Yes, people are shopping at the Dollar Tree, and YES aldi is right there, but Pelham Gardens is by NO MEANS a food desert or swamp and there's no "food insecurity". I don't drive, I take public transportation or walk everywhere. The closest Stop & Shop is 1.6 miles from where I am. That may sound far, but it's a very short bus ride away. 15 minutes on a bus is a quicker ride than we think. There was another but it recently closed. There's also a Foodtown that's 0.7 miles away. Again, according to this report, that's "far" but in reality, it's a 5 minute bus ride up the block. There's also Instacart and I use it on days where I don't feel like leaving the house. Being more than 0.5 a mile in NYC, at least in the neighborhoods they're featuring in this report (Baychester, Pelham Gardens, High Bridge) is not a long distance. It's more than a doable distance for families and single people alike. Growing up, we either walked to Boston Road (10 minute walk), or take the bus to Bay Plaza (16 minute ride). If you had a lot of bags, you just took a cab back. It wasn't a big deal. We never felt like we were going out of our way, because it was easily accessible and a short bus ride. Wow talk about a news story promoting laziness. We have never been more saturated with a varietly of stores near each other than we have been for the past twenty years or so. I have at least four very profitable supermarket chains within a measly five to ten minute walk all surrounded by a huge wild life style parkland area in the Bronx Mosholu Parkway area. On top of this there are multiple video game stores, malls, clothing and electronics shops, mom and pop stores of all sorts every single one within walking distance yet with trains and buses every few blocks for those who are up there in age or disabled in some way who are unable to walk it. This compared to the early 1990's when i used to have to take a train all the way down town to Chambers street to buy a computer video game at the sadly now gone J&R Computer World. Glad my mom taught me the joy and benefits of walking long distances when i was child back in the 1970's walking us for hours in hot summer weather from the Day Care Center that was miles away during New Yorks major financial crisis back then. Oh yea and lets not forget how the internet has made things even more comfortable with door to door delivery of humongous gorgeous looking movies, video games etc streamed or installed right to the entertainment devices of our choice at any hour of the day no matter the weather.

I have a solution to solve this problem INDEFINITELY 1. Legalize driving without insurance (half a mile is nothing if you can drive but it's hell if you have to walk not to mention that insurance requirement prevents poorer people from driving) 2. Only those who live in an apartment complex should be able to park on that block (no sense in just anyone taking those parking spaces when people need to buy food) 3. Tax the poor less (tips up to a certain amount shouldn't be taxes as well as your first few dollars that you need to survive.... if the poverty line is $10k and you only make $10k it makes no sense to tax you on that since you won't be able to survive) 4. Stop charging people illegal fees (there's a parking ticket waiting for you if you couldn't find quarters for the meter, one for driving at 26mph on the road when there's no traffic, and then court fess that you pay when the city was the 1 that sent you to court in the first place)

@@neemanon Yeah it's because of shoplifting. If they got this massive store everyone is going to be shoplifting from there. News only covers these big snatch and grabs but what about people taking individual items?
I have a solution to solve this problem INDEFINITELY
1. Legalize driving without insurance (half a mile is nothing if you can drive but it's hell if you have to walk not to mention that insurance requirement prevents poorer people from driving)
2. Only those who live in an apartment complex should be able to park on that block (no sense in just anyone taking those parking spaces when people need to buy food)
3. Tax the poor less (tips up to a certain amount shouldn't be taxes as well as your first few dollars that you need to survive.... if the poverty line is $10k and you only make $10k it makes no sense to tax you on that since you won't be able to survive)
4. Stop charging people illegal fees (there's a parking ticket waiting for you if you couldn't find quarters for the meter, one for driving at 26mph on the road when there's no traffic, and then court fess that you pay when the city was the 1 that sent you to court in the first place)
