  • On a follow up to a question I had about using ranger bands to make a slingshot, I use a bicycle intertube to attempt to craft a slingshot. I did not have high hopes when I started but check out the performance.

    Rather than putting a thumbs down I see your a good guy and would probably like feedback.
    Innertube slingshots definitely have their place but probably not for you.
    I wanted to look to see how you make them and tie them all up because I wanted an activity for my cub scout/ scouts 11 year olds that they do themselves with a pocket knife and a rummage through the shed. These kids don't have access to surgical tubing.
    I wanted a video that showed how to cut them and string them up but this video wasn't it and all it did was say how stupid inner tube bands are. No problem but I will go elsewhere for this knowledge

      Thanks for leaving a comment. If the intertube bands worked better I probably would have gone into it more. I agree for kids to improvise bands is probably the best use for them. Rubber Bands would be my first choice. I tied the pouch and attached the bands to the frame exactly like I do my flat bands. I cut the tubes with a knife but a roller cutter would have worked better. All of this info is in my slingshot playlist. Slingshots: th-cam.com/play/PL8mglC-fQMqsrf79cyJvGJ0h_JjXa7FJj.html

      we used to do this all the time years ago. i actually just made another slingshot using one today. the trick it to either use thin strips of bands to fasten them, or dental floss in a pinch. it depends on there you want to tie (the fork or the pouch). always use the Over-The-Top method with a inner "V" shape of the two bands.
      they are of course slower then special made rubber, but its very good for heavy big things like rocks.

    That is why we used RED Michelin bicycle inner tube. it was faster and thicker, not as dead as the black inner tube.

    to be honest the inner tubing is already old and not stretch but i can throw large rocks from it

    When I started shooting slingshots I first started using inner tubes as slingshot bands it worked pretty well and I didn't really need them to be all that long I was able to shoot a marble through a pop can and it came out the other side that only happened every so often though I think I also accidentally killed a rat with one the lengths that I would cut them at was somewhere around 10 inches

    Exacto Knife for the innertube. You can also use clamps to secure it to a board or cutting table!

    I actually used those to make many slingshots, I tend to make the bands as wide as my thumb and you can actually rip the seam by hand after the initial cut which gives very smooth edges. To increase power make the bands a little shorter, this reduces durability faster, but increases power when stretched more. Also try pre stretching the tube for a bit. After doing this the band will stretch much farther and be more powerful

      @@Jaybird196 Grab each end in your hands and stretch it then release the tension after a moment then stretch it again. Move your hands closer and closer to the center slowly to make sure the whole band is stretched. Keep doing this until it's as stretchy as you need.

    it might be cool to make a survival weapons video just in the off chance some kid is struggling out there like materials people can salvage from. Bike tubing might also be better cut into thinner strips to add to the stretch of the band you would be sacrificing durability but with how much tubing you get from just 1 tube it might be the best option for squeezing as much power as you can out of it.

      I can think of two, but they aren't that great. You may be able to use them for fishing and you can also use heat and almost any type of plastic to make any other shape of plastic (or patch broken plastic). Homemade "soldering iron" + "plastic welding" techniques = make/patch almost anything with plastic.

      @@Jaybird196 glad to help. Thought of two more: 1) slingshot ammo 2) can use, even if 1-2/3-4 holes are broken, with cordage for making drawstrings such as for small pouches you can make with any fabric or even to link straps made with such cordage or fabric for quick release. Why are you asking about buttons? Thinking of adding them to a kit or pack or just curious about salvaging some old ones?

    • @Jaybird196
      @Jaybird196 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dancoles2235 Well, for me, I just like things to be as multifunctional as possible :) . Buttons are, typically, part of a sewing/ repair kit, but if they can do more than one thing, that'd be great. I can only carry so much stuff, in a survival kit, so if an object can do a lot, it's more valuable (so long, as it isn't too redundant or too destructible). Beyond that, general knowledge is good.

    • @dancoles2235
      @dancoles2235 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jaybird196 makes sense. I'm not an expert, but if I were advising a novice, I'd suggest finding something else more useful that can be turned in to buttons instead... that is, assuming everything else important is covered enough to make the slight weight adjustment worthwhile if for a mobile pack. Thanks for the feedback.

    I used to have a whole box of 107 large rubber bands as a kid. I used to cut 1 rubber band into 2 pieces and used an old lanyard as a pouch. With marbles I could kill a rabbit at 15 yards and under.

    Good video. Thanks for the insightful information brother. I came to this because in considering the other survival uses for bicycle inner tube (fire starting and securing gear) for minimalist packing, it'd be nice to have an additional purpose for the tubing in making powerful slingshot, but understand it is not ideal. Disappointing.

    You're using Butyl tube which isnt stretchy and made to resist puncture. Try latex or perhaps TPU. We used to get a lot of stretchy inner tubes on old bikes we got from the trash 25 years ago I doubt there's hardly any now.

    you would stand a better chance by making the bands as thin as possible and then longer. since it isn’t that great you would have to build a long pull slingshot. the amount of pressure on your draw means nothing, you are looking for speed. latex is the best material and a large part of the extended bands when you’re shooting doesn’t retract fast enough to add speed and that’s why bands are tapered it’s to get excess rubber out of the way. one of the principles I learned from my atlatle is that doubling the length of my throwing arm, not my strength, doubled the distance I can throw an arrow. Another thing is the longer you hold the draw the weaker the shot will be because your bands will cool down. I bet if I built the damn thing I could kill some kind of animal with it for survival but I would have to be up close maybe shooting darts but with a six ft pull tapered bands and a quick release.
