Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

NBC just recently expanded their broadcast reach. I live in central Minnesota and I used to be unable to get channel 11. Half the people could get it where I live and the other half couldn't. Anyway as soon as they expanded the reach it's been coming in perfectly. I'm so excited for you shane.

Congrats Shane! LA native here 😊 I would recommend spending some time in Santa Monica. Milo and Olive is a fantastic trendy Italian restaurant on the west side! Lemonade is another great California spot, it’s a cafeteria style restaurant with lots of good salads ect (the truffle Mac and cheese is to die for)! There are several around the city. And of course salt and straw is an insanely popular ice cream stop out here. They have some trendy flavors. The Griffith observatory is a great place to visit at sunset with great views of the city.

I've seen the trailer on ordinary Joe and it looks like it will be one of those profound drama series that all of us wish we could do. Look into the future to see which path we should have taken. I’m not an actor and have no aspirations to be in film or television, however as someone who lives with a disability I would love to see more actors with different abilities in the entertainment industry maybe you can advocate for that When you’re there lol

LA Stuffs: If you wan to visit Santa Monica, the pier is pretty accessible for the beach. 2nd St Promenade is wheelchair accessible and close to Santa Monica Pier. There's a delicious place called the Misfit just off the Promenade. Or, if Shane wants another pub, the Ye Old Kings Head is also between the Promenade and Santa Monica Pier. (Stay away from Venice Beach for now.) The Getty Museum is beautiful. La Brea Tar Pits is fun to look at and there are these cool light posts art installations right next to it called Urban Light. Also, this is right next to The Grove (where Umami Burger and the best Creperie in the Original Farmers Market section, you've ever had in your life!) . Downtown there is a place called The Edison. Its an underground electric utility company turned into a dining and music venue. It's one of the coolest places I've ever seen. It has all sorts of nerdy Tesla Coils and stuff in it as decoration. Feels like you're stepping back in time. Elevator and wide spaces between tables to maneuver. Oh man, now I miss all my LA haunts. Oh and if you want a delicious breakfast, The Griddle on Sunset is amazing. Unsure if they are accessible cause its' an old location though. Cafe 101 or Urth Cafe has a gorgeous patio near the Pacific Design Center- also a cool looking building and made totally accessible.

@@kenzierocks1240 I was always happy to host friends visiting! It's nice to show people the off the beaten path stuff and the popular stuff on off hours when it's not too overwhelming. I used to play roller derby for Angel City roller Derby and we'd have skaters from all over the world to whom we played hosts! Great adventures! and always able to cater to people who wanted to go full on and others who were more reserved in their senses of adventure!

Having been to LA several times my best recommendation would be to do what you have to do and then quickly go literally anywhere else in the country. Being home bodies who don't like large crowds, I don't think you're going to like it. Everything is expensive, the city is ridiculously dirty, a lot of the buildings are in terrible shape, there is graffiti everywhere, there are too many people, traffic is an absolute nightmare, it's just awful. I have been all over the US and LA is the absolute worst.
As someone who used to live in LA, you have to find the quiet places. that's what we locals do! I guess you aren't working for the tourism board any time soon! hahah
My son has been there once, he said basically the same thing. He was not impressed.

@@schacher4 well, I guess take it from teh authority of someone who has been to LA ONCE, instead of someone lived there and offered PLENTY of places for them to go that would align with their interests. It's not like I haven't been following them or find some kind of relatability to them where I wouldn't consider THEIR preferences or something. How myopic and narrow minded of so many of you to think that people who aren't like you might actually enjoy a trip in which THEY could dictate the terms of their own adventures.
