It’s crazy because I have been to the memorial and it is truly amazing and a very sobering experience. It was a rush of emotion like somber and emotional but it was also beautiful and breathtaking. You go to Katz’s for the salami but my only complaint is the sandwiches are 99% salami and 1% bread. It took a while before we were able to get out but watching what was going on around you was absolutely fantastic. It’s a gem of a place if you want a delicious meat sandwich. This is the way I remember bagels being made in Brooklyn, NY and South Beach in Miami.
    A few years ago I had two customers who started bagel factories in Charlotte. One man made his bagels this way with the kettle-ing.
    The other was run by a family with a chemical engineer father. The bagels were put into steam cabinets instead of being boiled. Both bagels were good but they were bigger so they could be made into sandwiches. The Brooklyn and Miami bagels were crispier and had a less dough-y texture. The Miami bakery had a sign that said that if you needed a tooth pulled you could just eat one of their bagels and the tooth would come out with no need to go to the dentist.
    I put more stock in the Brooklyn and Miami bakeries for authenticity because everyone there had a tattoo from a concentration camp.
    I'm not crazy about the modern bagels I guess because I remember what an old fashion bagel was like.
    The steamer type bagel company had a contract to make bagels for Sara Lee. In my opinion that was their undoing. They went out of business shortly after they started mass producing bagels. The bagels were all rolled by machine. Prior they'd had a small restaurant and retail counter for bagels and various types of cream cheese flavors and lox. (smoked salmon)
    The Brooklyn bagel bakery also made soft pretzels. In the 1950s and early 1960s I would buy 25 bagels for 2 cents each and cell them for 5 cents. The only plant you needed was a peach basket and two towels to keep the heat in. If you had a rolling shopping cart you didn't have to carry the basket all day. I sold them nearly every day during the warm months but only on Saturday during the cold ones. What didn't sell I took home and we ate them as bread with dinner.

      They're "worried" about invasive bugs and plants coming through when you get shit shipped from other countries with bugs to our grocery stores constantly for our convenience, but that's ok because they get money. You can go to Lowe's and Home Depot to buy invasive plants that kill our local natural plants because you find them "pretty", but apparently that's ok too because it's a big business doing it.
      When you go to Chinatown or other places around NY you can buy off-brand/counterfeit things all the time, but they seize it when it comes through customs? I agree, I think it should be fine to buy those. It's all about money to these BS companies. Not to mention I bought an exact souvenir from Chinatown for $5 compared to the gift shop for $25. It. Was. The. Same. Item. No better, no worse. Both made in China, in the same box etc.
      And the whole "it's all taken to a TOP SECRET location" also irritates the hell out of me. That just screams that it's being resold/taken for themselves to line their pocket. 😂

    Strange idea of what might help the 9/11 Memorial. Post it notes... Think about it, while it does encourage the writing of things upon it, it encourages the writing on a supplied material that can be removed easily. It becomes less likely to actually mar or mark the memorial from that point.

    • @TheAureliac
      @TheAureliac 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Post-it notes everywhere would look (and be) trashy. Plus, the adhesive would have them sticking to the high walls of the fountain which would have to be cleaned as well. And the adhesive would be gunky and hard to clean. Better not to encourage everyone to junk the place up.

    Is bagel considered bakery? There's a stereotype in Europe about American bakery based on the american industrial white soft square bread. These bagels are truly work of art!

    • @pookienumnums
      @pookienumnums 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      americans consider a bakery any place that bakes items that are mostly flour based. so breads, cakes, cookies, etc. some bakeries will prepare things like sandwiches and soups as well.

    Regarding the food they take in, why are citrus and avocado the most brought in. you can buy the plants and grow it in a lot of regions in the usa. I would expect very rare fruits to get harboured

    • @pookienumnums
      @pookienumnums 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i think it boils down to the labor costs. they can pay people way less in other countries, and with the shipping etc to the states or wherever its still cheaper than if they were grown in the us or elsewhere. (they have to keep their profit margins the same, so if it costs more labor then the food will simply cost more because they pass those increases directly to the consumer)
