged Mustangs for escort duty towards the end of the war made it possible. Of course the more eastern location was also why the Germans had neglected to provide air raid shelters. The accuracy of bombs in the earlier parts of the war also terrible (being forced to drop from higher in order to escape the fighters that the luftwaffe would scramble). 3. The Germans had also stripped their antiaircraft batteries of the 88mm gun which was being used against Soviet tanks as the eastern front got closer to Germany. 4. You really shouldn’t shit so much on Bomber Harris. His command had taken horrific losses when the Luftwaffe were still flying. They lost 55,000 men killed out of 125,000 aircrew in WWII or 44%, the highest rate for any combat arm I think. I suppose his insistence on ‘area bombing’ was his way of trying to end the war. Average age of aircrew killed: 22 years. This was also something of a military man trying to do his job to the best of his ability within the constraints imposed by the political leadership. (Churchill trying his best to postpone the cross channel invasion because of his Gallipoli fiasco, the US delaying the second front in favour of North Africa while the Soviets were paying the butcher’s bill) 5. While Goebbels was pulling off his Dresden PR blitz in the Western press, (I think he claimed 400,000 dead in Dresden) the Nazis were still running trains to death camps. Auschwitz had just been liberated a couple of weeks earlier. The Nazis had pioneered the targeting of civilians so that they would flood the roads as a way to slow down military movements in Belgium and France in 1940, with terror strafing and bombing. Of course, the German treatment of Soviet civilians was horrific and the numbers murdered are literally unknowable. 6. You say “the relentless Red Army, the largest in the world at this time” but you fail to mention that they had already lost more soldiers killed than were in the Red Army in 1945 (8 million dead to about 5 million serving in 1945)
@@eyeshadowetihaaswithruchika I might sound like a little bit demanding 😅😅😅 But when you will be covering mentioned topic then do consider Soviet invasion of Japan and further occupation of Manchuria by Soviets which is least discussed and is ignored as that invasion has no significance. It would be really great.
If u turn the pages of history it will unfold many of such horrendous crimes committed against humanity and those leaders on such world stage has been depicted as great men of valour, courage and heroism.Even the same act has been repeated in west Asia and Ukraine. In the preamble of UN it runs like this 'if war starts in d minds of men it is in these minds then the defence of peace must b constructed' All war brings Misery only

So vivid ,like watching first hand , heart wrenching. Tears in eyes , thinking of present identical happenings .
Dresden will always tell us about the war time horrors committed by United Kingdom and USA. What is so great about the great Britain then?
Lol!
😂
Fantastic episode. This channel brings me joy of relearning history. I hope these educational content reaches many more people.
Thank you!

This is great initiative. War time histories are very interesting. I barely knew about Dresden air bombing, thanks for this
Thank you!
Heart wrenching. And still these powerful leaders dont understand, their ego kills innocents

So, Israel is only copying what allied forces did , how unoriginal !
I'm disappointed with the chosen race .

Can you do a video on Tokyo Bombing prior to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which claimed thousands of lives and made another hundreds of thousands refugees.
Thanks for the suggestion

Dark history. I wasn't expecting it. Dark history reminds me of dark events like Holodomor.

Absolutely, while the Nazi destruction is rightly condemned and talked about, the Allied destruction is hardly spoken of.
