Love this song! Cat Stevens is a great singer songwriter with a very unique sounding voice. One of my first albums I ever bought was "Tea For The Tillerman". The whole album is great. So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat" which has "Morning Has Broken". He has had so many great songs in his career such as Matthew & Son", "The First Cut Is The Deepest" "Father & Son", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.
So many great storytellers were popular in the 1970s: Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Carole King, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Jim Croce, Melanie, Gordon Lightfoot, Bonnie Raitt, Don McClean, Billy Joel, John Prine...we were spoiled! "Morning Has Broken" was one of the few Cat Stevens hits that he did not write himself. The words were written by British author Eleanor Farjeon and set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune. The hymn appears in many Christian hymnals. But Stevens brought new life to the song.
His voice is just perfect, beautiful and over the piano arrangement by Rick Wakeman, perfect song and arrangement Cat, Yusef Stevens is in his mid 70's now and played Glastonbury this year and he was amazed by the crowds that came to see "this old man" He still has that voice spirit and love and his Glasto show was the highlight for many
I lived in Jakarta for 10 years, capital of Indonesia: the world’s most populous Muslim country. Cat Stevens long ago converted. At 6am or so every day, the first call to prayers booms across the city. One day I heard this on a blue sky morning. I still wonder if it was him. Magic ❤❤
So sorry for being late to this party! What a wonderful, thoughtful, and well-described reaction. Comparing the storytelling aspect of Cat/Yusef to storytelling rappers of the 90’s was so insightful for an old rock dude who grew up in the 70’s & 80’s. Easy sub here, really well done!
I agree that John Denver was so good at telling a story with his music. May I, as a subscriber, also suggest David Phelps? I think you'd enjoy He's Alive (Peter's betrayal of Jesus), Song for Sinners (the rich, the children who are never known, or anybody), and Hello Beautiful (Alzheimer). Thank you for a great reaction to this beautiful song.
....it may seem like it's the singer who is painting a picture with the words thru his voice, but it's really the songwriter who created that picture thru his or her lyrics and melody. Remember that the singer may or may NOT be the songwriter. With this particular song Cat Stevens did write the lyrics and melody but there is such a thing as professional songwriters...... 😇
He is fantastic!❤❤❤❤❤

He did many great songs! Try Don't Be Shy (album version, it's from the soundtrack of the movie Harold And Maude. He wrote all the music for it btw!)
