I grew up in Troy. Great city with great schools. When I went to my university, I found out that because I went to Troy schools my GPA was adjusted higher (admission secret: colleges rank the schools district/system you come from, and adjust the GPA accordingly to reflect the quality of your education). Public transportation isn't great especially Coolidge and the western part, but a very clean city. Go Colts!
Troy is the best place to live in Michigan for many reasons. It’s centrally located and has major headquarters and freeways and 2 major universities, one located 10 minutes away and one university 25 away from the heart of Troy yet the city full of trees because their mayor and city council cares to keep the city beautiful as it has always been since the 1970’s when the city started to be built.
Also, I don’t care what any website says about how good Troy schools are. They are overpopulated there are way too many kids in my opinion and I am a kid.
How many months is there significant amts of either snow or ice? Cold weather is not a concern, but snow is. Be as detailed as youd'd like. I am coming from the southern region.
I am still contemplating of moving to either Troy or Brighton to be closer to my family coming from California. I retired in 2021 & I find San Francisco Bay Area to be too expensive now & crimes are unabated. We have constant fires & drought every summer. While researching between these 2 towns, I find Brighton having a higher property tax base than Troy. I supposed Troy has more businesses to support a city tax than Brighton.
Hi Alain! It just comes down to what you’re looking for in a city. Troy and Brighton are two very different cities to say the least. Troy is a massive business hub, where Brighton is a smaller town. What’s important to you?
Interesting. I grew up in Rochester Hills and now live in Walnut Creek CA. I’d say it’s a very similar lifestyle with great schools and lots of outdoor opportunities. And we don’t have much crime, but with that said I think Michigan is a great place to retire (if you don’t mind the snow!)
Troy used to be nicer than it is now. The population is totally aged. Economic Development is struggling, signs of blight along Rochester Road have been prominent for a while now. They have a glut of vacant office space and development is mostly focused along the stretch of Big Beaver Road. Unfortunately, it all looks like a bunch of strip malls. Undeveloped land maxed out decades ago, so older business and housing stock is now most prevalent. Average resident age is now probably about 60. Which means most houses are probably going to date back to the ‘70s and ‘80s. Most likely, if you buy a new house, you’re going to have to refurbish unless you get lucky and get a flipped house.

That's great you had a good experience Dani! I have heard similar situations with Brighton area schools (Where I grew up).
