    It’s exciting and weird and sometimes a little sad when things change! Have you had any big changes in your tarot life?

    Your mother must be so damned proud if you. You are intelligent and articulate. You show compassion and empathy. Everything you say is well thought out. I can also tell that you have a tender heart. You are going to be a force to be reckoned with as you get older.

    Katey it's silly to me that you even have to say, "please don't think I was lying" because it's all what this life journey is about...growing and expanding...and doing something today that was not even in our realm of site yesterday...not being stagnant. Just like we love that one toy when we're young & can't imagine not having it, just because you're not still carrying it around 20 yrs later, doesn't mean you really didn't like it like you thought you did lol! It's wonderful and inspiring to watch you not be afraid to reach for something that you never thought you would reach for ❤

      Thank you, and I totally agree! Unfortunately, not everyone does, though. But I like that analogy of our favourite toys.. took me right back to the doll I carried around everywhere for five years straight! 😅❤️

      @@KateyFlowers I saw the Next World Tarot on another reader's video, and, bangshangalang!
      I had to have it.
      Fortunately, I found an online store that had it for a reasonable price, and, free shipping. It arrives in a few days.

    Really enjoyed hearing about your shifts in what resonates with you now. When our tastes shift it can be exciting but also sad. But ultimately it’s the fascinating process of the human heart and mind mixed with the magic of tarot. “It’s not you it’s me” so true. But we change and grow and that is natural. It has nothing to do with lying. I can safely say I consider your honesty a hallmark of your YT persona. 💚

      Thank you for that, that’s very kind of you to say. ☺️ And you’re right, it is totally fascinating! Times like these really remind me how complex, fluid and dynamic we are as human beings! X

    You don't have to defend yourself dear, i totally get you. I have switched several times in taste and still do, for me life itself changes and moves all the time and so the taste of decks! Enjoy and embrace your changes :) Great video, thank you for sharing 💜

      I appreciate that 😊 Although I wouldn’t say I’m defending myself, more just responding to the concerns and confusion I’m regularly met with when I sell or trade almost any deck, let alone one I’ve raved on about in the past! I definitely am leaning into embracing this shift more now, and it is very exciting! 😊

    I think we go through phases and then sometimes go back to decks that we were not connecting with previously.
    I seem to remember you traded some decks a while back and then missed some of them.
    I’ve decided not to trade decks when I feel this way. I don’t trade until all 4 seasons pass again, until I’m in different place emotionally, and then I pull them out and see if I still don’t connect. I think it’s part of cycles we go through just like anything in life. ❤️🌺🦋🌷🌻

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re so right about cycles! There have been a small number of decks I’ve missed, but it’s certainly in the minority... but it definitely does happen. I like the system of cycling through all four seasons before making a decision, sounds almost poetic ☺️

    Katey, I think it's marvelous how honest you are about your evolving Tarot practice. I believe that our practices both affect and reflect our internal lives, the changes we go through in our hearts and minds and souls. Me, I feel like ever since I got on this spiritual path, I'm ALWAYS going through some sort of evolution! I've found that, and this is some of my DBT/AA coming out here, acceptance is the answer. When I can accept that I am in a constant state of flux, and that's okay; that I am ALWAYS evolving my mind (not changing it but evolving it!) and that's okay; and that the only constant is change, THEN I can be centered and settled in my core - a core that is not solid, but liquid, ever shifting. And that's okay.
    I may have to make a video response, if that's cool with you, because you raised so many good points, and because this message is getting way too long. :)

    Love the new intro in your most recent videos. Changing taste in tarot has something that has happened within the last year and continuing into this year. I released a lot of decks that just didn't fit my tastes anymore. There were decks that I only got for the sake of hype and ended up either really enjoying and it becoming a favourite or becoming sorely disappointed. Now, if I cannot get on with a deck, even if I love the artwork then I have to pass it on because I need to be able to read with my decks and not just have it collect dust on the shelf or put away somewhere. It is interesting to see what decks we love not that we wouldn't have previously. Great topic Katey!

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am very similar in that I want decks around me that I love to read with, rather than pretty things on my shelf that are collector items. And interesting to hear you’ve been having a similar experience of change this past year, too. And thank you! You’re very kind :D xx

  • @tarotmap

    To me it's a huge part of life in general. I experience the change in tarot taste all the time :) Some decks I keep because I come back to them, some I let go and never look back :) I learned over the years to recognise which decks will never "return" as "my" decks and Im usually pretty right about it these days. Still can go off on a tangent though ;) lol

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve definitely gotten good at knowing which decks aren’t for me, but accepting that a favourite of mine is no longer for me is a lot harder emotionally! :P

      Katey Flowers I have to say that is a Schiffer's deck and I really don't like the card stock at all. I resist buying it for a long time but it is really fun. it works with people that are not comfortable with very symbolic images or maybe can't understand a 10 of swords or Death if is not literally and they get afraid of those cards no matter what I explain😅😅😅

    I had many changes! I bought very dark tarot at the beginning of my path probably I needed to work with my shadows...now even if I recently bought the tarot deck the vampire of the eternal like because I like the art work and the book by Barbara Moore, I'm feel more comfortable reading with more gentle decks for example the joie de vivre by Paulina Cassidy, the faeries tarot by Doreen Virtue, Tarot of a moon garden by by Karen Marie Sweikhardt, Stella's Tarot by Stella Kaoruko, Secret Forest Tarot by Lucia Mattioli.
    :-)
    Beautiful video! Thanks!

    I don't really like modern style decks either. I like my decks to look otherworldly to me -- fantastic, mythical. Helps me to move into the imaginal realm. The only real exception so far is the Light Seers'. It still has that otherworldly quality somehow.

    Now you're speaking my language, Katey! The Sasuraibito, Next World, Urban and my beloved Gaian I find so readable and relevant. I've never been attracted to the cutesy-style decks for some reason. Maybe because the artwork doesn't appeal to me??? Not sure. Our tastes evolve as we evolve and as the times we live in evolve. So therefore it's not surprising that our tastes in decks evolve. As with many things life, we become attracted to new and different styles of decks. Now the question becomes, what to do with the decks that used to speak to us, but no longer do? I guess you're right we need to sit with these old tried and true decks a while and decide which to hold on to and which to let go of. I am currently finding myself with way too many decks. I have a big shopping bag that's gradually filling up with decks I no longer connect to and with decks I thought I'd connect to, but after buying them found they just weren't for me. For the decks that I no longer connect to does this mean I said I liked them, but really didn't ? No, it just means, times change, I've changed, my tastes have changed, my experiences have changed. and therefore the decks that speak to me have changed. I'm thinking about your trip to Timor and how that must have changed your perspective on life and therefore, possibly changed what types of Tarot decks you're attracted to. As our life experiences grow and expand so do our tastes, I guess.
    Thank you for this thoughtful video it has given me much food for thought.... as your videos often do! I actually have three versions of the Gaian!!! For my working Gaian I use the book from the Schiffer edition and the cards from the Llewellyn. I just adore that deck!
    Happy trails my friend as you journey through the seemingly never ending choices of Tarot decks! xo Blessed Be

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow! So good to hear how much you enjoy the Gaian! And funny that you mention Timor! This change definitely started a long time before I went to Timor, but it was the day after I got back when I came into my Tarot room and just really ‘saw’ my collection with new eyes. I realised that I wasn’t just moving towards new types of decks but that I was also moving away from some old favourites. It was one of those seemingly obvious things that you can’t see until you step back for a moment, you know? Anyway, it is nice to hear you’ve been through similar cycles... and I’m definitely inspired to keep a sharp eye out for a copy of the Gaian! 😊❤️

    Very interesting share Katey. I do find I have a "type" of deck I like (that I don't really know how to describe) and I've never really had the kind of experience that you describe, most of my oldest decks are still my most beloved. I did recently have the experience of not connecting with a couple of decks that had been on my wish list for the longest time and I was sure I would love and connect with... It was so strange. Maybe I didn't tune in enough before purchasing? Not sure. Thanks for this video Katey, much love

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had a number of those sort of experiences where a deck that has been on my wish list forever just doesn’t ‘click’ when it arrives, and then other decks I wasn’t sure about end up connecting with me and providing great readings (like the Sasuraibito)! I personally think it’s hard to know how I’ll get along with a deck until I actually get my hands on it.

    Of course my go-to deck is Rider Waite. However, the facial expressions seem bland to me. The reason for that is, that people will interpret them differently depending on the reading. Change/growth is a good thing, even though we might "fall out of love" with certain things, decks, people in our life. It feels silly to me that your integrity gets questioned because of that, Katey. Maybe the quote " you don't really understand it until it happens to you" fits here too. It's your life, do whatever pleases your beautiful heart

  • @inkandflame

    Yes, my tastes have shifted a bit in the 14 months I've been reading tarot; however, I've not yet lost interest completely in my first decks, more just that I've embraced decks I wasn't previously interested in like The Wildwood Tarot and the Dame Darcy Mermaid Tarot. Recently, each one of those decks suddenly became something I really desired in order to explore an area of myself that had been dormant. Growth and expansion for both of us. :)
    I love your explanation of the bubble and how you needed that suspension of disbelief in order to read at first. Makes complete sense to me. It sounds like your intuition has grown as strong as your intellect, so you read differently. I'm gaining so much trust in tarot compared to when I started because it has been phenomenally helpful and in step with every change I've gone through. What about The Numinous Tarot? I recall you had that on order. Maybe I missed you talking about it. I love it, but since I got it for a specific purpose, I haven't focused on it much, yet. I finally got the World Spirit after first seeing it on your channel months ago, and it's now a favorite of mine. :)

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh how cool that you’ve had your own shifts, too! And yay for the World Spirit! It’s such an amazing deck and I’m so glad to hear you like it! I didn’t mention the Numinous, no, largely just because I haven’t used it at all and I’m not sure how contemporary it actually feels. It’s so pretty and although there are elements of the modern world in it, it’s also very magical. I’ve actually been wondering if it falls too much into that old style for me and perhaps that’s a reason I haven’t worked with it yet!

  • @aquamarine18
    @aquamarine18 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Enjoyed your thoughts. First of all, I must say, I really hope that no one thinks that shifts in your practice or your 'most used' decks makes you in any way dishonest. I think that would be really unfair towards you. There is nothing in your channel or your videos that in any way even hints at you being a liar, and I think folks should support each other in their journeys to finding what works for them (at any given moment) and what doesn't.
    As for my big shifts... the only huge one now is that over the past year or so, I've found myself really drawn to Marseilles style and historical reproductions. This shift is something I never anticipated -- some of the decks I love most and are top of my wishlist now, I wouldn't have even given a second glance at when I started. Other than that, no big shifts for me, but what I've found is that over time I've gotten much better at being able to tell what I'm going to like and what I'm not. For a long time I thought "computer illustrated decks are not for me." I had tried one beautiful one that's photoshopped and it really didn't work for me, so I figured, 'nope, no more of that.' Then two absolutely brilliant decks that happen to have involved some photo-manipulation, the Spirit Within Tarot and the Deviant Moon, came into my life and I realized I was completely wrong. I love them! Now, though, (sadly) I realize what it actually is that really doesn't work for me -- and it was really my problem all along -- is photo-realistic faces, which means things like collage art decks I just can't work with. Maybe that too will change over time... but not right now.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh how interesting! I don’t tend to like collage decks either, but the Textured Tarot seems to be an exception to that rule for me. Also really cool to hear about your transition into Marseille. So many of us start with RWS as almost the default, it makes sense that some of us would move into other systems, too. And really interesting how you figured out that distinction between computer based illustration and realistic faces, and what specifically doesn’t work for you.
      And yes, I have had a lot of comments questioning my honesty whenever I sell or trade a deck or just when I haven’t spoken about one in a while. Especially if my review was very positive or if someone decided to get the deck themselves based on my review. Which I can kind of understand, especially if there’s just a bit of surprise or confusion, but it can feel like I’m being put into a very small box!

    A change of taste always brings fresh excitement, doesn't it? It seems like you are having great fun using your new and different cards. :-) My taste in tarot decks has not changed in a major way yet. There is not one modern-style deck in my little collection just because I don't like the artwork in contemporary decks and compared to the RWS, for example, they all seem to be pretty one-dimensional to me (like the business man card) and therefore would narrow my view a little.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very interesting. I definitely found the business man type cards really one dimensional, too. It’s funny how when we change, so does our perspective! I’ll always love the good ol’ RWS, though! And you’re right, so very exciting! I feel like I’m on a new adventure! 😅😁

    Everyone's Tarot journey is unique to them. Last year I let go of some decks I'd once regarded as almost part of my soul - and up till then, they were. They also tended to be on the fantasy / fey side, eg. Hidden Realm, Mystic Faerie. Easy, pleasing to the eye and comfortable. Not sure yet which way I'll go when I can afford to splurge on decks again, but I have a few in mind. Tarot of the Spirit looks interesting.

    We all change Katie...….our likes and dislikes. It's the Wheel doing its thing! I do think you would like the Gaian Tarot. It's very real, with real people doing real life things. I think it's beautiful. The original by Llewellyn is now out of print, and Schiffer is making it now. I did order one by them even though I already had two sets of the original. I really don't care for the Schiffer version though. Yes, they made the cards bigger, but they did so by adding yet another border on the cards. Not a fan of that at all. I did just recently order one of her original, limited edition versions so I'm anxiously awaiting those! If you're not sure about the deck, you may want to get the app first so you can check out all the cards first :) you might be able to find one of the Llewellyn sets on Etsy or in a swap group. Another very real and quite new deck you should check out is the Everyday Enchantment Tarot by Poppy Palin...…...beautiful, rich colors and artwork with real folks doing real things. I love it. All the best to you as you explore your new taste in decks!

    Great topic! I think if we read different books at different times of our lives, why not tarot? We need and can receive only certain messages at different times of our lives. I know I am a really newbie to tarot, less than a year, and using more fantasy-ish decks.

      I love this comparison between how we read books and tarot! Perfect analogy! Thank you! And interesting to hear how your own journey is starting with more fantasy decks. Is that an art style or genre your particularly drawn to outside of tarot?

      Fantasy is a genre I love in movies and books, though it is not my preferred art style, interestingly. Hmm. My preferred art style, in other words, the artwork I admired has been surrealism, mostly.

      but maybe fantasy art and surrealistic art are closely related/

    It saddens me that you get flak for this. To me, it shows that you are growing and evolving, always learning, always keeping your mind open. These are *really* good things! HOW do people not get that?? [insert swear words here]
    I have grown *into* decks I never ever expected to like, most notably the Deviant Moon and the Medieval Scapini, both of which I once found creepy but now find witty and deep. I can't honestly claim to have grown out of any decks, but that may be because I'm still a totally immature child on the inside! 😜😂 But seriously, so far I have found my tastes in tarot to be expanding rather than shifting. That may change, though; who knows? 💖

      🤣 haha immature child! That made me laugh! So interesting to hear about the Deviant Moon, that’s actually been brought up a couple of times in the comments as a deck people have grown into, as you say. And I agree! It does feel like a good thing to be open to change, but I suppose because the camera isn’t always on, they don’t see the transition so perhaps it seems a bit jarring from their end, like a backflip rather than a process? That’s all I can put it down to. 🤷‍♀️

    I've noticed The Hate U Give on your bookshelf. With the movie coming out, have you thought about doing a book review?

      I haven’t actually read it yet! My to be read pile is always getting bigger and bigger!

    Katey - Yes, my tastes have been changing in the past 6 months... decks that I saw earlier this year that didn't appeal to me, are now some of my new faves. Ex: I'm usually a fan of subtle coloring, such as the rich tones in the Pamela Colman Smith RWS deck (the version Simon describes as having "rich-tones," not the new/changed version Lo Scarabeo came out with under the same name). But after seeing the Albano Waite deck in one of Owlcat75's videos, I was Really drawn to it! I'm trying to curb my spending, but I eventually bought it, and am in LOVE with the combination of vibrant colors! I love shuffling it face-up so I can see all the colors combining together as the cards come together. :) Same thing with styles/themes of decks. I used to be more of a romantic/art deco/Llewellyn deck-style lover, but am becoming more attracted to different styles & themes. I see these changes as just a part of life & growth. Really enjoyed your video; thanks for honestly sharing your changing viewpoint!
