Notice how whenever Steve interrupts him while hes telling his story he just ignores the question and keeps on talking. That how you know that a story is rehearsed. He doesn't want to get distracted and forget his lines.
Yup...my mom always told us "If you always tell the truth, you don't have to worry about remembering your story". . The other things I noticed was that you could tell by the inflection in his voice that he was lying, hoping that Steve would join his outrage over being 'railroaded', and that would give him a breather so he could focus on keeping his story straight. The other thing I noticed was him consciously, obviously, adding to his initial story to make it more believable, at least to his own ears.
