I Need To Sell One of these Cars But Which One? the Lexus LS400 or The Mercedes 300CE?

  • Neither of them is fully completed, both still need work but ideally one of these car has to be sold. I have however changed my mind several times on which one I should keep. The Lexus is more reliable, the Mercedes as a project I have more invested in personally.

Jack, to be honest, I think you might be looking at things the wrong way. A lot of your viewers came in through the Ferrari and most of them loved watching your videos of working on small things and failing or succeeding at them. Lately, with the Merc and the Lexus, you are talking more about selling the cars than working on them. And I do believe you are selling the work you are doing short. There could be a lot more videos in both these cars, because there are lots of things that other owners are confronted with. The Lexus leather repair would be a great video, as would the interior swap would be. It would be a shame to see the cars go away without being finished. Monetary value on your exact work is not exactly what your channel was built on, so I think that might be something to keep in mind. People just love to watch you get things done. 😉

The Merc is such a massive transformation and you’re on the way to a really nice car so I’d keep that footnote as a W201 owner I might be biased 😉, you’re right about that badge! To be fair the fabric trim makes it more special as many had the leather option.

Hi Jack. Personally I like the Bismerc, the LS is a bit stuffy and boring, a bit of an old giffers car. The Merc has been transformed from a nasty pile to a handsome coupe, and there are still improvements to be made. But when all's said and done, they're your cars. and you should do what you think is best for you. Good luck with your decision. 👍

I’d keep the Benz, see it through, Frau Benz seems to be a great source for info and parts, and the garage that did the inspection. Maybe as a Sumo sweetener throw a few spares like the binnacle in with it, I’m sure someone will find a rusty donor and throw the interior into yours and have a decent car. Merc has way more kerb appeal and in time once finished will give you a fair chunk of change along with the satisfaction of having done the full restoration that you may not have intended but may have envisaged

Jack, I have watched your channel from the beginning. I understand you have chosen to make TH-cam a full time job. I believe you need to reappraise your approach to this venture. Your subscribers will want to witness completion, not hanging unfinished threads. Both of these cars are unfinished and the economics you call out which is stopping you bring either of these projects to a point of completion is sound. Humbly, I would suggest you embark on projects in the future that can provide your audience with a finished product. Good luck Jack.

I personally prefer the Merc. The Merc is part of the last of the Bruno Secco line and is the car you have more sweat equity in. It's also arguably the better car for a daily as it's less thirsty than the V8, or at least it should be. The Merc is also the car that would probably sell for less. So based on these why not daily it. These cars are a magical point where the Borg (electronics) have not taken the whole driving condition over.

Boring oversized Camry on the left (Lexus) or on the right, a classic, handsome W124. Solid and considered the best car in the world. Dude, this isn't even a question and there is only one car you'll miss after it's gone. The Merc is a satisfying car to work on. The build quality and one bit at a time is rewarding. They are also easy to work on. There is NOTHING classic about the Lexus. Yes it's all those things you said but if you want a fully reliable car then get a small Camry and be done. You're a car guy and you've earnt the special right to feel good about the Merc and all the things you do on it going forward. And continually working on cars and telling the stories of that adventure WILL keep us coming back to watch. It works well for Hoovie and it's already working for you. It's got to be best to keep the C124; driving a reasonably priced classic car is massively reliant on access to either used parts or cheap new spares, the Lexus sold in too few numbers to have the availability of either, the Merc is more likely to increase in value too.

You keep the car what makes you feel special and puts the bigger smile on your face when you driving it.
For me, it would be the Mercedes - it's older and the value for this cars only goes into one direction.
It's a pillar-less coupe and it aged quite well.
You give it 80s style BBS rims, maybe period correct lowering springs - you will have a cool cruiser what shouldn't break the bank.
The Lexus is a big boat - yes, it is probably the better car, but it is just a massive cruiser and it lacks character.
The Lexus, from a technical perspective beats most S-Class, but to give it character you actually have to make it 'worse' - believe me that, I own an XE20 and the car only became a head turner after I lowered it, changed the stance and gave it a custom stainless steel backbox to give it a humble-rumble - also running on 18" BBS RS
Before that, every box standard 318i seemed to get more street-cred.

From experience, you may probably want one car that you can mostly rely upon to get you around. I think the Merc actually can probably do that job. It's not the most mechanically complicated thing on earth and yes it may run a bit lumpy and have some odd idling issues but it reminds me a little of a Jeep that I run (with a Merc engine), it'll just plop along like that forever, and it's a classic that will probably appreciate some decent miles put on it. I like the Lexus. I had a GS300 Sport many moons ago but it is a bit of a Japanese Watch. Lacks a little soul. BisMerc has to be the answer, it'll become less temperamental with miles.

I have a plan, sell the Merc, Lexus and Sprite. You don't use the Sprite and the other two have realistically reached their usefulness as TH-cam projects. As you say you don't want to spend any money on either and you have proved the point that you can get a nice older luxury car for sensible money..
Buy a nice interesting car like a Fulvia for instance and use the space/time/money to make it really nice. It would make a much better longer term project for TH-cam and you get a nice car at the end.
As a side project get a cheap daily driver, this will provide good content and endless amusement for us as it will constantly breakdown😁😁😁.

Sell the Lexus, keep the Mercedes and carry on with it Jack.

Hi Jack, I feel I have to speak up on behalf on the 'Bismerc'. please keep your Mercedes. Its a beautiful car and what a transformation! Such a timeless classy car that will always be stylish and timless. Work on it over time and the time you invest will be rewarded for years to come.. It's one of those cars that people will always love and admire.
The Lexus hasn't aged well at all it's just horrible and beige I think it's more like a reliable appliance than a desirable car.
    There.. I've said my piece!!

It really comes down to what do you need from your car at this point. If you need a daily driver, keep the Lexus. If you have other options then keep the merc. Sometimes we have to let go of a car because it’s just not the right time to have it-if selling the merc can help fund other, cooler projects down the line then it’s the right thing to sell

Hi Jack I sell the Lexus and keep the Merc and continue to do work on it and we can follow it to a finished job they care a rare enough Merc so it be nice seeing it out

As you said yourself , Jack, you’ve already done so much with the Merc but haven’t had time to enjoy the work you’ve done. It’s a shame not to be able to see both projects through but the Lexus was part of a series, the Merc was something that you wanted. My advice, keep the Merc!

I could be way off here, but showing a potential buyer the huge transformation and work thats gone into the Bismerc, might help the sales price go up nicely???

Keep the Bismerck for the time being, the LS is an old man’s car. This model Merc is increasing in value and given what you have done to transform it really has made it shine. Oh and yes install the leather interior, it’s worth doing and will further increase the car’s value.

If you want a daily, keep the Lexus. Values are climbing now too. Rust-free is a big plus.

I wouldn't want to say which one I think you should keep, but there is one that you defo seem to have more affection for. When you talk about the lexus, you say complimentary things, but there doesn't seem to be any love for it. You are just talking about a mode of transport. Where as when you talk about the merc, you seem to have a real affection for it, despite its quirks and foibles. If I was to take both sets of keys and only give one back, I think I know which would one would make you smile to have back in your hand.

    Hi Jack,
    I've just come across this video and you've probably made your decision by now, but just my 2 cents (or pence) on it;
There two cars were in two different market sectors and price brackets. The LS400 was a competitor for the Mercedes S-Class and and was in a higher price bracket than the 300CE, which would of course be reflected in its running costs.
If your pockets are deep enough my advice would be to keep the Lexus, otherwise, keep the Merc. Both are very good cars and it's an enviable choice to be able to make.

I love the Merc….BUT…that 6 bolt V8 in the Lexus is a bombproof sweetheart that begs to be turbo or supercharged - ultimate wolf in sheeps clothing

Keep the Merc...you will always be proud of what you did, an that's worth more than what Lexus comfort and reliability could give back....also much more Benz fanatics to watch videos of you tinkering whit it

Both cars are luxury saloons. Luxury saloons are all about refined, quiet, comfortable driving so pick the one that does this best.

Well i agree - continue tinkering with Bismerc, utilise it as a 'daily' & dont put any more $$$ into 'Sumo' & given its got an excellent body & runs well 'yes' sell 'him' & be on the lookout for the next 'project'

If you sell the Lexus, it’s engine may end up in something else. However, keeping the Merc, fitting the leather and getting it setup on a rolling road would give you a lovely set of wheels.
    …but then, Lancia Fulvia!!

You've put your heart and soul into the Merc, you've come a long way together...why not enjoy it ? It's way classier than the Ls400...

Sell them both. The Merc is fine now and maybe the Lexus better to live with. I really think as project cars neither one is much more interesting than the other. I think your channel grew with the 308 (I am with you since the Evora which I really love), because it was special and not that easy to fix. Also the Frankenlise was a heck of a project... and so special (I expected tons of content and I feel like there could have been much more than I was able to see...???).
So this is it... I started watching your channel (like every vid you launched) with the Evora, I loved/ love the 308 and was curious about the Frankenlise and I think this is what you should continue with. Interesting cars which are a challenge. But this is just me. And I have also seen the episode with the little house (was it in italy?) with great pleasure, even if this had absolutely nothing to do with wheels and horsepower :-)
Keep on going, "crazy Brit" ;-)

Take the instrument cluster out of Sumo, get in Bismerc and drive to refurbish shop to fix it, it won't even cost £100 (including fuel) and you'll get a warranty. Job done. Sell both, buy a Z.

  • @Eastbarn1
    @Eastbarn1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Can you get an MOT on the Lexus if the warning lights don’t illuminate? Whether you sell it or keep it replace that cluster - it’s the first thing that you or a potential buyer sees so a good move for me.

You almost seem to have come to your decision at the end of your video Jack…but if you were still undecided, reading through the comments should, I hope, swing it. There is such a lot of love for that old Benz, and as pretty much everyone else has said, you’ve made a big emotional investment in the car. It would be great to see the continuing transformation from basket case back to distinguished old lady. I think you’re wise to leave the interior ‘as is’ - leather is a bit passé on these, and the cloth makes for a refreshing alternative. I’ve also heard it said that once you start dismantling the interior trim, it’s virtually impossible to get it squeak and rattle free once it’s refitted. Keep the Bismerc…you’ve come too far to abandon it now!
